Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying an R34 GTR. I want to know where I can get custom carbon fibre fabrication for body work. I want this project to be a street car and for track but with no stripped interior. My target for weight is 1300kg, is that possible for the R34 because it's quite heavy. By the way I'll worry about the engine mods later I really need the weight issue resolved. I need 240kg saving over stock.

How much would a whole exterior in carbon cost? I'm also going to change the seats, remove the spare, lighter wheels, suspension, brakes etc. But because you guys know the car way more than I do what do you think would be shredded. Remember I want a fully functional interior. Mine's GTR is 1300kg and I don't even think it's carbon so what's your take?

you will never hit 1300kg with a full interior. Mine's GTR isn't 1300kg. I don't know where you got that information from. anyway, dry carbon doors, hood, boot, and front wings are gonna be over 10,000 USD alone. the bumpers in dry carbon are pretty rare as there isn't much demand for them. I was quoted 4-5000 for the front one alone by Midori Seibi here in Japan. all of those combined might save you 75kg. MIGHT. then if you strip the trunk you could hit over 100kg. If you have to ask how much all of this would cost, it generally means you can't afford it.. Just being real here. Also just as a reference, Mine's sold one of their Demo cars (they had several R34s) a few years ago for about 135,000 Australian Dollars. The only carbon pieces it had were the spoiler, trunk lip, and mirrors. It also started out life as a BNR34 V-Spec N1 of which only 45 were ever produced. Good luck.

What about custom carbon fabrication as in a wrokshop takes the bumpers and doors, etc and makes molds then makes a carbon version.

you can already buy dry carbon versions of almost all of the removable pieces of the car. Why would you need anyone to make it for you? just search online and you;ll find it. the bumpers are the only thing you would have to have made. Like I said, that would be nearly 20,000 dollars in CF and you still wouldn't be near your goal. I would spend 20,000 on a R35 VR38DETT and figure out a way to make it fit.

lol, there is a lot of work involved in making a mold.. will cost you far less to buy from someone who already has them

from memory sunline racing dry carbon rear fenders, side skirts and front fenders was around $10,000 just to buy when the dollar was good. then u gota get it here and get it fitted.

and then when u crash it at the track ull be up for even more to replace the parts

i thought school holidays was over now

This is looking kind of stupid lol for me I didn't think the goal was so hard, $20k on bodywork?!! The stock car is 1540kg right? Why are they so hard to make lighter, my STi doesn't have much CF, full interior except race seats, no spare, carpets, lighter battery, lighter wheels and brakes and I got it down to 1320kg. I know the STi is a lighter car to begin with but how come the R34 is so heavy? What kind of pushed me away from getting one 2 years ago was the engine, I know this sounds stupid but the RB26 is small for a car of that weight, sure it can get high power easily but I'm talking about low end torque for street driving. They should have made it a 3.2l or 3.4l. Anyway I'm kind of having doubts about this because I'm not exactly loaded, my STi is up for sale and I've got like $45k in the bank but I don't want to spend it all on the car lol.

Well I dunno, but just to give you an idea. The MSpeed GTR is 1200kg and it looks like this

All the exterior panels are Dry Carbon, and their kit runs 50,000 dollars. You can there is absolutely nothing in the car as well. If you want to run a full interior, with windows that roll up and down (guaranteed theirs are lexan) it will never ever happen. They have 8,000 dollar shocks made out of NASA grade lightweight material, and on and on.. Anyway. if a 2.6L than can push 600+ HP all day is too small for you maybe you should get a new Corvette or something with a 7L supercharged LS9 and call it a day.

LOL I didn't mean it like that I just ment a 3.2L would've had alot more bottom end torque and daily drivability. Anyway why is 1300kg impossible with full interior on that car? Not saying I have the money for dry carbon but the interior can't be 100kg + can it?

rear seat and rear seat safety belts = 31 pound/14.1kg

front seats = 34lbs/15.4kg EACH (with rail attached) = 30.8kg

door panels = 14lbs/6.35kg

Center console = 7.6lbs/3.5kg

Stock Floor Mats = 13.0lbs/5.9kg

carpet and various plastic moldings = 16.2/7.3kg

all sound deadening = 12lbs/5.5kg

dash stripped to shell = 3lbs/1.36kg

radio and speakers = 7lbs/3.2kg

metal plate behind the back seat = 6.4 pounds/2.9kg

=81kg and I left you with air conditioning, (which would be another 15kg almost) power windows and locks, and grab handles. So yeah, 100kg is INSIDE the passenger compartment, easy.

I got info, son.

