yeh i got that heatproof sleeve on all my braided lines (expensive stuff) and ill be heat wrapping my oil drain too just for protection!

took me a while to wrap it, still not 100% happy but its more than ok!

@rad32 I dont have any heat proofing on my lines but they're braided? are they really going to suffer that much? My oil feed also runs down between two manifold runners also.

Your manifold is certainly a tight fit in there - heres the space around mine...

yeah v.weird but the manifold I have was a T4 one that I had a T3 flange welded onto but its strange that there's so much room. that said its a 33gtst shell.

is it worth me fitting these fire hoses around the lines then? Is there an alternative like some high temp silicon hose maybe?

i herd its good, i guess anything to extend the life!

oh and i have to space my manifold 10mm out as the turbo would foul on the rocca covers! LOL

ah I imagine my own turbo might have done the same then if it wasn't for the T4/T3 adaptor plate welded on :)

cylinder head had to come off thanks to the stubborn manifold studs.. turned out 2 valves needed sorting and it needed a slight skim n refresh...

wondering if anyone can help me here with the oil return

a friend of mine sent me this link to ATP turbo - I'm tempted to order it for my gt3076... piccy below...

If I ran with that, can anyone tell me what thickness I'd need my oil return pipe? I dont want to order it too thin. I THINK its a 3/4" pipe like a heater hose but I dont know if thats right or not?

on the end of it I would need a -10 AN female screw fitting to screw onto that oil return flange. However.. on the other side I'm not so sure. I've been told I can unscrew the fitting on my block below...

...and then fit another fitting but I dont know what size it would be really. I'm also concerned because the pitch for the oil feed adaptor into my block was slightly different from the one on the turbo.

so I think to sum up I need to know:

1 what thickness of oil return line to go for?

2 what fitting I need in the block for the oil return.

any advice for this would be brilliant guys - you've all been massively helpful as it is and theres a fonte of knowledge on this site with you guys mostly having done this conversion far more than the uk has heh! :D

i'd be a bit concerned about how close your braided lines are to the exhaust side of the turbo, just cooked my braided line which was close like yours, got a hard pipe section made up, cost about $40AUD, was told exhaust side of turbo gets up past 700 degrees and braided lines are rated to about 350 degrees...and make sure your water feed and return are on different sides of the pump so there is a good flow.. you can't go too big on the oil return, I think mine could even be 1". good luck

yeah I need to adjust how they're seated - that pic is a bit old now. It'll be free of the exhaust side of the turbo soon enough and if I can protect them then I'll do my best. I'm looking at purchasing a turbo jacket anyways.

its not so much the oil return pipe I'm worried about as the fittings - I've read all kinds of bits about how the thread in the block is tapered or something. I'm just a little in the dark about it all. Basically I would need:

-ATP oil return flange for the turbo -10 AN

-gasket for flange

-piping (braided or metal) - 1" or 3/4"

-10 AN female fitting on the end of the pipe

that sorts the side that bolts to the turbo I think...

...but then I'm in the dark about what comes off the block? What thread pitch and what size bolt will that oil return fitting on my engine be? If I know this I can get the adaptor that will fit in my block and have the other side of the oil return line fitted with the correct female end?

I'm just looking at this wiki and i would hazard I guess I actually need -12 AN ?!!

okay this is what I have so far...

oil return flange for turbo + gasket

oil return flange from ATP

for the block I unscrew my current oil return push on fitting (pic attached) and install this....

adaptor for block

my understanding is that I screw the side that is 3/4 NPT into the block?

Then I just get a braided -10 AN hose made up with a -10 AN female end on both sides. Is that right?

sorry for all the questions but if anyone can offer a thought to this that would be great. I'm no good at bojjing bits with a welder and I really dont want to do it on what is arguably one of the most important bits of the car!

ill take pics of how my lines are sitting but i have a feeling they run abit too close to the rear housing..

are hard lines expensive? dont really wanna do it as i just bought all new speedflow fittings!

