Terreto
I'm sorry, I can't help it... 17 year old suspended kids wanting GTR's??? It's like a recipe for trouble... But anyway, since you're going to buy it anyway, I say wait and get a Skyline, Skyline=good, Silvia=bad (at least in my books). You ever considered a 33 GTS-T, still more than enough power and a newer model to boot... pentae
hi BACKUP, I drive an s13 SR20DET silvia. they are pretty rare on the road, most people will think your another one of those non turbo silvia drivers thinking they can smoke your ass. Pity for them that after a mild massage your doing low 14s huh. I love my damn car.. I wouldnt take a gtst over it any day.. though I am partial to skylines.. my GTiR gets here soon, and after that i'll be purchasing the GTR. Terreto
Well if most ppl think you're in a non-turbo Silvia and they can smoke your ass then that's a pretty bad perception to have to deal with, so then you gotta ask yourself, what do I get out of buying a Silvia? And the answer is not a lot! You don't get the respect, if it's non-turbo you don't get the performance or the looks or nothing. I mean it's okay to get you from A to B but other than that. My friend has Silvia and he's alway coping shit about it being a hairdressers car, so like why put yourself thru that, you could put up with that if you're driving some really nice looking car at least, but the Silvia ain't that. But hey, it's cheaper, so it's gotta that going for it. Kinks
I'm being completely honest here Dale, I think you should buy yourself a shitter to get from A to B. You aspire to own fast cars yet you nuke your licence even faster - what's the point? You're setting your sights bloody high, an expensive car will kill you financially - remember that the purchase price is only the start of it. I kicked off on a modified charade for at least 4 years, and then shared a pulsar SSS for a year with my sister before buying my R31. The R31 is the first car I own outright and was a cheap car to buy. Basically, I'm still at uni and I don't want to get myself into debt. When I finish in 6 months time and start earning $35k+ a year then all bets are off. When I was 17-18 I was trying to pay all running costs on the charade (including being serviced by MRT - ew!) and that was a struggle. So unless you're working full time I don't recommend shooting for anything you have to borrow money for. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would respect you more if you settled down, lived within your means and made sensible choices in life (like not doing 30km/h over the limit on your Ps). I've never met you but the impression I get is you want to run before you learn to walk, and that sort of thing can get you killed when it comes to cars. Genesis®
agreed wholeheartedly with Kinks' comment i did not get my skyline till much later... before was charade, civic, BMW, prelude then finally skyline and even so, it took me a while to actually bond with the car. but then again, you are old enough to make your own decisions... what you get in here are valuable advices... dale
yeh i understand where you are comming from, but if i got a powerful car its not really how fast i can drive it everywhere as i have learned from losin my license. i have finally learned to save my speeding for the track and not on the roads as i still have been driving recently until the suspension letter comes and i find better to cruise places as i am actually not in a hurry, then speed like a lunatic as i used to. i would still like the power to be there under my foot so that after i finish school in like 8 months and go to uni i can then be making more money and start modding whichever car i get. it will basically be my daily driver good modded car also my parents would help with the running costs as they offered to buy me a golf or somethin but I would rather get a car that im really gona respect and enjoy thats got a lot of kick. anyways keep the help comming its great!!!!!! i was unsure about the silvia as i wont have upfront money to repair it if anythin happens so wat r the engines like and are they very problematic ? Thanks all!!!! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661394 Share on other sites

What do I get out of it? Thats easy.. pulling up next to you at the lights in the hairdressers car and kicking your GTST's ass from 0-180km/hr. And around the corners, too. Its a known fact that the 180sx/sr20det sil is faster down the quarter mile, and with the modifications that my car has I enjoy beating guys who buy skylines just because they want gtr respect and looks for next to no cost. Talk down silvias all you like: the fact is I have driven many many gtst-t's and many silvias, and my personal preference is that my car is more enjoyable to drive fast. Its smaller, lighter and feels like more of a go kart, and feels faster. How many Silvia K's or 180sx's have you driven? let me guess, none? I have no respect for skyline drivers who think they are top shit because of their car unless they have a GTR badge, sorry mate. Genesis®
guys... this thread is to give the kid advice... the skyline's and silvia's power/speed/looks/cost saga has been ongoing for too long... at the end of the day, dun forget that they are BOTH from Nissan Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661414 Share on other sites
ultimatepowder
