Xbox 360 Rrod Fix?

I bought my 360 ages ago second hand off some guy - so no warranty.

It's got RROD once before and I fixed it and it worked well for a while...

but

a few weeks ago it crashed and got the RROD again :P

so does anyone know of a good online tutorial of how to fix it?

Keen to do it myself and get it done asap so I can play it while I'm on uni holidays and get a few new games (red dead redemption, madden 11? anything else new??)

"Australian Parts

Store: Bunnings Warehouse (Store Locater)

2 x Dan's Premium C/S MT Screws & Nuts Size 3/16x1/2 (Qty: 5 per packet)

2 x Zenith Flat Washers 3/16 (Qty: 25 per packet)

I used 3 washers on the bottom of the motherboard, and 2 on the top.

I cleaned the CPU, GPU and heatsinks with Arcticlean, and re-applied with Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Premium Compound.

Australian's can buy those thermal products from here.

I have fixed my 2 360's with this fix with success as well as using this fix on friends 360's as well. Its really not hard at all, its actually quite easy for anyone who can use a screw driver, watch a tutorial and above all be patient. Try not to get pissed off when you are trying to get the damn thing open because its really easy to break something.

Worst case scenario is it doesnt work, but to be honest I think you will get it working again.

To be honest I wouldnt bother, I have heard many a horror story of those coolers causing fires and frying 360's from power surges. The actual RROD is caused not by overheating but by the lack of pressure from the heat sinks onto the GPU and CPU so the heat cant be transferred from them to the heat sinks.

Franga, I've done that on one of my Xboxes, they end up failing again after a while. Got 3 more months out of my 2007 one.

I think that once the solder joints are f**ked, there's no permanent fix.

Probably, I fixed my 360 from late 07 just recently and *touch wood* its still going strong. I think it just depends on the mood of who ever put it together and the parts at the time. My 07 360 works fine and feels reasonable well put together, but my late 09 Xbox is made with a tin opener and has E74'd itself to death. My girlfriends brothers 05 Xbox worked with the fix for about a year before the DVD drive died and he sold it. So I think it just depends on the exact reason thats beind the E74 or RROD.

I wouldnt hold my breath on the 360 slim being any more reliable than the current one. Its all the same stuff except stuffed into a smaller package which is bound to cause problems. When the PS2 slim came out it was the biggest POS with them dying left right and centre. The PS3 slim seems to be the exception to the rule, I got one about 5 months ago and its been going great.

Also considering the OP wants to flash his drive to play backup's I would say the jury is still out as to whether the 360 slim can be flashed or not.

To those of you who have flashed 360's be forewarned I got banned a while back and the bastards at Microsoft not only banned me from live but they took away my ability to install games to the HDD and when you try and put your HDD onto another 360 it corrupts all your save games. (there is a way to uncorrupt your save game but there is no automated process you have to manually uncorrupt them, in my case over a thousand files)

I dont give a shit about being banned from Live, PSN is a much better service in terms of lag for me anyway but dont f**k up my console, I bought it, the features are mine not yours to f**k up whenever you feel like it.

A mate of mine i think is one of the only people who has a reasonble success rate of repairing the issue...

I was talking to him about stuff and he said the amount of xbox's that come from people who've attempted to fix it themselves is rather high hehehe :)

I'll try drag some more details about the success/failure rate of the repairs.

He's even got people sending him xbox's from interstate to get fixed now :D

Ash, with the exception of resoldering the entire motherboard, I can't think of any way that your mate does it which would make it more effective than these home fixes.

BTW for me, GTA 4 was the straw that ended up breaking it again LOL. The newer 360's have smaller processor dies, and slightly improved cooling, as well as more effective methods of keeping the chips attached to the board.

I used the nylon + metal washer method on mine, and fiddled around with varying amounts of pressure, washers etc etc

The newest itineration of the Xbox has signifigantly improved cooling and even more efficient power usage, but even the latest update before that is pretty much free of the RROD problems.

i havent read it all but i have a 100% success rate on consoles that havent been attempted to repair before hand, and 94% with console that have been tampered with... this new machine coming next week will make reballing easy so i replace the weak solder with leaded strong stuff that will NEVER fail

The fix is nowhere near as expsensive as a new one. It's his business, so makes sense to invest in it as well don't forget (even if it is a side business)

And considering he has 100% strike rate for untouched, i reckon that's not a bad hitrate :P

Not here to promote his business, just get some info out there about the fixing rates as i know he's always cursing about people trying it "DIY", stuffing it up and then it just makes it worse :D

      I had a look at the FAB9 EFR kit, around $8500 AU before delivery, so add in shipping, installation, consumables and tuning, I believe the price difference would be negligible  And whilst I am paying top dollar at MX5 Mania, if I have any issues with the kit they are local for support,  and from my experience, will happily go out of their way to help, hell, I've purchased parts from them and asked "how do I install or remove parts" and they have fitted a few of them for free, this means more to me than saving a few thousand dollars And yes, 99% of the time I just plod around in the car, that may change once I start hearing turbo whooshy noises, but, as I have 3 family members is the constabulary, even when I'm up it, it is only up to the speed limit, or occasionally, but rarely, overtaking on the Hwy (I just plod in the left lane typically and enjoy the drive) Plus the kids would never let it go if I got booked speeding, Jackie is constantly getting critiqued by the kids about her driving, which I think is hilarious, and tell them that she is "bringing shame to our family", so heaven forbid if I ever got done speeding, after all my mouthing off about her driving, I would never live it down, and it would be another thing she would bring up any chance she got Like the time I got drunk about 15 years ago and fell out of a cab, which gets brought up at least a few times every year since it happened Good times

      True, might get it looked at. Found out you can in fact flatten the 12v battery relatively easily too the other day (kids lefts the hazards on) so meaning to get that checked in the new year. What's odd is it'll blow cold from both vents if you have the ac down as low as poss (18), but anything else the passenger one blows warmish. Also has been summer since I got it obvs but noticed it didn't seem to want to blow hot last night when we had a cold snap.

      You ask for things. You specifically state you want responsiveness. A link was provided for a far superior, more responsive option. Find a MX5 workshop that will install it for you. Maybe MX5 Mania will throw on the Fab9 kit. It seems they want to charge almost 14K installed for their kit, so if they charge you $6K to install the FAB9 kit then you'll be ahead? Though really, the 2.5 with a 2860 running low boost will more or less feel as good as anything else. It's a lot of displacement and a small turbo. Think of a more modern RB26 with one stock turbo :p TBH, truth be told I've been driving my own car, and use about 50% throttle at most for 99.9% of the time. Mr Bogan is likely similar so this is all going to be semantics for the use case he actually has. (He'll be happy with anything relative to now) However, the EFR is hands down far superior in this use case. You really, really, really, really do notice it over the Garrett or equivalent.
