Sorry everyone about this rant but just wanted oppinions on basic driving/merging.

last night almost got into a accident as i was driving on the freeway. i was in the left lane driving at about 95km had a car on the right of me slowly over taking me in the middle lane. comimg up to the on ramp saw car merging couldn't change lanes as had a car next to me. the car merged in front of me with about 15meters from me. noticed that i was approaching her really really fast, breaked hard and then changed lanes to the middle, she must of merged into traffic at about 60 to 70km i mean WTF could off crashed and at 95km that would of been bad.

has anyone else been in this situation?

yeh happens all the time

u shoudn't be in the left lane when a merge is coming up.

yes she should merge in line with signposted speed signs but you should plan further ahead.

do what i do sit in the right riding ppls ass so the move :)

Yeah staying in the right lane when a merge is coming up is what I do also.

If I happen to be in the left lane, whoever is in front if speeds are similiar as the merging lane approaches should take pole position :) basic etiquette in my opinion.

What I hate is when you're getting onto the freeway and the car infront of you on the on ramp is doing 70. I normally sit in the right or centre lane of the freeway when im going along.

Yep yep i've had that happen to me too. but i just love it how when i over took her in the middle lane and looked at her she had no idea what just happened and how close she was from an accident.

Wouldn't you have noticed you were approaching the car on the onramp faster than normal as they were going slow and adjusted your speed accordingly as she merged infront of you? I'm all about sitting beside people who can't merge at the right speed to make their lives hard, but if you almost run into them when they do merge perhaps u need to pay more attention :)

Let me add to this:

I hate assholes who ignore the banked up turning lane, drive all the way to the front then push their way in at the start of the turning lane. I hate idiots who let them in even more.

Lol, sometimes i do let them in. =X

+1

Same goes for the 'closed lane' inbound on the Monash... there's signs telling drivers to merge left for 2KM... yet so many people insist on sticking in the lane until right where the lane ends (i.e. there's bollards and a sign in the middle of the lane!) and then trying to merge (usually with no indicator :verymad:). This disrupts the flow even more than usual, and probably only gets them a handful of cars ahead (As they've gotta try and merge into almost-stopped traffic, instead of just slotting into the flow).

You know what GD2ILA? Everyday I ask myself "Why are there so many f$%@ heads?!" A lot of the time it has to do with merging. I cannot think any further to find a reason why they would act that way. It baffles me.

I have no better conclusion. Peace.

The person merging is in the wrong as they must give way or match speed to avoid slowing down freeway traffic.

In saying that, it doesn't matter who is right or wrong if an accident is caused as it affects all parties concerned.

I'm pretty wary of merging cars as you also were, and in that scenario I slow right down and slip in behind the car on my right. Alternatively if there is no space because of other cars I will accelerate enough to clear the slowass merging driver. If I get pulled over I would simply explain that an accident was imminent if I had not of taken such evasive action; this is a perfectly acceptable defence in court.

i have no idea why but i tend to have people who are driving next to me just start changing lanes and neally push me off the road - happened twice on the eastern freeway in last few months - honestly makes me wonder if people are even paying the slightest bit of attention while driving sometimes.. :verymad:

I've also had this happen to me too, really i honestly reckon they just go and not do a head check first. also have seen 2 cars change lane into the same lane and at last second 1 of then notice the other car and quickly swerves back into their lane  . everyday i see a close call where a accident almost happens. only thing i can say is be extra careful and make sure you have insurance :verymad: .

Speed limit is there for a reason! i hate idiots who just put along 10k under the limit and your stuck behind them and people nearly run up your ass,

and dickheads who sit on the right hand lane of freeways doing 90 or something and your up their ass for them to get the F out of the lane and they dont!!! PRICKS

with all these other drivers with either incompetent skill to merge at 100km/h or have incompetent cars to accelerate quick enough to match the speed, even at speed limit 100 you almost had a crash.

imagine the proposed 140 increase of speed limit on the freeway... what would happen if you're on the left lane doing 135 (under the proposed limit) with another car on the right passing you at 140 so you can't change lane, and that same incompetent driver merges in front of you only doing 60-70?

you might actually had a crash already cos you may not have enough space to slow down from 140 to 60 in time...

unfortunately until these kinds of drivers are ironed out to increase their skill to do 140 on the freeway, I dont see how the proposed speed limit increase would ever, ever happened during our lifetime....

I've actually had one idiot STOP in front of me on an on-ramp because there was a car coming down the freeway behind , despite there was a separate lane to get up to speed before merging was necessary.

happens all the time. hate these idiots who can't drive.

at least on the freeway you can use up the breakdown/emergency lane.

the outbound ramp to kings way near crown is the worst, u get 50 metres to merge in. As i was accelerating up to 60kmh to match the traffic speed the idiot infront of me brakes to a complete stop. Made me brake so hard and we were both stuck there till a massive gap in traffic came.
