Wow, I wasnt aware of that, My appologies... The thought never really crossed my mind, Things are way more relaxed here in New Zealand, I dont even run a cat in mine. The police here in Hastings are more interested in people who are drink driving or actually making the roads more dangerous for people to drive on.

i wish all cops were like that.

This thread should be removed so if any cops do read it they wont know how to check

i had a cat on my car. after 12 months there was nothing inside and i did not puch it out or gut it.

what happens if it guts itself? and you recieve a 10k fine? pretty slack imo

I totally agree with you guilt-toy but we all know what the law is like...

Basically the same as your p-plate falling off the back window then you being fined for not displaying (happened to me even tho front plate was up) or being fined for having a brake/tail-light out. We are somehow meant to know every single detail like that...

Rubbish.

If you simply tap it with a torch or similar you can EASILY tell that it is hollow.

Most coppers wouldn't have a clue and most coppers aren't going to lay down on the road and crawl under your car with their torch.

Most people will get away with a gutted cat forever. Only a few people will give the po-po enough motivation to actually go to all the effort of sussing out whether your cat is gutted.

I suspect that a gutted cat would be the last of the OPs troubles if he does find himself attracting the attention of the police regularly, as it is with most people on here. My car is a prime example. Big front mount, pod filter, exhaust, gutted cat, lowered, upped boost. It's very, very "unroadworthy" according to the rules but I don't attract attention and have yet to have a copper even give me a sideways glance. If I do eventually give the cops a reason to have a look over my car they are going to find a myriad of things to pick on me for.

Well think about running into the Fav officer out in Knox.

He can't find anything on your car that stands out (there are plenty out there who modify with smarts), and gives it a simple tap. Oh dear you say...

I can easily see that happening given I've had people @ the EPA take my ECU cover off.

I put nothing past anyone these days, as that kinda assumption is what gets you dicked.

Just as they'd have to prove their good judgement and/or qualifications when defecting you for engine/vehicle modifications?

They don't need to prove anything, they just need to form a hunch that something's wrong, and off you go to a place where people WILL know.

exactly... they cant just whack out a 10k fine like all the scaremongers are saying... they just send you to the EPA, and if you are stupid enough to turn up there with a decat/gutted then you deserve it anyway

Easy just make it so low they cant get under the car to tap the cat to see if it sounds hollow

+1 for being able to smell it to, and if your car's white, be prepared for a fuel stain that wont come off.

you can definately smell it, but as for the stain, just take a can of degreaser to the carwash and it comes off without a hitch

It's actually a 10k fine.

& Hamish, they then send you to EPA who verify you have no cat or internals...

& basicallty it doesn't matter if their thermometer reads 50 degrees out, they are only looking for a difference before & after cat.

& different materials may make a slight difference but not much, & anyway almost all of us run a s/s exhaUst & cat which they can tell by looking

and has anyone here ever seen this 10k fine first hand? dont get me wrong... i certainly wouldn't put it past our antihoon revenue raising government... but i have never heard of it actually being more than an urban legend... i'm sure the fine is big... but not 10k big

also what's with all this tapping business? they can send you to the EPA on simple suspicion, so why would they bother getting on the ground?

not to mention if you run a cat shell welded around a 3" pipe then it doesn't sound hollow anyway

lol ahh the old (i dont want a cat, but i dont want to get in trouble) threads

the post to end all posts

yes decats are illegal

no its not likely someone will catch it (i had none for about a year with stains on the ass and everything, never had any trouble)

yes if you do get caught its 10k fine (willing to risk it?)

if you want to run no cat, dont drive like an idiot and u wont get pulled over

and last but not least, if u live in knox (victoria) DONT even THINK about taking the cat out

Well if you end up getting caught @ a EPA random test/street station kinda thing

fair call... but they would still have to pull the exhaust out to be certain

had a R32 use shoot HUGE flames , and i know i didnt gut it so i guess it came gutted?

the flames popping out the back is a big giveaway too - a cop will throw the book at you if they see flames shooting out the back of your car.

