Am i correct but doesn't the law only affect the P-platers in which receive their P's on or after the 4th of September?

Or is everyone who is under 25 on the roads who can't drive a turbo/supercharged or v8 vehicle?

I am a 20yr old wheel aligner and i get all sorts of high performance cars that i test drive. Most being xr8, ss and xr6 turbo from Jarvis ford, but we still test drive customer cars that are worked, it may be a R31 with 200kw or a 400kw Clubsport. There are plenty of people under 25yrs that test drive performance cars, and will need to to keep their job.

I think the rules are a good idea. However I also see cars like the current gen commodore and falcon 6's as being the highest risk cars for today's drunk P plater late at night. Hence why the idea of culling passengers after midnight is a great idea.

Only issue to combat then is "the mental issue". Unless you can control the mind of the young person then there will always be an issue.

Personally I was more then happy waiting to get my Skyline and think I'm better for having my pintara and lancer. Just made it all the more exciting the day I did the 2 hour trip from the other side of Melbourne back home.

Everything devalues your car. Any modifications you do to your car lowers its value, every km you put on it lowers its value, every day that passes since it's manufacturered lowers it's value. You don't buy a car with the devaluation in mind, or you'd never buy a new car (lowers it's value by 5-10% in an instant).

Personally I tend to think anything that makes it less likely for clueless teens with no driving experience going out there with skylines - doing burn-outs, drift, street racing, other anti-social nonsense that brings skylines and imports a bad name is a good thing.

Besides, every other state already equivelant rules to these in-place already, so it's basically a catching-up thing with the rest of Australia.

Jenna, you make so much good sense here and therefore this post gets 1st prize in this thread :)

2 good points here:

1/ I'd never consider buying another brand new car if my main concern was how much value it loses when it parts company with a dealer.......new cars would never sell!

2/ Ask any local govt dept or any member of sapol who the main offenders (hoons) are and they'll quickly tell you they are the under 25 group.

So we have to thank this group that the genuine motor enthusiasts have been tainted with the same brush......hence making it more difficult to convince the likes of Rann that we need a new Motorsport Complex.

I'm hoping by removing high performance vehicles from the genuine hoons that we return to some sort of sensibility with statuatory authorities again and that the word "Hoon" that didn't exist 20 years ago, disappears again.........sorry if this cuts deep amongst the under 25's but I don't give a shit since some of you didn't give a shit when you stuffed it up for the real motor enthusiasts.

Pete im sure you will agree with my logic., if i explain myself a different way.

let them keep there testicles for now.....

You would be the first to jump on a "squid" as i think the affectionately called, if you seen a inexperienced noob on a fireblade.

so why does the government think that a car is any different?

surely a car that can carry 5 people hitting another car carring 5 people while dragging down anzacs is worse then a noob on a ZX10R?

he can only kill himself. but a car can kill many more.

bike lic are restricted to capacity / power to weight,

inexperienced car drivers can drive whatever they want, or even tow a 25 foot caravan untrained and without any experience,

if i was premier....

cap people under 21 to 100hp per tonne.

increase speed limits to a sensible level instead of all the 2/3 lane highways doing 70kph.

stop fools doing 70 in 100 zones and then accelerating when they get to overtaking zones. (victor Harbour rd) (make it illegal, and police it)

and then teach our youth to drive with good education, and make them do a 1 hr test. scrap the log book.

mandatory reverse parralel park with a trailer, would weed out most of the people that shouldnt be behind the wheel.

as Mark Skaife has said its all about drivers ability, and confidence behind the wheel.

pretty good policy. you got my vote over ranns anyday

Now that would be a good thing to implement into the test. It would help stop all the people who don't really know what they are doing but really want a license anyway.

Can someone please clear this up for me?..

I'm 19 turning 20 on 29th sept this year. Does this mean I can't drive my car anymore?.. Or is it just people getting there p plates after the date

On a side note a little thought people as young as 15 can start a apprenticeship and be qualified in under 4 so that means a fully qualified mech could be as young as 19/20 Now if they was like me and got one speeding fine they get it extended they will still be on there p's.

if you already own the car, you're exempt

and on a side note if i had a 40 - 80k xr6t or a gts etc and i seen a apprentice touching it i would never go to that dealer again.

and there would be some strong words given as i leave.

so dont cry that you wont be able to drive if your a apprentice mechanic.

what a crock.

Not really related to cars, but has some merit in the argument ...

