Whats Wrong With The Rb25?

Hi there

My RB25 series 2 has been playing up, and to be honest is giving me the s...ts

It has been burning white smoke for a while now, more so on low load

i replaced spark plugs that were fouled and it is running again an the smoke is pretty much gone at idle but appears when accelerating.

Most of you would say it is turbo, i have an aftermarket garrett ball bearing and it may have a leak in the oil line. The turbo feels down on power.

Now i thought it was low compression/cracked piston before the spark plugs, but with new plugs motor sounds smooth an turbo sounds and feels weak.

as a side note the car has blowby, could it be a problem other the engine thats creating it?

On deceleration the car backfires loud and frequently

also when hot it can be common to not hold idle

Any help is appreciated :P

Best bet do a compression test first to suss that out. How much blow by are we talking? Like filling a catch can up?

well i dont have a catch can ( have to get one) but can see it spit oil out the hks pod filter, and has blown the dipstick out, seems like excess

Just double check over all the standard emission lines coming from the cam covers and make sure the one way check valve or something isn't blocked causing it to pressurise the crankcase. Probably a long shot but the dipstick blowing out is a bit strange with the standard emissions gear.

Only time a dipstick should blow out is if your crankcase can't breath through the cam covers so it finds the path of least resistance, the dip stick.

That or your engine has actually cracked the ringlands. So yep, compression test time I would say.

white smoke... man honestly ur saying its not the turbo yet ur saying the turbos behaving low on power... ?

Do a comp test which i think will just give u peace of mind ... more or less its the turbo..

i will check the pcv valve an everything else again :D

put new spark plugs recently as the old ones were fouled, is idling perfect and is not blowing smoke at idle

there is some oil steaming from under the turbo when its warm.

so i am suspecting the turbo oil return line needs replacing.

Hopefully thats all it is :banana:

Silly question..... But how much oil is in the car????

It sounds a little like it has been overfilled when last serviced.....

nah its not that, it was filled correctly. ive burnt heaps lol to the point where the oil light comes on, an have refilled it a few times

First do a compression test to rule out piston rings and it just generally being a worn motor. If this comes up good then I would be looking at the turbo oil seals leaking.

You say it is white smoke, is it definitely white smoke and not blueish smoke? Because white smoke indicates burning water/coolant which creates steam and a light white smoke. Oil is generally more of a blueish tinge, if it is indeed white you could have a partially blown head gasket.

      Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛

      Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it

      Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!

      Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
