Hey people,

Iv found that after changing all 4 rotors and pads i now have that wheel balance shudder through the steering wheel at 100kmh+.

Prior to the new rotors i didnt have this problem and have brand new rims and tyres.

I have had a 4 wheel alignment done but that didnt make any difference.

Any suggestions what it might be? Iv checked and it doesnt look like iv knocked off a balance weight doing the rotor change.

Perhaps incorrectly balanced rotors? (RDA's)

cheers

Justin

rust where the disc meets the hub can cause this,

also some aftermarket wheels require hub centric rings as they dont match the hub of the car.

did you rotate the wheels?

have you got the wheels rebalanced / checked on a balancer

cheers people,

ill start with the rust on the hubs. its a possibility. Ill make sure all the balance weights are there and sitting right too.

yeah iv got the hub centric rings (spigots).

wheels and tyres are brand now so dont need rotating. And were on the car for 2000km before doing the rotors and there was zero shudder then.

rotors shouldnt need machining as they are brand new yeah?

n the supplier said that they are balanced before being sold...

Hopefully is the rust/dirt on the hubs as i sooo dont want to have to go down the route of claiming faulty rotors and proving it and then wating with the car on blocks for however long it takes to get replacements...

thats why you buy brand new to avoid this shit yeah? :s

Clean all the rust off the face of the wheel hub. Every last but of it. Also get a straight edge and check for any high spots. File these off.

Get yourself a dial indiactor and stand and measure the runout on the hub alone and the rotor and hub as one. If brand new rotors aren't under 0.002mm of runout then I wouldn't be satisfied.

OK will see if i can check that too.

A further point to mention is that the brakes work fine. No shudder under braking like if a disc was warped. Which would also mean that it is unlikely to be somethin on the hub surface as this would also misalign the rotors rotation and forcing a shudder under braking too?

Or would a slight bit of rust/dirt be enough to cause balance shudder at high speeds but not enough to cause a shudder under braking?

i have seen rust causing wheel shudder and brake shudder.

but i see your point on no brake shudder,

i think you should just get the wheels onto a balncer for $35 it will tell you whether your problem is that or the brakes.

takes the guess work out of it.

and while the wheels are getting balnced pull the brakes off and clean the rust.

WIN WIN

I like the way you think Jez.

I think that is the best place to start.

    • In all the track days I've done over the past few months I've only had 1 issue with braking and thats with my current EBC pads (can't remember the colour, but they're not a track pad). I don't *think* I have had issues with brake fluid getting too hot, my understanding is that when that happens you will have quite noticeable brake loss - which I haven't had.  I'm using just regular ol' Penrite Super DOT4 fluid. I use this fluid in everything and my cars always seem to stop so I see no reason to change, except ... for the 335i. I need to do a fluid flush and was thinking about my fluid of choice and wondering if I should consider using something more high temp? Its not a super fast car by any standards but I'd hate to do a flush and then find myself with no brakes when I get. to Wakefield.  I guess, my question can be summed up as "How fast do you need to be driving to need higher temp brake fluid?"  I remember high temp fluid was considered a must have back in the day when I had my GTR.
    • For anyone that comes here looking for answers on what can go wrong with gts-4 to rb25detneo swap. The Gloria's awd sump is different and does not fit. The rb25neo from stagea are exactly the same sump bolt pattern and axel alignment. Castings numbers are different on Gloria's blocks and oilpans if they need to be identified.
    • I have information on this for anyone that comes looking again. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18gsbFaYTU/ The rb25det neo from the stagea has the same sumo as rb26 and r32 gts4 (and other awd models). The sump that has caused so many problems during swaps are from the awd neo Gloria's. The casting numbers on the block and oil pans are different so this may help identify if you can't confirm where the motor came from
    • Not feasible to fix the boot lid you had? Damage looked minor/hard to even see :p Source: Drove into something recently and you should be happy you didn't!
    • Another new used boot arrived at the painters, it was sent back as there was nearly as much damage as the original one I want to replace  Finding a clean used boot lid is proving problematic, and I'm not keen on dropping $1500 on a new one from Mazda Sigh....
