Could possibly be an exhaust leak. I think they tick a bit with them!

Its a bit of an asshole of a job to change the gaskets just incase.. might be worth really getting in there to try find out.

Old thread but this ticks doing my brains. I'm thinking the vct valve is closed at idle. soon as you crackthe intake it activates and starts going away from extra oil in lifters. just a thought but i want it gone too. i have a series 2 rb25det

I’m unsure whether the non-NEO 25det has the charcoal canister purge valve sitting above-back of the head but mine was making a pretty irritating ticking (could call it clicking) sound. I replaced it quick so was unable to determine when it made the sound. It seemed to be random to me.

  Yup. Mine was behind the dash. I guess after my IC7 install, the OEM cluster connectors were push into the dash, and the terminals (which are on the exterior of the connector so it contacts the traces in the cluster), contacted the chassis which caused my tail lamp fuse to blow. It also messed with my wideband. Taped them up and that fixed it.