dale, mate, have u eva seen a gti golf?....if ure parents offered 2 buy u it, take them up on it...even a "pov-pak" model is still a set of wheels, and its some kinda collateral when u can eventually afford the upgrade....its like they pitch in to buy ure skyline (in the long run)...u shouldnt look a gift horse in tha mouth mate, and, sure it wont look as cool parked in tha school car park, but mate, i drove a 20 yr old vb commy 2 school, parked it every day next to all tha mercs and beemers (no offence 2 ash ), and never had to worry abt it being targeted by anyone, at least not for the crappy, jealous reason that its hotter than mummys merc, dude, get ureself a sleeper of a golf, park it safe, then upgrade as soon as you can get tha cash together. im still waiting for mine, and, as anyone on this forum will probably tell you, its well worth it. you dont want it reposessed when you have only just got it and shown your friends Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661418 Share on other sites
Kinks
Assuming you take the cheaper option and go the silvia: Can you afford to maintain it? Can you afford to insure it? Can you afford to crash it? Three very important considerations when you're 17. If you put yourself into debt buying a silvia, and then don't insure it or only get 3rd party, and run up the back of someone on a wet day when you're not paying 100% attention then you're screwed and the car will be off the road for 6 months while you repair it or off the road for good. You'll find, just like you did with your speeding episode, that if you stretch too far you'll get kicked in the teeth and end up worse off than you started. The harder you try to fight it the worse things get, just ride it out and things will come good in the end. dale
All very good points and giving me a lot to think about. Thanks for being honest and helpful and Pentae im sure Teretto didnt mean any disrespect, and his ideas came out wrong in words... anyway this aint the place to fight off silvia vs skyline so take that to wasteland if you must Kinks: I cant afford to maintain, insure, or crash it. But since my parents were offering to get me the golf, if I buy the car myself they will look after those aspects to a certain extent. Ultimatepowder: Yes i have seen the golf and i wouldnt want my parents spending so much money on a golf that I wouldnt really enjoy driving, id rather buy my own less expensive car thats actually better in most aspects. Also i dont like FWD Genesis: I know now that the car I get will be with me for a long time, during UNI etc so I want it to be the right one from the begining. i dont plan on driving it like a moron as i now prefer to cruise than to gun it like im in a rush everywhere so if i do go the silvia option it will be basically a fun modded car, where i will do a few track days and things like that until many years later when I can afford my own skyline. HOWEVER EVERYONE -------------------------- this is a twist to the entire story.... my dad recently was looking through my HPI mags, and noticed the "LEXUS" soarer Har. He likes that so I mite say listen dad, either im gona buy my first car, or ill pay half with you and get a luxury lexus soarer THAT IS A LONGSHOT AND IS MY FIRST OPTION coz then i can save money for skyline later anyways he doesnt like imports due to their speed, and me having a few tickets... so not likely. Maybe he would get the 3L non turbo and i would turn it into a cruise car until i get a conversion or somethin THAT IS MY FIRST OPTION SO NO FLAMING IT Anyways thanks for the help basically only reply to the silvia/skyline saga not the soarer. Thanks all!!! -Dale Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661461 Share on other sites
ultimatepowder
dude, soarers r very nice cars ( i nearly bought one myself)...u get so many options for so little price, but dont they only come out of tha factory auto? still, a nice option.....good luck with tha decision Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661478 Share on other sites
chaos
im curious as to why you want to buy an expensive car when u already lost your license for it to sit in your driveway and rot for 6 months while u sit in it and just start the engine and rev it a bit? why dont u save the money of 6 months therefore you can take out a cheaper loan Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/32967-silvia-now-or-skyline-later/#findComment-661865 Share on other sites
neil_se
you're dreaming if you think you can get an sr20det silvia for 6-7k. up here r32's and r33's are more like the hairdresser's cars and a lot of the s13's have some serious hardware in them. trust me, you'll have an absolute blast in either a silvia or r32. stuff what other people think, you'll have such a rush every day either way. i wouldn't recommend a loan while at uni either, you certainly won't have enough money left over for much modding. PHaT MR30
Hey well why not get the best of both worlds? Go the silvia with the skyline guts? and i wouldn't say they are a hairdressers car thats a CRX Delsol!! Silver-Arrowz
Because your going to apply for probation, don't draw attention to yourself. More likely cops may pull you over for something. Buy a gemi or something that's dirt cheap cause that way you don't draw attention and when you sell it it doesn't depreciate that much. As a gtr owner, I can honestly say that it's not cheap to run. Silvia gets my vote. Cheaper overall and still quick and nimble. Get a gtr and you'll probably lose your license again. Wait till you've had a few years experience driving then get one. It's not as easy to drive quick as everyone thinks.
