I have no doubt the manual would be even better though the tip will be better off the mark 90% of the time as there is no driver error, just stomp the gas and whammo, easy repeatable results everytime.

I'm not suprised going uphill you'd smoke an mr2, is it aw11 or sw20 ? An n/a mr2 won't have the balls to keep up with power. It's easier going uphill as you're relying on power.. going downhill you're relying on carrying speed stressing handling characteristics more. It's also more daunting on a driver punting a heavy car downhill due to large tires giving high grip thresholds and that large bulk feeling etc.

E.g. Going on runs with my mate's ek civic with minimal mods, me in a v35 manual coupe 245/275 michelin ps2 tires springs shocks swaybars brembos light weight reduction etc and downhill i'm only tiny bit faster (no speeding in straights, just corner fun). Uphill is just not fair as even 3rd gear torque in the v35 would pull away lol. I consider him a better driver than myself. Had he have the same mods as me he would've completely lost me downhill.

The manual R34's are a lot better :)

As for handling mentioned a few posts ago, I've raced a few of my mates on mountain roads etc.. going downhill my mates NA mr2 (with coil overs etc) would smoke me but going uphill I'd totally smoke him as my car handles like shit going downhill on tight corners, uphill is a different story tho

my mate had a dyno comp at his workshop a few weeks back with the mr2 club. there was one of the older model mr2's there (the ones that are pointy, not the later model rounded shape - i don't care enough about them to know model numbers) and it only made about 80hp. the missus SSS pulsar on the same dyno made 110hp, so i could see how a NA skyline could easily beat it up hill.

Im on my L plates and just recently bought my first car, before I had test drove a 4 speed auto ba falcon xt and it pulled pretty hard, however i also test drove a manual 3.5l magna, one of them vr-x models and it shredded the falcon in every aspect, however it was pretty dodgy so I just left it alone, I ended up getting a manual R31 skyline gxe, It has plenty of power and torque for a first car and they are cheap to, even tho I haven't driven a na r33 I would wager that an R31 with Intake, Exhaust, Mini-spool and Timing to 20degrees would flog any na r32-r33, ive done these mods and it pulls HARD and it would cost you a fraction of the price you would spend on some battered out na r32-33.

The angular shaped ones is the aw11. There were two engine options, a high revving 1.6l and a supercharged 1.6. A n/a line will have alot more trouble against the supercharged aw11 or turbo sw20 (round shape one).
