Another Defect Thread :(

Hey guys,

just after a little bit of advice here, now i know im going to be forced to change everything back to stock, so this thread is more of a how to.

I got defected yesterday on the Great Western Highway at Parramatta.

Randomly got pulled over by one of those nice F6 Typhoons and asked me to pop my bonnet.

They did me for.

- BoV, apparantly it is atmospheric.

How would i change it to plumb back? Do i need a whole set of new piping? or is it as simple as fitting a stock BoV (plumbed back)? Or does the location of the BoV along the piping have something to do with it aswell?

- Ride height below 100mm

They stuck some wheel below my car, the only place it failed was the exhaust pipe between the rear tyres... Told me some story about speed humps, i said to him if the car bottoms out, it doesn't happen between my rear tyres (moreso in the middle) but sitting still on the road it cleared 100mm easily so he couldnt do me for it.

- Intercooler

Not meeting standards, i know intercoolers can change your emissions, have any of you ever passed a blue slip test with an FMIC?

- POD Filter being exposed

Stupid i know, will putting it in an airbox suffice? Or is a pod filter a no-no enclosed or not?

- Exhaust

Not meeting standards, i think i may have to get a epa test (unsure)

I was issued with a Minor warning notice with no label attached. also says i have to have a Full inspection done by AUVIS.

He also issued me with 2 fines, but in the fine title, it just says "Use vehicle not comply with standards, Emissions/Silencer/noise" My question about this is, it seems vague, but i am going to go out on a limb here and say that emissions could be enforced by BoV, same as noise. But silencer?? They never even checked my exhaust system, and i didn't have the silencer switched on when they pulled me over.

The goal is to return the car to an acceptable level so it can pass AUVIS and so i can get my defect cleared, so i can sell it, unfortunately, it was great to have, but police attention is not something i want, so i will probably get a honda jazz or something lol.

Does anyone know anyone in the South West of Sydney who is AUVIS certified? Also does anyone know how much it is likely to cost me to fix the issues with this car? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

1) Atmo BOV: Most times it's easier to stick a stock BOV in there. I'd love to make up a little pipe that makes my SSQV plumb back, but it just seems harder than it's worth, so back to stock it is.'

2) Ride height is an iffy one. But good that you got clear of that; you're absolutely right re: speedbumps unless you're being full hektik sideways.

3) Not sure about FMIC, sorry :D

4) If it's enclosed then RTA will pass it, but DECC/EPA will rape it (what I've heard, not from experience... again, sorry)

5) Not meeting standards? In which way? Did he provide a reason or just went "nah i don't like the look of that"? If it's quieter than the legal limit, it should be fine... I don't know how much it affects emissions though; if you've got the stock cat on there I'd think it should be sweet.

Basically emissions can just mean noise as well; he might have just thought your car was too loud... because we all know Harley Davidson's are the quietest things on the road but they're still legal *rolls eyes*

Going through the same thing at the moment.

Ill be getting the whole car engineered when the new engine goes in. Along with a certificate from my tuner stating the engine now runs on "Biofuel" with an emissions result attached.

And going to the RTA for IM240 test.

Then going to the DECC to get the once over.

I spoke to the DECC the other day and at present the are no exemptions for vehicles running alternative fuels. He said i need all my emissions gear hooked up IE: Carbon canister, PCV etc...

I know the Co2 and other nasties will be far lower on the test and im hoping to get passed without the carbon canister and aftermarket cat in place.

I figure if the car passes emissions without all the stock gear in it then what is the issue??

Clearing defects that really drains a lot of time.

I'll be keeping my car stock :S

Just wondering, has anyone been done for a stock car?

I got told that my lexus badge was loose and falling off. *infiniti badge*

then proceeded to wonder and ask multiple times whether I owned this Lexus Skyline.

Closest ive been to defect :)

i had a defect cleared a couple of years ago. have a front mount and it passed fine. as for ride height. its not about weather it bottoms out on speed humps or not. if any part of the car ( apart from the wheels obviously) id less than 100mm to the ground its clearly a defect.

trouble is the laws are there for our safety. follow em and your fine. an yes i learnt the hard way by getting defected.

but its no reason to sell the car. i still have mine modified. i just got it engineered and i have no probs now, the cops pull me up see that i have the engineers cert and they never check anything now.

it also helps that i dont draw attention to myself by driving like a dick.

Hey mate, im mechanic by trade ill try help ya.

1) Bov will have to be returned to stock, ie. plumb back as factory, may require pipe change.

2) Intercooler will pass epa providing it is a sleeper front mount with the under pipe not the over the top one.

3) POD filter cover not good enough for the AUVIS. Must be standard air box

4) Recomend after putting stock items back on get it tuned with E10 fuel. Then you will need to retuned for premium after the

emission test is done.

5) Exhaust is ok providing it passes a db test which is i think approx. 92db@3000rpm@2meters.

6) Suspension is a touchy one. If you can find stock spring set up would be best. Coil overs are a no no.

My mates 32 pretty much got done for all of the above and thats what he had to do to pass. Any other questions just pm me.

Hey,

Just to clarify, an AUVIS inspection station is any place that does blue slips. Hope that helps.

Also some blueslip places will pass a covered pod. Its all down to the discretion of the inspector. I've had one pass in the past. Although your best bet is to fit a stock airbox.

With the ride hight.. Ie exhaust sitting to low, it will cost you but get an exhaust place to re run that section higher, if that is the only part making it lower then 100mm

as said before you just need to get it blue slipped

when your at the exhaust place get them to rite you a certificate (receipt) stating that it is x amount db, it will take them like 5 mins to test, they just have a sound meter tool

they should write you the cert if it is at thelegal limit, get this done before the blue slip so as you can show the joint where you get the blue slip done

I got done about a month ago in my wagon for exhaust (unbolted at diff and half unbolted at cat), low ride height (cut three coils out of rear springs) and pod filter (I had it in there jus cos I could and for the wank factor). But I got my blue slip done in bowral, country town so they were pritty leanient
