Anyone had a gearbox rebuilt locally and if so by whom, any bad experiences pm me. I am thinking of talking to southern differentials. As i have had work done there.

Car has a stuffed transfer case at the moment, and the gearbox isn't the greatest, so thinking of a rebuild or perhaps going to an r33 gtr gearbox. Also does anyone know of any rebuild kits out there?

I currently have an R33 GTR gearbox in mine. Second is a bit crunchy. I'll be rebuilding this box at some stage with the OS Giken kit and maybe a hollinger shaft. Interested in this, I haven't decided who will do this for me yet.

Yeah saw it there yesterday, Just saw somone pull up in a 4wd and trailer and saw this thread...put them together...but alas I was wrong,

As Blitzxtr prob said, Award Diff and Gearbox have runs on the board but they are a fair hike from Canberra.

yeah Terry reuilds these things in between spoonfuls of weetbix during breakfast. He did the PPG helical dog in my car and its mint. He also knows just what bits need ordering when doing OS conversions as the bits required are not always the same. This seems an issue with other shops doing OS boxes, handing the customer a notchy noisy box and telling the customer that its noisy and notchy due to the gearset. OS gearsets when installed correctly using the right list of update parts do not whine or are notchy, they shouldn't even be able to pick it from a stocker.

He also does transfer cases.

Well Ive decided I will be getting the box rebuilt at award when the parts come in, just a standard rebuild to r33 specs. In the scheme of things it's not that much more expensive than getting a 2nd hand gtr box, which is a bit of a lottery. The local places don't seem to have the experience with these boxes that Terry has.

about 1400$ in parts plus labour of taking the box out and rebuilding it.

replacing:

input shaft, 2nd synchro ring, 3rd synchro ring, 4th synchro ring, 1st/2nd selector sleeve, 3rd, 4th selector sleeve, 3rd/4th selector hub,

Energiser springs & pads for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th

  • 5 weeks later...

Well have the car back now, and overall happy. A few things though, be prepared for a few weeks without the car just incase. Due to the wrong parts being delivered twice by nissan, my job took 2 and a half weeks. Box overall feels nice and smooth, does feel a bit different to shift than other r32 boxes ive tried. I think this might be due to the hks short shifter in the car, would be interested in seeing what another box with a short shifter feels like. Finally got rid of my bearing noise as well.

p.s don't let your transfer case run out of oil lol, thats what happened to mine, i feel retarded.

Hey Chris,

You can have a drive of mine one day soon, I have a TOMEI short shifter in my RB25 box... Should be a good comparison, although my box isnt exactly new. :)

Don't necessarily have to drive it, just want to check the throw and the feel compared to mine, even just going through the gears when the car is off I can tell the feel is different to a normal shifter. Happy to let you test drive mine if you want in return.
