I havn't done a compression test yet. Ill be doing one tomm but im having oil/white smoke coming from the oil dipstick tube. So im trying to weight my options. Im either looking into buying anouther rb25det s1 short block or just do a basic rebuild.

Im wondering if I do a basic rebuild could I reuse the same bearings and just install a crank collar and new rings, freshen up the cylinders and call it a day? The engine has like 70,000 miles on it and its a weekend car...

bearings are one of the cheapest parts of and engine build so no point in reusing them.

big risk getting a 2nd hand motor unless you get warranty and have NO aftermarket parts when you try to claim.

rebuild will always cost a bit once you factor in machine work and gaskets etc.

if you can do the labour yourself with some mechanic mates you will save ALOT. make sure you offer your mates some money but.

you could buy a 2nd hand motor and you wont know the condition till you turn the key

but if its all properly machined (you could even upgrade the internals) you can garantee it runs better then before

(as mentioned, never re use used bearings/ rings/ gaskets as these parts are designed to take wear and tear so the other parts dont)
