Jamez,

still sourcing the pic for you. However just noticed, mine only lists 15" & 16" tyres?? GTR's come stock with 17"?? WTF

Merli:

Can't see the pics, could you make them any BIGGER

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I wanted to make sure they were big enough for James to print out :)

and it's only 1600x1200... I can post a 3008 x 2000 version if you want :D:(:P

Here's a placard James... looks like I need to speak to Dean again too - my tyres (very common on GTRs) aren't listed; 255/40/17 (Falken Azenis, 94ZR)

I don't want to get done for something as pedantic as a tyre size that's unlisted, especially when they're a safe tyre, rated for high-speed use, when there's people out there running on retreads.

Thanks guys.

Spoke to Police on Friday evening - they're happy for me to replace my tyre placard with one like Merli's (I got from UPI). Do good to know my car can go from defective to fine - by changing a sticker.

So dumb. Such a waste of time...

Anyhoo. Something to be wary of.

Thanks again all for your help.

I'll be sending a letter to the Police and VicRoads regarding this. Will keep you posted.

James

yep, i went through this during rego inspection. Tyre placard said 17" tyres on all four corners but I'd fitted 16s.

The guy said, "either change the tyres or the placard". I changed the placard so it said 16s on all corners and it passed. I was dumbfounded.

I'm thinking of moving up to 17s, so lucky I still have the old placard. This is all VERY strange.

I haven't read all the posts, so what I am about to say may have already been said.

Anyway, I got some new tyres recently. On the manufacturer's info sheet, it stated that load indexes for the Z-speed-rated versons of the particular tyre model were for information purposes only.

I am reading into that that Z-speed-rated tyres do not really have a load index, and therefore as long as you have a Z-speed-rated tyre, then that is sufficient.

Once again, we have a case of people who are neither trained nor qualified in the determination of the roadworthiness of a motor vehicle making decisions on whether or not a vehicle is or is not roadworthy. But then someone has to do it, I suppose.

we have a case of people who are neither trained nor qualified in the determination of the roadworthiness of a motor vehicle making decisions on whether or not a vehicle is or is not roadworthy.

I'm not really concerned about that, so much as the inconsistency of it all. How is it right that I should be able to make my tyre specs legal simply by changing a 50c tyre placard that I could whip up on my laser printer? Similarly, the tyres on my R33 might not be legal on the next R33 I see.

It's not localised to our Jap imports either - a friend who imports Mustangs from the US has the same issue.