The AWD system adds some weight.. I don't see why you need to reduce the weight for a daily driven car? IE you stated that you don't need a roll cage for daily driven..

Also the GTR wasnt designed for daily driveability..

buddy

listen to me. what u wanna do is possible but u need some serious cash and u will have no interior, no ac, no comfort at all, u wont be able to drive it on the street either.

ill break it down for u coz ive gone thru this before and only went half way.

ill list u things u will need and rough prices

carbon bonnet - sunline racing was the lightest i found and come in 3 different forms,

stage one was - 3000 carbon with plastic fibres

stage 2 was - 4000 carbon with carbon fibres

stage 3 was 5000 carbon with kevlar fibres

all different weights the more u spend the lighter it gets.

top secret carbon trunk - around 1400 there are other brands starting at around 650 but they were still heavier and usually a fiberglass with carbon overlay.

carbon doors - there were many to choose from starting at around 2000 for the shitty seibon ones which they say are bolt on no problems but believe me there is alot of f**kiong around the best ones i found were from sunline also but u r looking at 3000-4000

sunline racing carbon door trims - these r probably the nicest ones u will find imo they still retain all the electrics in the door. i have these in my car and i f**king love them 1500-2000 depending on who u get to bring them in for u

carbon front guards - these replace the heavy metal guards factory cars have, i only found 2 options and that was to either buy after market z tune guards from mu secret for around 1200 or buy genuin z tune guards from nissan and u can imagine the price they would have

then little things like

mirrors -

side skirts

tail light coverings

these are little things but u can still change all of them to carbon fibre if u really want

then move to the interior

carbon fibre dash - 5000+

carbon backed seats ie sparco or brise 3000+

so far u are up to 18000-30000 depending on the brand u get.

then get lighter rims enkei and te37sl are the lightest i can think of now 3000+

dude seriously im not writin any more unless ur super rich u arent doing this. if the 26 is not "big" enugff for u, u can stroke it about a billion different ways.

have a nice day do keep us up to date with what u end up doing

cheers

julz

Good to see people aiming high... although

You've got 2 chances of getting it done for your budget

1- None

2- None

I think Julz has summed it up. Any quality 100% C/F parts are super expensive

Correction

There is 3 chances

1 & 2 as above

3 - Build all the carbon parts yourself..

RB26 was designed to meet the class restrictions of the day for Group A, otherwise they would have been a larger engine for sure. Thus the VR38 in the new GTR.

Based on your available budget if you were to blow it all on the car you could afford to put together something pretty reasonable but it wont be full of carbon fibre. Call it $50-55k for the base car, 20 for the engine and driveline and the rest on suspension modifications to conquer the understeer and of course tyres. 90-100K easy.

Keep in mind a set of semi slicks are pretty easy to burn through. Ive shreadded a set of new RT615's to 50% life after doing just one sprint event in my R34. 6 events a year, $2400/set of tyres... you do the math.

You can easily blow $50k on an engine if you were to head down the osgiken 3+lt stroker path. The RB30 bottom end would be the more affordable option, as per the highoctane r34 gtr.

Safety for carbon? How would they know it's going to be painted. Anyway this is really looking bad. Why is the R34 so heavy anyway anyone know?

There is no way you could posibly keep a radically lightened car legal on the street. Carbon doors provide no side impact protection and definatly wouldnt be legal. Lexan glass is only legal for windows behind the B-pillar. To be honest a true thoroughbred race car is an utter bitch to drive on the street anyway and no car that is good on the street will ever be exceptional on the track. Race cars are noisy and harsh.

About your weight question, the standard R34 GTR driveline will survive 600awkw of punishment if it is a linear applied load (not shock loading) for a limited period of time. 450awkw, not a problem with reliability provided everything is in good condition and well maintained. They are a lot more over-engineered than an STI.

just for clarification, you can't actually BUY the CFRP Nismo Z-Tune guards. They were for the real Z-Tunes only. The Nismo ones available are fibgreglass.

Unless you have a Nismo Z-Tune and have a Japanese registration :) . They are very strict here. I had to show my registration just to order a starter motor. I know for a fact however that the manufacturers here keep NOS items on hand to fill rare orders. I've seen a set of NSX Type-R wheels from the first gen NA1 brand new in the box. Blew my mind, especially after I saw that they only cost 1 gold bar. Bottom line is that the OP's dream car here will never be built, but I invite him to prove me wrong all day. I'd love to see ANOTHER all carbon R34 GTR. Yes.. already been done to the tune of 100,000s of dollars.

Weighs 1090kg cost them 309,000 dollars to build this car.
