About f**king time. It should be illegal to smoke in a car FULL STOP. You can't eat, talk on a phone, sms, read, drink so WHY can you smoke.

haha im in france at the moment and i swear I've seen people doing all of the above at the same time while driving a car/riding a scooter!

Also this law is an example of why we need a bill of rights. Soon they will make it illegal to smoke inside ur own house....this is nanny state gone extreme

I wish..

My neighbours are a pack of chain smoking bogans. Where they all smoke is around 10m from my bedroom and directly upwind from it. My room permenantly reeks of cigarettes and it has since I was like 6 years old, it can't have been too healthy for me and not too mention its quite annoying not being able to ever open my window up no matter how hot it is

Damn.... That's f...cked...

How come you can't extend the fence or something? or do they smoke in front of your house? lol

Another fine I hadn't heard of until yesterday is that a Driver now gets a fine if any of the passengers aren't wearing their seat belt. (as well as the person not wearing it)

TMU yesterday caught in front of me 2 guys in truck not wearing their seat belts and fined both and gave the above fine to driver as well. At the time we had just caught Unlicensed driver in Unregistered car and 2 people riding without helmets. 7 fines in 5 minutes.

I am aiming now to catch a person smoking in car with child present as I have already caught a drunk and offensive behavior since the new fines. I'm a non-smoker so I don't believe people should smoke in front of their children anyway.

nothing against you personally but i wonder how many real crimes and criminals were caught yesterday, like riding without a helmet only hurting themselves so i dont see why you should waste your time and tax dollars enforcing commonsense.

i agree smokin in front of kids is not good, but since when do we need the police and the government to tell us how to raise our kids? not that i have any kids but yeh.. you get my drift..

The people I fined without helmets were in their 20's and good crooks with heaps of priors for burg/theft/drugs etc and were loitering around car park. Probably about to break into cars. I hope now that it's OK with you that I fined them and put in field contact in relation to their behavior.

Also our patrol van did catch some "real" crooks too that day. Teenagers that had broken into number of cars and set building on fire too.

How much is the fines for not wearing seat belt? I've heard that the driver loses points too? is that true?

But I still don't understand why people don't wear their seat belt. It's the only thing that keeps you from bouncing around in your car and smashing your head against everything else when you crash.

Well people always say they're only hurting themselves but I don't think that's always the case. Someone has to clean up a scene of trauma with the dead bodies...and if the accident is a third party's fault but you died because you weren't wearing a seatbelt it would pretty well burden that third party for life with the cause of your death, when it could have been a minor accident with minor injuries. I think we all owe each other a duty on the road to practice the safe measures we have available because shit does happen sometimes. Also I share your sentiments about shifting focus to real criminals but I do think this gets done at the same time, you just don't hear about it because real criminals tend not to post on forums that they are getting unfairly targeted by police etc.

I'm not up to date with smoking laws, but last I remember a child is allowed to smoke in their own home if parents consent it. They can even buy cigarettes and give them to their children if they like. I guess the idea behind the no smoking in a car with children is that children do not have the choice to escape the smoke as they cannot drive for themselves? Be interesting to find out real rationale or statistics behind alot of laws.

it's called revenue raising for State Governments. Living in a border region I see how the NSW and VIC police operate. Vic police for the most part seem to get directed to go around trying to defect people, give out fines for everything under the sun etc, NSW cops actually do RBTs and speed cameras in known danger spots and are generally not assholes about trying to find things to canary you for.

They all sit at a table just the other side of a fence that seperates the 2 blocks of land and 95% of the time the wind blows it right over into my room. They all smoke there because they can't smoke inside being a rental property. It doesn't help that there is 8 of them living there all smoking atleast a pack per day, I would say they smoke 200+ cigarettes at that table on an average day. Obviously this is sortof a worst case scenario though and most people wouldn't really be affected by their neighbours smoking

dont take it personally like i said it was just a question.

still rkn fining em for not wearing a helmet is a waste of time, given their history i doubt they would even bother to pay the fine. Frankly id rather you waited in the bush ninja styles until they "attempted" to break into said vehicles and then they may actually get a bit of punishment. Having said that the courts here are so pathetic its not funny so spose all in all was a waste of time.

good on catching the teenages shame they wont see any jail time
