Hey guys. Haven't posted here for aaaages. Was a while without net and then a while without my license, so this was just a tease, lol.

Back on the road now and slowly getting on top of my finances so looking to maybe get some stuff done to the Stagea again.

So I think its about time I replaced the brake pads. For starters I think it's been about 25,000kms of typically fairly aggressive driving since the brakes have been touched. Secondly I'm now having a very quiet scraping noise coming from my front left wheel when I brake, which I believe would be due to very worn pads.

Now I've been pointed in the direction of Lucas for brake pads as apparently they're very good value for money. Good performance and a good price tag.

If I was to go down this path, I was wondering if anyone would have part numbers to suit my '99 S2 RS4-S??

Also, while replacing the pads, I thought, if affordable, it might be worth upgrading the rotors. I don't need/want anything extreme, but having something a bit better than stock to back up the 180 odd kilowatts at the wheels (which is a figure that will only get higher) would be reassuring. I looked at Brembos in the past and they are way out of my budget.

Was just wondering if anyone knows of some good rotors for a good price that would be a nice, modest upgrade for my beast?

(part numbers would be very helpful with any suggestions if possible - Thanks)

Thanks everyone :P

P.S. I had a brief squizz through the brakes thread, but shit... It is a massive pain to read through even a quarter of it when I can only view one post at a time!!

if i remember correctly, R33 GTst brakes or r33 gtr brakes or r32gtr brakes, or r34 gtt brakes if you get the whole set up, but for the r33/r32 brakes require some alterations to the brakelines as per brake thread.

I just upgraded my fronts with Sutimoto 4 piston calipers, can get them off R32 gtr or Z32 300zx (with cooling fins) or off R33 (No fins), the fins make no difference, I found that they fit perfectly on my S1, just had to remove a little orifice from the fluid inlet and I was able to use my standard brake lines with banjo bolt,

to remove the orifice basically get a corse screw and screw it in and then use a claw hammer to pull it out

give the aus300zx forum a look, those guys sell there calipers alot cheaper than the R33 guys, I got fronts with good pads and with DBA4000 slotted rotors for $200,

the calipers use DB1170 pads which are pretty much a standard shelf item in most car shops that ive been in

P.S while your looking at changing them out give them a splash of paint, works wonders in the looks department.

option 1:

qfm hpx pads + slotted rotors

(both off sellers from SAU)

option2:

r34 front callipers (r33 need bushes making up to stop the slop with the 12mm bolts and 14mm mount holes) + r34 310mm rotors

option 3:

r34 gtr brembo's

($$$$$$$)

option 4:

Cheap 8 pot brake kit from Justjap

($2200)

i went with option 2, but i've gotta run spacers on the front to clear the inside of the wheels but aside from that they seem good

option 1 is the cheapest and will take a fair bit of work to overheat and fade and the qfm pads make very little dust too (i'll change to those pads when funds free up)

Hi Adam, if you look at Cheap upgrade then, that work`s well,

RDA SLOTED ROTOR`S, pad of your choice ,brake stopper, braieded line`s & some good fluid,,many change claiper`s but the big PAD work`s well on sloted rotor,

so good luck Cheer`s Chuckie.

Hey guys. Just an update.

At the moment I'm looking at DBA slotted rotors, braided lines and some Bendix Ultimate or Lucas pads.

Will be getting it all priced up over the weekend and hopefully get it all purchased and installed in the next two weeks.

series 2 needs r34 brakes . series 1 needs r33 brakes .

due to mounting bolt sizes

then maybe something like this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...n-300487234.htm

Well after all the talk about R33 brakes bolting straight onto my S2 Stagea, I discovered today that I was mis-informed! :P

Got a set of R33 rotors, calipers and new pads ... and just found out for myself I've wasted my money and time trying to fit them today.

Is there any option for a 'caliper relocation bracket'?

Anyone want to buy an R33 brake kit for their S1 Stagea?

Anyone got an R34 setup they want to swap for an R33 setup?

Really not happy atm. :)

caliper relocation bracket?

i'm assuming you are having problems with the caliper mounting bolts being different sizes? r33 is m12 and your car m14?

if that's the case, just get some sleeves machined up (pretty sure you could prob buy them already done somewhere as it's a common issue) that are 14mmOD and 12mmID to fit into your knuckle and use the m12 bolts to fit the caliper :P

qfm hpx pads - as good if not better than the ultimates and very very little dust compared to the ultimates

i've got lucas twr pads in mine and they seem pretty good, but i haven't laid into them much yet - fairly dusty tho

i had the same thing happen to me - it sucks

hardly any import wreckers have 34 brakes either but try this guy

http://stores.shop.ebay.com.au/Skyline-spares__W0QQ_armrsZ1

thats his ebay store but give him a call cos he regularly has 34 brakes in stock - cost me $300 for the callipers + postage but i think i took his last set

Thats not the biggest problem. I wish that that was all I had to do.

