I had a good look underneath the car today just to check for any problems and came across evidence of a small leak.

I'm unsure if this is a common thing on the M35's but just looking if anyone can help give me an idea where this leak is coming from.

From what I can see, it looks like it might be coming from loose hose clip.

The leak doesn't seem major, and there's no drips under the car overnight so far.

Looking at sorting out the leak, if anyone has any idea or can help, your input would be appreciated :)

It could be a few things, most likely the rear of the passenger side rocker cover, they are well known to leak from there. Fixed with a replacement rocker gasket.

It could also be one of the plug hole seals, mine had completely filled the rear plug and spilt out under acceleration. Fixed with a smear of silicone.

Hopefully it isn't the oil inlet for the turbo, its a pain to get at. Can you see oil weeping from the top? See if you can get the camera in there.

I've inspected the rest of the engine bay as much as i can but couldn't trace it any further than that clip and where the arrows are.

I can't see anywhere else where the leak is coming from besides this part.

It doesn't seem to be leaking much (as in there are no visible drops on the ground yet). The car should still be fine to drive for now, right?

Hey Dimi, you picked it up last week so it's still under warranty. Take it back and ask them nicely if they can rectify the problem? You didn't pay for a car with an oil leak so they should have no problem fixing it for you.

I think it is engine oil.

You might be right though. They might have fixed the leak already because it doesn't seem to be dripping at all.

So what i'll do is degrease it and sus it out after a good 100kms worth of driving. If the leak persists, i'll contact the dealer and ask them if they could rectify it. They should be cool about fixing up the leak, right?

I might give them a call today at lunch and ask them if they sorted out or noticed a leak before.

Okay, so i degreased everything and took it for a good 100km drive.

I can now see more clearly where the leak is coming from.

The leak is there and i can smell it when the car is at idle with the fan on.

It's at this odd location just on top of the turbo.

What are your recommendations on this? Take it back to the dealer and ask them to help me rectify the leak? I've only had the car for 7 days.

My car is leaking slowly from the same spot, it is the rubber rocker gasket by the looks of it. They will probably order one in and fix it, you could of course get it yourself and fit it if the dealer isn't local.

I would change the plugs while you're there if they haven't been done already.

I see. Well at least i now know it's not an "impossible fix".

It seems like a slow leak on mine too.

How long has yours been leaking for Scott?

pretty sure they have to fix it under the statutory warranty that you get from a dealer - 1 month and 5000(?) kms i think

How it passed a roadworthy with that much oil underneath, I have no idea.

I fixed mine myself as I didn't want the dealer touching anything else on the car... I should have bought a new seal though, instead I used silicone and it only lasted a few months.

Thanks fellas. I called them and they were nice about it. I'm going to go there this afternoon to have a chat then i'll leave the car with them on Sunday afternoon. Hopefully it doesn't take long to repair.

    • I remember the days when E85 was priced in according to the $ per km outcome. Sure E85 was about 35% cheaper, but you also lost about 35% range... now it's fked..
    • They do. The pale yellow translucent ones from Japan were .... I dunno. Useless? Whiteline and SuperPro are probably fairly similar. There's bound to be a range of different hardnesses amongst the dozens of options on the market. The simple fact is that the pineapples don't get up inside the bush at all. They just sort of exist in the space between the washer/bracket and the subframe's bush outer tube, and...exert a bit of force between them? Or something like that. I'm sure that with enough provocation, they will simply allow one to more wrt the other.
    • I'm not sure they came in different hardnesses? Going from memory only - I had set them up in the balanced setup. I also have poly bushes, so I have both poly bushes and pineapples. This is what my memory tells me at least. I'll have to take a look under there to be sure. The tramp was so bad that I managed to eject/kill a diff bushing, so those I know are stock. The tramp is bad enough that you are 200% sure you are doing severe damage to the car. It's not just chirping or vibration, it feels like you're hitting a speed hump/kerb 10 times a second. The issue has persisted between subframes! (I went from Hicas to non hicas subframe and replaced every bush a few years ago now) so I'm entirely lost. Every arm is factory.
    • Can recommend the Frenchys kit, been using it 2 years now with no issue, very happy with it.  Only thing for me was upgrading the thermo fan but I am super fussy on cooling.   Also interested in electric AC, partly for boot mount to have a clean bay and partly would love the idea of cooling off the car before i get in. The battery setup to do that might be tricky / expensive though.  Found this an interesting watch.    
    • I put Whiteline pineapples in my old 33, they came in a 6 pack of them, got rid of the axle tramp altogether, cheap, quick and easy install,  they were pretty solid units though...???high durometer???? and NVH was increased a fair bit How hard are the ones you installed?
