GTR to pass EPA - what else to do...

Recommended Posts

Having gone through a thread populated with comments from Whistla and Pred (thanks boyos) - I think I know what I need to do... but I have a few uncertain bits.

Cat: Perhaps I should get one? - no more flames ;)

Exhaust: According to Fujitsubo - it meets Jasma compliance at 95dB. Is this too close?

ECU: Mr PFC has to come out :D Asked Jack to borrow a stock one.

Pods: HKS twins - caged but not covered. Cop who did defect said they OK. Are they?

FMIC: R33 N1 item - factory option.

Rest of piping is stock.

The queries:

AVCR: Do I have to remove it? Or can I run stock boost and be OK? If I have to remove... how much do I take out?

O2 sensors: Dr Drift suggested these might be stuffed - hence my aircraft carrier style fuel consumption - will they affect the emission test? My thinking says yes...

Thanks in advance for help :D

i asked nige about bleed valves and boost gauges being leagal or not. he said technically they arent, because it can wreck the emmisisons of a car, even if its at a stock boost, their is still chance that the user would put higher boost and they dont like that (even if your pfc fixes all the emmissions) and plus the pfc has to come out anyway

im guessing fmic is ok because its standared

with the turbos, as inasnt always says, the cops, vicroads, and epa always have their own rules for some weird reason. best to check with epa about that, but i dont see how the turbos could affect emmissions or whatever? i dunno really

Thanks guys.

Dox: Turbos are stock - so they'll be OK.

Troy: Like they say, sneakiness is next to godliness... but in my case would I still have to remove all the AVCR hardware - both in-car and under-bonnet?

I received a 'noise' one today - and am expecting an 'emissions' one very soon.

Noise was TMU on Chapel on my way home from Coles - didn't stop me but I guess they don't have to. The other was a defect inspection at a booze bus. Cop said as I have the AVCR he has to send me to the EPA... so I guess it is just the standard Macleod one.

Pretty annoyed about the whole thing - been a bad week.

oh a simple one....just take the sh1t off and put it back on after.....a mate of mine got done the full hog(Big turbo, external waste gate, custom plenum ect) and when he got there they had laminated pics of the engine bay from when he got done...he fitted a standard motor the guy just came over pulled the hood then closed it then walked away...its not a major check out...should be easy for you...

Hey james.. so you get the magic letter too ;) It can take a month or so to arrive.

Yeah, its nothing to stress about.. The EPA guy I dealt with was pretty cool, and I've never really heard any horror stories about the checking, but the EPA guy will read what the cop has put on it. If the cop is being a bitch you might have to watch.,

With the boost, yeah, better to set it back to stock. They WILL definitely check for a stock boost solenoid, they know how to look for that. Same for an aftermarket BOV. They'll stick a torch under the car to make sure you have the required cat too.

EPA guy looked at my big old HKS FMIC and said "one intake is fine, either one of pod or intercooler and you can pass". I'd put the stock airbox on.. its a 20min job.

They basically test you for emissions with a doova up the back zorst and the CO levels at 0.xx% (or whatever the figure is), so anything that plays with the level probably isn't a good idea. I'm sure there is enough leeway for you to pass with a boost controller and PFC but its best not to risk it.

I reckon you'd wanna be careful with stuffed o^2 sensors, but only one real way to find out! If you don't pass the test then you've got xx days to get it fixed and come back again for a free re-sit (woohoo!)

With noise, what I was told was that its exactly ON or under, then you're fine. I think mine was 89db and the limit is 90db so that was fine. If its a "factory" 95db you probably want to get it checked before, as you never know what conditions and what GTR they tested it on.

You might not actually have to remove the AVC-R but anyhow, i'll PM you on that. I just disconnected the controller box from inside the cabin and the control in the engine bay.. left the piping in place to save me dicking with that feeding it back (ag). There's nothing against having an empty hose or two in the engine bay anyhow. The ECU they'll pop the kick panel so better get a stock GTR one.

I had my car back to "normal" the same night, so its no problemo.

Thanks Gordo.

Jack is helping me out with the computer, and well... I probably should get a cat ;)

Will wait and see when letter comes if I can knock the two over together.

Will PM you nearer the time...

Hope QLD is as good as it looks and more. I've had enough Vic... might head north also :D

James

I've got a stock air box & stock ecu if you need a lend of it. You'll Just need to source the filter for the box.

Are you serious the PFC is not allowed?? if so why?

ppl,

Just wondering why you have to remove the powerfc as both times i got pulled over they were looking for/asking for any other computers..etc...

also Jamezilla when do you have to go to macloed...? dont tell me its the 18th of feb...?

so far me and another sau cruiser are booked in for same day....

a few more and we could have a cruise to the epa... :headspin:

If your worried about emissions/o2 sensor, you can go to most mechanics and get that sniffer up your exhaust (after the cat install ofcourse) to have a look and see if it complies

I belive you have to be running pretty rich for it to not pass...

I know an FD RX7 that passed emissions without a cat :freak:

Seriously people, dont you think enough is enough?? Each department reminds me of the World Idol judges, everyones trying to out-do each other with their ego's. One says this, the other says that... bla bla. Once & for all, is there a way where we could perhaps confirm what is & what isn't acceptable.

Like VO5 - "it wont happen straight away, but it will happen" when you get that letter! :)

James i wouldnt stress even 1% about the EPA test. The EPA testers know cops r full of shit 90% of the time with these epa tests and that it wastes your time and their time.

:werd:

meshmesh - that is the problem, there is no definitive what IS legal everywhere, fully, every step across cops, EPA, vicroads, ADRs and god knows what other legislations are out there. The whole system needs to be overhauled from the ground up, as it stands now, its pretty illegitimate. But then again maybe the current scheme is not so bad...it could be worse trust me..

do they check engine numbers etc?

maybe u could do a secret squirrel and get someone with a stock R33 GTR thats purple and swap the number plates and rego sticker :)

I think they tried 2 on my test, and he asked me where the engine number was so i said down near the turbo, but i dont think he could see it properly coz it aint stamped that clear in the first place.

    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
    • Just wanted to say thank you for your input   my man (lead mechanic by trade) and I have done a heap of work as you can imagine just to make the hot side work with the dump pipe, stupid massive intake on turbo, trying to get the waste gate on was not fun.  I’m kinda getting to the point where I don’t know if I try and make this work and not throw all this cash and time away or do I scrap the lot and start again? the Apexi I’ve got was tuned for a few slight differences:   Tomei pon cams (mine are stock neo) Turbo smart 38mm external waste gate (mines 45mm replumbed) with stainless screamer pipe  3inch turbo back exhaust with high flow cat Sard 800cc top feed injectors Sard adjustable fuel pressure reg
    • Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.
    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