The legs on the Sumitomo calipers are too short (in radius) meaning even dummying the calipers in place, the 297mm rotors are too large for the calipers suited to them (on the R33, but on the S2 Stag they don't work). I even toyed with dummying in place the 280mm rotors and the calipers still fouled on the rotors (even when I spaced out the offset).

So the R33 GTST calipers and 297mm rotors have the right offset, but totally wrong radius (by about 20mm); and

The R33 GSTS calipers and Stag 280mm rotors have the wrong offset, and still wrong radius (by about 3mm).

Something to do with the 14mm bolt pattern for the calipers being close to the centre of the hub.

Well I'm screwed now, because I had a time attack in 3 weeks, and a brake upgrade that isn't working and I've blown money on it already.

:)

I'll give the guy you mentioned a go.

So the disk is too big? Can you just machine the disks down?

If I machine the R33 rotor down to suit the R33 caliper on the Stagea, I'll have about a 270mm rotor left. Less than the stock 280mm ... thats going backwards.

Getting rid of the 33 stuff and hopefully come out of it enough to get the 34 stuff.

that doesnt sound right . they should bolt on . its just the bolt diameter that is wrong . maybe someone sold you different calipers labeled as r33. i dummied some r33s on my series 2 and it was right apart from bolts . you can even buy step down bolts on import monster

i also trial fitted a set to my auto stagea and found the same thing, a set of R33 GTST callipers would bolt up with the only issues being the bolt size on the calliper mount, and the brake line was a little different requiring removal of the flare fitting in the calliper or shortening the banjo bolt.

Was just thinking to myself R33 turbo and R33 N/A brakes must be different yes? Thus why he's having issues?

I have R33 GTST brakes for sale fronts only.

Sumitomo calipers with pads, and 297mm rotors. Yes, I just discovered these do not fit series 2 stagea (but do fit series 1 stagea, and non-turbo R33, and others). Now I need these sold to get my R34 GTT calipers and rotors.

    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
    • ...oops. forgot the TCU end...
    • No I got mine from a friend that had fabricated one … but I had to fit it to my setup which was a hks turbo setup. His was a Garrett -7. So one of my turbos was not a flange for one side … then I had a leak in the welds I had to find a weld shut … in the end the setup was decent priced but I spent a lot to get it fitted. A couple companies I checked would make it but you’re talking 7-9k aud with titanium. No joke mine was 6-7k even second hand after I had to fit it in Hong Kong … labour is expensive here.
    • I'd just like to restate that I don't think anyone here is actually hating I recently sold a car part to a guy who was building a forged auto R34, with MV stall and aiming at ~450kw. I told him that I'm him, from the future and to stop after it explodes once. I told him I knew he won't listen the first time, and that's fine. But if my predictions do come true - Change direction faster than I did. I also said it's probably no coincidence that the dyno plot of a reliable turbo engine starts to look a lot like a N/A motor. :p
    • Got just the wing painted and fitted up to the existing boot. Big visual change and about time after having a GTR wing sitting in the shed since 2018 Headed up to Mallala with a quick obligatory stop in at Boliver OTR Oil control mods seems to have worked. I checked the catch can after session 1 and there was a dribble of water/e85 with barely any oil in it. After session 2 and 3 there was almost nothing and I stopped checking after that. so either great success or catastrophic failure/block of the external breather The GTR wing made a noticeable difference in the 160-185km/h sweepers. It was a very hot day for the cars at over 33C but the previously done cooling upgrade/ducting/water sprayers meant I never saw over 60C intake, 105C water and 100C oil and temps would drop back down very quickly once I shut it down. AD09's are a decent tyre but certainly and expectedly a step down when compared the the CR-S/AR-1 I have had on the car for years of track days. The handling characteristics of my car which I often describe using the Tony Hawks Pro Skater balance mechanic where either side of the center is understeer/oversteer was much more pronounced with no "green/safe" zone in the middle. However, imo it steers well/easily during oversteer largely thanks to the custom ACOSTAL front end. Enjoy a loose lap POV with my mate giggling away as a passenger.   Group photo for Peer Pressure Racing made it back home and gave it a wash Overall a great success compared to my previous two track days where i cooked the Starlets motor and blew up the new diff in the R32