Twice I had a lacky touch/service my motorbikes and twice they almost killed me. One example was when I purchased my used (22,000kms) TL1000R and asked for a new set of tyres to go on. I go for my first weekend ride with it and the brakes are awful. Turns out the pads were down to almost metal. The fu<kwit apprentice had to remove the calipers to remove the front wheel to fit the new tyre. Don't tell me he didn't notice the dangerously worn pads. I was furious!

Another example is I'm getting my Brutale serviced. Decided to go to Hungry's on West Tce for lunch while I wait. Not 5 minutes later I hear a high revving bike coming down the road, back wheel chattering under compression lock as the rider pulls into the same Hungry Jacks ... it was my f**king bike he was thrashing. P-plater had stuck the P plate covering the licence plate (how many red light/speeding tickets did he accumulate?). I burst out the restaurant and reamed the young fool. Thrashing a f**king $19K italian bike!!! He claimed he was test riding it after servicing it. Funny that I only dropped it off in the last 5-7 minutes!!! He must be an awesome guy to service it in 5 minutes and race to Hungrys for the test ride. Left him there and took my bike back to the dealer and reamed them too.

Now when I get my bikes serviced, I ask to meet and speak to the (over 25) person who will be working on my bike. And I know its harsh, but I let them know I will take no bullshit when it comes to my bikes. Treat them like you'd treat your most valued possession.

One of my most favourite stickers: "If you value your life as much as I value my bike ... don't f**k with it!"

:)

Lol thats epic. i cant defend that and wouldnt want to, however there are always some who f**k it up for the rest

that said, i do insist upon a couple of mechanics to do certain parts of my requested work but i still leave minor work to their apprentices sometimes - usually the hateful mundane stuff hahah

-D

I embrace the new laws. I didnt have a turbo til i was on my full license, wasn't that hard.

I have to agree with jrm and sled u guys have made some good points. I'm pretty sure people like mechanics who need to test drive hig powered cars for their jobs are exempt in these situations. I think that the new regulations are generally a positive move, but don't really agree with the no passengers after midnight. I think it will only increase drink driving because young people will find it much harder finding their way home after going out or going to a party where they ahave been drinking, so they might decide to drive themselves. I know we've been saying it for a while now, but building a new dragstrip, track etc where people can safely drive their cars is crucial.

Can't say I disagree with anything you've posted Darren.....the towing of a 25ft caravan that you mentioned is another interesting issue. Amazes me that there aren't any restrictions with towing until a certain level of experience is attained.

I think that initially they were gonna make Turbo Diesels exempt under the new Act but now they've included them in the banned list........Farmhands will be able to apply for an exemption under the Act during working hours if accompanied by a letter from the employer me thinks.

So we have to thank this group that the genuine motor enthusiasts have been tainted with the same brush......hence making it more difficult to convince the likes of Rann that we need a new Motorsport Complex.

im curious as to which category i fall under pete. ive made a few mistakes. generally in my daily while commuting to and from work at holy-f**k-thats-early o'clock in the morning.

and one in the 200 thats coming around to kick me fairly hard again with these new laws coming through.

guess that makes me less than a genuine enthusiast?

I embrace the new laws. I didnt have a turbo til i was on my full license, wasn't that hard.

and i didnt have my celsior until i was on my fulls.

but i wont be able to buy another one for a few years when i do get my licence back.

sorry Dave but I guess you're shit outta luck............I was an absolute maniac on the road when I was a teenager so I guess when I point the finger at you, there were 3 fingers pointing back at me.

My only selfish concern now is my kids, not you guys (sorry) so if I can't stop my reckless kid from driving a $4000 turbo car and the law can, then all power to them.

I'd rather have a live kid that's pissed off with me than a dead one...........buried my dad last month, I'm not supposed to bury my boy :whistling:

I totally agree with your first sentence! but it will make our cars worth even less! as if the car dealers havent had a hard time through the recession, have a look at the closed car yards along main north rd! education is utmost! someone quoted mark skaife and hes dead right!!! instead of saying no you cant drive these why dont the govt educate them how to handle a high powered car , make a wet/dry course at mallala a prerequisite for your licence. Think of this! drugs are banned and people can get ahold of them, good lot these restrictions do! this is another money spinner for the state government!!! a fine applies for driving a high powered car on p plates mmm they have safety in mind, a big BS to them! and by the way who cares what other states do we live in south australia not victoria or nsw. and by the way you can hot up a scooter if you wish and you can do burnouts with a scooter too.

    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
    • Awesome writeup and details. Thanks for sharing the story so far. I can relate to parts of it with my previous car and some of the issues I had to deal with.
    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!
