s13-steve
Hey Guys, sometimes i get a "ticking" sound at idle, if i give the engine a rev it seems to disappear but as soon as it returns to idle it starts ticking again - the car is an R33 GTS25T is this a sticky lifter or what? And how do i fix it? Steve Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/ Share on other sites
San-Ni
Hey, I had similar problem, sticky lifter, possible an oil change/engine flush. I read on here, someone had the same problem, ppl suggest change oil, or it could be the injectors (as they make a noise), just search the site, it should be on here. Just done an oil change still does it - is lifter noise a problem? can it cause any damage? i think it may be injectors though as its more a ticking then light tapping Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5324869 Share on other sites
gotRICE?
does it only do it when the cars cold? or constantly? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5324951 Share on other sites

gotRICE?
^^ Me three, but mine does it random. Usually when cold and while its coming up to operating temp, once its been up to temp for a while its ok. So must be oil related. I use Royal Purple, so cant be bad? RB25PWR
Mine does the exact same. It'll tick only when cold or when temp is rising etc. Nfi what it is =\ Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5325427 Share on other sites
bluejeans
i pretty sure it isnt a problem really - also i thought it could just be the fan never had any running issues, actually never really had any issues ever with my engine and its done this for as long as i can remember. i can only hear it when im standing next to the front of my car or have the bonnet up and really listening hard for it. Kinks
injectors, it's normal. don't worry about it BOOM! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5325836 Share on other sites
Dorigecko
Yeah nah. RB25s have hydraulic lifters which can and do wear out. If your lifters are ticking, it means you're more susceptible to valve float at higher revs. From a power output perspective your output will drop slightly due to the decreased valve lift you're receiving. Injectors don't make the same noise as lifters. And your lifter noise will usually go away with an increase in oil pressure. Rest assured it's not 'fixing itself'. battery
get a screwdriver with a long skinny shaft and put the handle to your ear while touching different parts of the engine, its amazing what you can pick up using this method.... exhaust manifold gasket leak is a common one. matticus
I would go with injectors on this one. The ford XR6 Turbo has the same problem from factory and seeing as they based that engine off the skyline they must have thought it was normal If it really is the injectors then I wouldn't be worrying about it. Panko
Probably injectors ! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5334573 Share on other sites

Correct! And the oldtimers use a wooden dowel for even better isolation & discrimination of what the noise is and where it's coming from. TUFF_350
More then likely as stated few times, injectors or lifters. If its freaking you out, get it checked by a reputable mechanic but as far as i know its totally normal. My bosses S5 is crazy loud, hes had it since new, babys it around and its only done 10,000kms. Audi has done all the tests and has forked out for various workshops to check it and put his mind at ease. ARTZ
When its cold isnt that an oil related issue, just means oil is too thick at start-up, and isnt lubing parts of the valvetrain properly which is why it goes away once warm.., This is why i will get this problem more in winter than in summer, which is why it pays to use a lighter weight oil in winter. This is what Ive always thought anyway, cause my work ute always ticks more on winter mornings, but goes away after a few minutes..And if i use a !0-40 instead of the usual 20-50 it does it even less.. This injector thing is news to me...but im listening... karma_syke
just noticed it in my r33 series 2 gtst. seems like its coming from the rear (firewall side) of the air intake manifold. - what is it likely to be, anyone? injectors... right? J40sx
OK guys.. i live in america... seeing as you guys have the r33 in your country im praying on your help!! I HAVE THIS VERY SAME TICKING NOISE...... happens after the car is warmed up...(rb25 s13) coming from the end of engine/bellhousing area/downpipe..... It not a multitude of ticks like the injectors..its one steady tick and its not coming from the head..cant hear injectors from insdie the car.. can hear this noise...... WTF?? Theres not many shops around here who know much about these engines... what could it be..? intake/exaust leak? main bearing?.. its a ticking with the revs.. mostly at idle after its warmed up..? shot a vid to see if you guys could point it out.. but the noise is very faint over the engine noise and cant be picked up by the camera... what was this noise for you guys? It ever get worse or go away!!? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/327197-ticking-in-engine-at-idle/#findComment-5468978 Share on other sites