Just get a high flow cat!

dose it still shoot flames with a high flow? :rofl2:

yer everyone alwasy gose on about this 10k fine... but ive never seen or heard of anyone geting hit with it. in saying that my cars got a high flow.... not worth the risk

Unless you have over 300kw most highflow cats wont make much differents to power maybe 1 - 2 kw if there half decent?

So just go highflow or if you want to run decat pipe/ gutted cat. But other than flames and nose its not going to make THAT much of a diff.

Some police use a infra-red thermometer to measure temp before & after the cat. Can't thionk which way it is right now (just woke up) but I think with a cat in place it is hotter. Have had it done to me but luckily I run a cat. MASSIVE fines if you're caught without one...

If your car has the original cat and over 150k old I doubt it would be working anyway so half the cars on the road would fail that test.

It's actually a 10k fine.

I've never heard of a single person EVER being fined $10k in over 7 years of reading forums like these. Surely if you did actually get stung with a fine that big you would be kicking up a huge fuss.

Mine has a relatively new high flow cat and still blows massive flames now and then, it has a fairly rich tune as it was just to get me through an inspection so quite a bit of fuel on the overrun, has anyone experienced this? Would be surprised if someone had piped it, certainly doesn't look like it.

Perhaps.

Remember it operates on suspicion rather than fact in these parts :rofl2:

Plus if their sensors are geting triggered off (as they do), and you claim the cat is fine, tap tap tap... oh dear :D

    • GTSBoy on your suggestion on another thread I had a look at those injectors and ended up getting them because of the quality.  Got the expensive ones.
    • Hey guys been looking everywhere to try and find the correct gtr hood latch support part number but only found the first half and when I search with that number it sends me to an r34. The first part I found was 62515. If anyone could help me with the rest then I’d really appreciate it. Or if there’s some alternative hood latch support that would work even better cause I can’t find any for sale. (Searched on upgarage, partsouq, buyee, rhdjapan)
    • If you've only done the upper control arms on the rear, AND you have changed their length (by more than about 1mm) to set the camber you want, then you will definitely need/want to install traction arms also. Adjusting the camber arms on their own WILL introduce bump steer and make the car unpleasant to drive. Most owners have no idea that their car could behave infinitely better than what they put up with. I'm not entirely sure what the Stageas need, but I am thinking that unless you have massive front spring rates and pretty soft rear springs, you have waaaay too much rear bar. Oversteer city, in my estimation. Combined with possible excessive bump steer from maladjusted arms, that could be a recipe for nastiness. ATR43SS2 is not a highflow. It is an outright replacement turbo. It's a little bit bigger than the largest highflow profile that Tao does. Probably a solid 300rwkW turbo where the bigger highflows will be about 30-40rwkW less. Nevertheless, we're only talking about ~300 rwkW, which is well within the abilities of the stock ECu to run with a Nistune on board. I would do so without hesitation - and I will be doing so when I get my finger out and actually get the injectors and AFM installed. But, if you would prefer to drop a whole lot more money on the ECU side, then I suspect you're looking at Haltech. The Haltech fanbois here will all spout on about all the available engine protection you can have, that you can't have with the Nistune option. And they're right. But it doesn't really come for free either. You will spend more money on extra sensors and the like, plus the work to install them. If the engine was built and therefore represented a big investment to protect, then I'd say definitely do it. If you view the current (and forever into the future) shortage of replacement engines as something to prompt similar protection, then also, do it. If you see a destroyed RB25 as an opportunity to put in a Mercedes or other V12 (like I kinda do)... then your perception of the risk/reward might differ. These are good injectors. You can also get a "better" set of the same with more flow matching, for more $$. 1000cc is where you will want to be. You will need an R35 AFM and adapter tube if you want to stay with Nistuned stock ECU. Otherwise, if going Haltech, you can ignore. As for intercooler. Just about anything will do. You're only talking about ~300rwkW. Just put a big core in there. Be aware that return flows do add significant pressure drop and will cost power and will make the turbo work harder to achieve the same goals. If you can manage a proper crossflow, do it. I'm keeping my very good return flow because I'm only expecting to be in the ~250rwkW range, and will live with whatever outcome I get.
    • I have a heap that i have collected if you want some authentic ones still. Pm me if your interested!
