Hey guys... has anyone experienced this b4?

It seems like since this afternoon, everytime when I start my car and engages it into 1st gear for the first time, after the car goes for awhile, there's this little cranking noise coming from the front.

There's no power loss and no other issue in terms of performance and it never happens again after that until I off the car and restart it. I haven't tried switching off the engine and immediately restart so not sure if it only happens on a cold engine.

Anyone has this issue before? My car comes with a complimentary pre-inspection report from the AA which will be done on Tuesday so I'll get the inspector to have a look and see if he can identify the issue as if there's something wrong, the dealer will need to sort it out.

Really hope it's not a big issue as apart from this, the car is going real smoothly and I am really enjoying it everytime I drive it!

Hmmm dunno mate. Let us know how the inspection goes!

I would say its sounds like the bendix gear on the starter motor isn't fully disengaging

and clipping the first tooth on the flywheel

and if its more the gearbox do a fluid change on the box with a top quality fluid

From what I heard, it's the ABS doing a self diagnostic when you go over 20km/h from a cold start and completely normal.

Sound is like a grinding noise and worried me before i found that out.

Hey Peter, sounds exactly like what you describe mate! And yes, the noise came around the 20km/h mark. Another of my worries solved by you excellent people here! Thanks man! Honestly, if you didn't tell me, it does sounds a little scary and hence quite worrying for me... so really appreciate the update!

Chris, thanks for your update too! This may be a real dumb question but as someone who has limited knowledge on cars, where is the transmission fluid tank located? Is it the same as the power steering fluid tank? Thanks!

Are you guys driving an automatic or a manual?

I'm driving an 04 semi-auto, I get that exact same sound too. Glad to hear it's normal!

Hey Siglapian,

Yes, mine is a Nov 04 semi-auto as well, so i guess it's something that is normal for all of us! And yes, I am glad to hear it's normal too! :(

It is normal mate, more noticeable in a cold start. My car does that too and at first i thought it was something wrong then I read the manual and it says something like a self check thing on start up.

Thanks Alvin for the update! That's just great! Seems like I was not the only one that got worried when I first hear the noise then! :) Well, that's another reason why i just love this forum! The knowledge sharing availability here is just fabulous!

I have an 02 GT8 and it has always done it but never really chased down an answer as I had that theory, if you just rest your foot on the brake pedal you can feel it pulsating in conjunction with the noise.

Mine will also do it when hot and I have just come out of the shops.

Hmm, I've noticed sometimes when I use the brakes for the first time after starting the car it almost feels like the ABS being activated?

I'll have to pay more attention and see if it is the same as what you guys are describing here.

Hi Guys

Im just new to the forum and this is my first post. Getting used to replying etc.

I have an 08 Skyline 370GT S 6 speed manual and i get the same thing. When its cold theres almost like a cluncking noise coming out of the gear box, nothing serious or loud, no loss of power etc and when i picked it up she only had under 8k. I've looked into it and its normal for these boxes to be a bit louder, even when im changing gears from 1st to 2nd its a bit cluncky. Maybe i should take a 370z for a drive and see if its the same.

Does anyone else have a v36 here? if so let me know so we can chat further.

Cheers

    • Absolutely this. Yes, except not vacuum hose. Something oil/fuel safe is a better idea.
    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
