hi just trying to help others out with the same problem.  my R32 with a RB20DET revved up to 3K rpm and it wouldnt go up any higher unless i floored it and the car would back fire real bad.i took my air flow meter out cleaned it and put it back in.also i loosened the crank angle sensor (the one in  front of the engine on the timing cover for those who dont know)and turned it abit to the left put it back together, tested the car again and instead revs cut out at 5K rpm,so i turned the sensor abit more to the left and now it revs all the way up to the red line no worries.the sensor is adjustable left to right.i hope this helps others.

what you have done is adjust the timing. it may have been cutting out for other reasons and by adjusting the timing you haven't really solved the issue, just found a bandaid fix. it may be that the CAS is faulty, or possibly the coils are stuffed. either way you should get a timing light and check to see what the timing is that you are running now because it may be pinging and that will eventually result in a damaged motor.

Oh jesus! that's really not a good way of resolving the problem unless someone tooled around with the CAS in the first place.

Your timing belt may have skipped and stripped teeth... which is a timebomb waiting to bend some valves.

I'd hook up a laptop and consult software to check the base timing for a start.
