stop being a fkn girl n bash it out. if you replace the whole thing with a straight bit of pipe, that is stupid. I've been through an EPA test station with mine bashed out, guy asked me if it was, I replied that I hadn't touched it since I bought the car. Who was to say it hadn't blown itself out of the exhaust?

yeah, but you cant get a fine for not running a cat unless they physically remove the decat and look inside

the worst they can do is tell you to go in for a full emissions test

and "tap tap" will never hold up in court

The roadside inspection stations can and do issue fines on the spot.

You do not have to be reported for a full EPA as they have all the equipment with them on the mobile station that they setup :)

So you get a fine on-spot, and then a FULL EPA as well to go and then ensure you "comply" after the fact by "X" date.

Unless you have over 300kw most highflow cats wont make much differents to power maybe 1 - 2 kw if there half decent?

So just go highflow or if you want to run decat pipe/ gutted cat. But other than flames and nose its not going to make THAT much of a diff.

Hamish is right. I removed cat and got 5rwkw top end and 30!!!! read 30! rwkw in the midrange. makes a huge diff @ higher power figures

Also about police checking if you have a cat. What they do is measure your exhaust to see how far the cat is, then they ram a flexible rod down your exhaust. If it goes further than the measured point they know its not there. Be careful of that one!

The only way they could possibly do you for hollowing out your cat is is they pull it off. No manner of equipment, short of a long pinhole camera, is going to hold up otherwise. "Tap tap" or emissions won't prove that your cat has been bashed out. It' might prove that your cat is worn out (or hollow) and that would see you recieve a notice to fix it and maybe a small fine for having an unroadworthy car.

"It was like that when I got it" would easily see you walk away from court with an order to fix it and a reprimand for the police for wasting the courts time with such trivial matters when a simple "fix it, take it the VicRoads for an inspection when you do and don't do it again" would have sufficed in the first place unless it's the 8th time you've been done for these types of offenses.

do cops here in nsw go these extreme measures ?

what if u bought a car with a bashed out cat and u did not know about it? and happen to get done for it? guess its still your fault as your in posestion of the car...suxks i guess

just go high flow and u have nothing to worry about

yeh, i get that, but what i meant was you cant get a fine for not having a cat unless they pull it...

you can and will get a fine for noise etc

Mine has a relatively new high flow cat and still blows massive flames now and then, it has a fairly rich tune as it was just to get me through an inspection so quite a bit of fuel on the overrun, has anyone experienced this? Would be surprised if someone had piped it, certainly doesn't look like it.

i got a high flow and it apparently pops flames

and youd be pretty unlucky to actually get done by a cop for a gutted cat

Kinda skipped ahead on the thread here to add an after thought;

Hi-flow cats aren't expensive. The people upgrading them have usually spent many thousands upgrading fuel and air systems already, and with the quality of metal cats and the likes nowadays, why wouldn't you use one?

I've read time and time again you will hardly get ANY performance gains between a decat and hi-flow, so why would you knowingly poison our atmosphere, and (not aiming at anyone in particular) add to the negativity that these cars already receive?

Not to mention the damage to your car, the 'book being thrown at you', etc

Is 10kw (or less) really that important?

--

Always use a cat. Read around, the days of negativity regarding cats are diminishing.

Edit (I was also under the optimistic impression that people who own 350+kw cars understand how they work - including the cat - and can weigh the goods and bads (as they would with their self control of their right foot) and hopefully choose the right thing to do here.

Read the thread mate. I mentioned the power difference between a high flow cat and a de cat on my car. Huge difference in mid range power/torque

Your results don't make much sense, it should cause the biggest increase in power towards redline, not in the midrange. Was it a back to back dyno on the same day?

Which cat did you have? "high flow" can mean different things to different people - especially if you work in the marketing department for a cat converter company....

For me, not running a cat is for people that piss in the street and throw McDs wrappers out the window... low brow.

I can certainly tell if there is a CAT or no CAT with my 3.5" exhaust :D

CAT is a CATCO 4" item, and without a doubt I can tell performance wise.

Doesn't show particularly much on the dyno however as it is more in throttle response and similar which is not really evident on rollers.

Hence i always say get the biggest CAT you can, 4" (if you are a 3" exhaust) or 4.5" is you are 3.5"

what about people that run a decat AND e85?

As we are still running 15 percent petrol they will always force e85 cars to run one, until they exempt ethanol from their silly emissions ideas like they did with LPG (and allow straight ethanol) we are going to have to leave the exhaust blocker there. :/

I would be interested to see these gains for myself...

I am in the process of making a quieter (stealth) system, I bought a 4 inch highflow but I would like to fit a decat while on the rollers to see what all the fuss is about. Is it worth trying?

I had better order some more flanges. :/

    • So been ocd with timing mark but checked from few angle and seems both cam are on and crank is matching as well to the slot on sump and crank pully i noticed crankshaft cover has been robbed as per attached pic. Any ideas why? Could my balancer or harmonic be on its way out? should I replace the cover? https://ibb.co/ZR1JFYRR
    • So now doing the change and first time dealing with rb so little nervous giving engine power and potential for screwing it up When you align all marks and then remove crank bolt, timing move little I assume you can put the bolt back in once you have removed the pully to get timing to where you want? here is pic of my both intake and exchust cam aligned, depending on angle you look they seem to be either aligned or a half tooth or so out. Any thoughts? Should you angle your face and look at each mark that way as if looking straight rather than from above as it can be misleading https://ibb.co/ZpnhcvbF https://ibb.co/4wm2wn4q
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy Haven't really thought of that yet, but you are right. If the hose was damaged it should be absolutely pissing by now. I'll put some heat sleeve around it for good measure since I'm already removing the line anyway. Maybe I'll put on some of the stock hardlines if I ever fully remove the turbos again. Maybe when T51R modding the compressor housings? Might be a fun mod on GT28s for that "fake single turbo" effect.
    • Update 1: I did some work on the car already before finalizing this post and my "issues" list. I dropped the Tomei exhaust in favor of the HKS Hi Power Silent. Sounds nice and I can actually hear myself think now. Also gives me a realistic chance to legally drive without silencer inserts. A bit of cheating was necessary to still be able to mount the Top Secret style diffuser. Some malusage of washers and a bit of "convincing" toward the brackets and exhaust hanger seemed to do the trick. The shaky steering wheel has been resolved as various suspension components were worn, like sway bar bushings and link bars. Most notably the two steering tie rod ends. Had some trouble finding bushings because my sway bars are not OEM thickness, 23.x up front and 27 rear. But non adjustable, so no aftermarket I suppose. Maybe they are nismo units? Turbo oil drain hoses were definitely still the originals and are new now. Wasn't the cause of the turbo oil leak sadly. Currently removing the rear turbo because of it, I suspect the braided oil feed line is the culprit. This issue needs to be dealt with so I can work towards actually getting the turbo setup legal and inspected. Two new issues to add to the list as well. Rear Main seal is probably leaking. Time will show how bad it is, I don't really want to drop the gearbox right now just for the stupid seal. Could fix a few other things in one go once I do that. Front right driveshaft grease is going past the cv boot, so at some point I'll fix that too.
    • Ok so no 4cyl clutch... Yeah it is a factory manual. So if iam correct i need clutch and flywheel too? I can use something that suits something like R32 GTST? EDIT: https://www.ebay.com/itm/224291042776 Is this ok? EDIT2: i maybe forget to mention this(dk how important it is) but the trans will be behind RB25DET NEO(iam doing swap) It will be there for a little while. Iam planing to do bigbox or BMW tranny..
