Turbo 'whistle'

Hi all,

I have a R33 GTS25t with a GT-RS. I'm not sure what the issue is, but the turbo whistle is too loud. It basically sounds like its spooling, but happens at very very gentle throttle angles. Pretty much just off idle it starts, cruising at 110km/h its a constant whistle (i.e. really, really annoying).

Does anyone have any experience with this turbo? My mechanic suggested it was because I used to have a foam filter on which does not block any noise, however I changed it to a K&N item and it's only slightly quieter.

Other things I have pondered include the BOV leaking (its a standard item) and some sort of resonance in the intake piping. The second option doesnt really make sense though as the whistle happens all the way through the rev range. I'm just hoping its not a problem with the actual turbo.

It is getting tuned on Wednesday and that is one of the things my mechanic is checking, just wondering if anyone's been through this already...

seriously how can u not like the sound of a turbo spooling!!

yes the standard airbox will shut it up

and i remember SKYRYAN (from perth) in his forsale section a lil while back said he had a gt-rs and said its f**king loud, theres nothing wrong mechaniclly with it, thats just how those turbos are - fkn loud. throw him a pm might be able to help ya out

pretty sure u got a few grub screws in the front housing that holds the port shrouded cover in place... remove it and ur whistle will disapear..

i was running a gt3076r port shroud and i got over the whistle after a few weeks... only decent whistle is a hks t51r or t04z on 30psi bahah :D

Yeah, that might be the go. Pretty keen to keep it looking as stock as possible under the engine bay so that would tie in nicely.

Its a bit anti social.. and plus I don't think the po po would appreciate it. Plus, its reaaaaally annoying on long drives. Acceleration spool is cool, yes. Constant drone, no.

If you get a Buzzz ..z zzz z.zzz sort of bearing noise on vehicle power off. It could be bearing noise. Which means they needs replacing.

Nah no noises like that to report..

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a port shrouded comp cover, what are its benefits and will it do anything if I remove it?

You wuill see on most larger sclae turbo the inlet has little holes or a lip in it. It is there to stop or help reduce compressor surge.

Due to the amount of boost these turbos run it help created a bit of turbulence and the air running over these "holes" is what is creating your whistle.

I am sure there is more to it, but that is my limited knowledge.

Its just the way GT-RS turbo's are. I have a GT-RS turbo with a APEXi pod filter, and YES it is extremely loud whistling noise. On a long drive it does get annoying, but my exhaust is pretty loud too, so it drowns it out a bit, and i always have my stereo at a decent volume so it does not bother me too much.

Put a stock airbox with snorkel back in and there will be ZERO whistle. But the trade off is you can hardly hear your turbo at all........

At first the whistle was a bit much, but its grown on me nicely. I borrow my mates ute sometimes and he takes my car, and he freaking loves it, even if he does not have to go anywhere he goes for a drive...... so whatever floats your boat i guess.

Other option is to get a bigger turbo that doesnt spool when cruising on the highway :happy:

Yes! You get it.. cruising noises are just irritating. GT-RS was chosen because it has similiar lag to standard.. it passed over the pits but will still flow 400hp :happy:

      I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .

      Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?

      100% accurate!  We are a pack of know it alls....  But, I bet people go to you when they have a problem! I've been on a bit of a clean up rampage too over the past month!  I've thrown more shit in the bin over the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 3 years combined! Anyway, it's all good fun being different! My wife sometimes does not agree!

      ADHD in all form isn't about "can focus, or can't focus" or is hyper active or isn't etc.   It's all a dysregulation. Either time feels to be stationary, or time just vanishes in a split second. We are either under focussed on the task at hand (as we're over focussed on our surroundings) or we have no idea an atomic bomb went off beside us as we're so hyper focussed and locked in on things.   Not to mention the rapid fire thought process. What it takes a "normal" process to think up a solution to a problem, ADHD will be able to give you 5 different ways to solve the problem, and the pros and cons of each. While we can be highly impulsive and lack the ability to "control ourselves" we can also become paralysed with the inability to make a decision for ourselves. While most of us have an OCD like requirement for perfection, we lack the ability often to remain focussed to get things to a perfect state. Those with undiagnosed ADHD as adults, can often find the last part actually stops them ever attempting to do things that they have the ability to do, as the reasoning is often "if I can't do it perfectly, it's not worth doing"   As for projects... Ha ha ha, I still need to take the other half of my wall trim down in the Fiance's office so I can paint it. Need to finish digging and running the back yard drains, my R33, getting the Ninja bike registered (now being sold), the moped project, fixing either of the lawn mowers so they're reliable, along with a myriad of other things.   It's why I've been going through lately and just being brutal and clearing projects off that I won't actually ever complete. IE, moped will go to the tip, or be given away, bike is being sold, Subaru project being sold, some parts for other projects given away. Or I've been making myself focus on one thing at a time, by ticking off the smallest quickest ones first.   There's also a reason by our mid twenties we seem to be "know it alls", as we've all been down some of the weirdest and oddest rabbit holes when you follow the dopamine trail. It's often also why we're more a jack of all trades, but not a master of one.   However, pretty much all of my hobby projects, in one way or another, all come back around to automotive. That's my zen area.