I was told by Richard @ RSP over here in the UK that I ideally need a metal pipe running off the turbo.. at least to get past the manifold and the heat. Then the latter 1/3 of it can be silicon hose on the push on fitting (stock fitting) on the block.

My plan is...

buy this for the block... remove oem push on fitting and install...

earls -10 AN to 3/4 BSP adaptor

buy this for turbo...

-10 AN oil return flange for GT series turbo

then contact earls here in the UK and have them make me a 60cm oil return hose with straight -10 AN fittings on either end. I'll buy some fire sleeve for the oil return too to help keep the heat from the manifold off it. I think this will be the neatest option personally.

i think im gonna get my exhaust shop to wed some tube onto my drain and bend it down to the block and attach it with an inch of hose..

then heatwrap/sleeve the tube..

coz the drain is gonna be Fecking close to the manifold..

also bought a turbo beanie to help my lines seeing as there real close!

yeah I might yet consider having Earls make up a metal pipe for me with the straight -10 AN fitting on one side just so I can get it past the manifold. I might phone them to see if they can come out ot me and make it up for me in situ. But first I need the oil return flange and the adaptor for the other side.

oil return flange.. bloody thing is $60 dollars shipped to UK.. why aren't these things included with the turbo? Its clear you cant fit anything to the turbo oil return location unless you run the oem one off it :D hey ho..

My oil return tube is about 100mm and i had to cut and weld it to a 15-20 degree angle because it was fowling the manifold. the oil returm hose touches the manifold.

Its all worth it ......... I miss my car :P

I'm contemplating just phoning a metal worker and asking them to come out and make me one up instead so I have a hardpipe instead. I've had enough trying to faff on with fittings especially purchase the sodding things here in the UK. the oil return flange for the turbo is $28 then a gasket $3

shipping.... $28 ?!!?!!??!!?!!!!!!!! for f**k sake man.

honestly I'm fed to the back teeth of this - I've sat staring at this car now wondering what to do with this sodding oil return line for the last 2 weeks. Everytime I come up with a method I just hear someone come up with a reason as to why I shouldn't go that route... its like NO method exists at all.

thoroughly fed up with all this now I really am :P

    • Now that the break-in period for both clutch and transmission is nearly over I'd like to give some tips before I forget about everything that happened, also for anyone searching up how to do this job in the future: You will need at least 6 ton jack stands at full extension. I would go as far as to say maybe consider 12 ton jack stands because the height of the transmission + the Harbor Freight hydraulic platform-style transmission jack was enough that it was an absolute PITA getting the transmission out from under the car and back in. The top edge of the bellhousing wants to contact the subframe and oil pan and if you're doing this on the floor forget about trying to lift this transmission off the ground and onto a transmission jack from under the car. Also do not try to use a scissor jack transmission lift. You have to rotate the damn thing in-place on the transmission jack which is hard enough with an adjustable platform and a transmission cradle that will mostly keep the transmission from rolling off the jack but on a scissor lift with a tiny non-adjustable platform? Forget it. Use penetrating oil on the driveshaft bolts. I highly recommend getting a thin 6 point combination (box end + open end) wrench for both the rear driveshaft and front driveshaft and a wrench extension. These bolts are on tight with very little space to work with and those two things together made a massive difference. Even a high torque impact wrench is just the wrong tool for the job here and didn't do what I needed it to do. If your starter bolts aren't seized in place for whatever reason you can in fact snake in a 3/8 inch ratchet + 6 point standard chrome socket up in there and "just" remove the bolts for the starter. Or at least I could. It is entirely by feel, you can barely fit it in, you can barely turn the stupid ratchet, but it is possible. Pull the front pipe/downpipe before you attempt to remove the transmission. In theory you don't have to, in practice just do it.  When pulling the transmission on the way out you don't have to undo all the bolts holding the rear driveshaft to the chassis like the center support bearing and the rear tunnel reinforcement bar but putting the transmission back in I highly recommend doing this because it will let you raise the transmission without constantly dealing with the driveshaft interfering in one way or another. I undid the bottom of the engine mount but I honestly don't know that it helped anything. If you do this make sure you put a towel on the back of the valve cover to keep the engine from smashing all the pipes on the firewall. Once the transmission has been pulled back far enough to clear the dowels you need to twist it in place clockwise if you're sitting behind the transmission. This will rotate the starter down towards the ground. The starter bump seems like it might clear if you twist the transmission the other way but it definitely won't. I have scraped the shit out of my transmission tunnel trying so learn from my mistake. You will need a center punch and an appropriate size drill bit and screw to pull the rear main seal. Then use vice grips and preferably a slide hammer attachment for those vice grips to yank the seal out. Do not let the drill or screw contact any part of the crank and clean the engine carefully after removing the seal to avoid getting metal fragments into the engine. I used a Slide Hammer and Bearing Puller Set, 5 Piece from Harbor Freight to pull the old pilot bearing. The "wet paper towel" trick sucked and just got dirty clutch water everywhere. Buy the tool or borrow it from a friend and save yourself the pain. It comes right out. Mine was very worn compared to the new one and it was starting to show cracks. Soak it in engine oil for a day in case yours has lost all of the oil to the plastic bag it comes in. You may be tempted to get the Nismo aftermarket pilot bearing but local mechanics have told me that they fail prematurely and if they do fail they do far more damage than a failed OEM pilot bushing. I mentioned this before but the Super Coppermix Twin clutch friction disks are in fact directional. The subtle coning of the fingers in both cases should be facing towards the center of the hub. So the coning on the rearmost disk closest to the pressure plate should go towards the engine, and the one closest to the flywheel should be flipped the other way. Otherwise when you torque down the pressure plate it will be warped and if you attempt to drive it like this it will make a very nasty grinding noise. Also, there is in fact an orientation to the washers for the pressure plate if you don't want to damage the anodizing. Rounded side of the washer faces the pressure plate. The flat side faces the bolt head. Pulling the transmission from the transfer case you need to be extremely careful with the shift cover plate. This part is discontinued. Try your best to avoid damaging the mating surfaces or breaking the pry points. I used a dead blow rubber hammer after removing the bolts to smack it sideways to slide it off the RTV the previous mechanic applied. I recommend using gasket dressing on the OEM paper gasket to try and keep the ATF from leaking out of that surface which seems to be a perpetual problem. Undoing the shifter rod end is an absolute PITA. Get a set of roll pin punches. Those are mandatory for this. Also I strongly, strongly recommend getting a palm nailer that will fit your roll pin punch. Also, put a clean (emphasis on clean) towel wrapped around the back end of the roll pin to keep it from shooting into the transfer case so you can spend a good hour or two with a magnet on a stick getting it out. Do not damage the shifter rod end either because those are discontinued as well. Do not use aftermarket flywheel bolts. Or if you do, make sure they are exactly the same dimensions as OEM before you go to install them. I have seen people mention that they got the wrong bolts and it meant having to do the job again. High torque impact wrench makes removal easy. I used some combination of a pry bar and flathead screwdriver to keep the flywheel from turning but consider just buying a proper flywheel lock instead. Just buy the OS Giken clutch alignment tool from RHDJapan. I hated the plastic alignment tool and you will never be confident this thing will work as intended. Don't forget to install the Nismo provided clutch fork boot. Otherwise it will make unearthly noises when you press the clutch pedal as it says on the little installation sheet in Japanese. Also, on both initial disassembly and assembly you must follow torque sequence for the pressure plate bolts. For some reason the Nismo directions tell you to put in the smaller 3 bolts last. I would not do this. Fully insert and thread those bolts to the end first, then tighten the other larger pressure plate bolts according to torque sequence. Then at the end you can also torque these 3 smaller bolts. Doing it the other way can cause these bolts to bind and the whole thing won't fit as it should. Hope this helps someone out there.
