What's a good first car?

I had a AE86 as my first car......and I regret selling it. But the skyline wasn't a bad replacement I guess. Anyway, they are awesome cars to learn how to drive in and attempt to DRIFT in if you must.

AE86 benefits:

Bulletproof reliability

Dirt cheap (5K will get you a decent one)

RWD - lots of fun to be had there

Good Power to Weight ratio (925kg)

The parts are readily available (engine parts that is, definately not panels etc)

Easy to work on

Plenty of info on the net to guide you through

Just big enough to entertain the ladies in (slight defect there i guess)

Not bad looking car for it's age

Umm that's all I got......

My biased 2cents worth.

P.S. P plater drifting is cool until you drift into a tree.

for a perth junkie like myself, and want_anR32, id recommend not going a skyline for your first car, i learned that lesson a while back, not only does your insurance jump thru the roof, but cops pick on u all the time, take it from me mate, dont get a skyline YET, wait till your off your p's (lucky im getting off mine in june) and that way cops dont pick on u as much, i drove a laser for 3 years, (during my training and as my own car) and my parents are getting me a skyline after my 20th birthday, because as a pilot i have to develop maturity, and as a p plater i showed no maturity when driving.

yeah sure i know u want to drive "fully syk" cars on your p's but mate the attention u get from it is really really really bad, not only from cops, but from the news and all that other bullcrap

Unless you have very wealthy parents, or you deal crack, there is no way you'll be able to afford to run a car like a Skyline. Petrol, tax, parts, servicing and maintenance, INSURANCE. It all adds up.

Owning a Skyline as your first car would cripple you financially. Hell, if i was working full time right now i couldn't afford to run a Skyline in the UK.

As for wanting a 'good drifting car'....... grow up. You'll kill somebody. Idiots like you all over the world put MY insurance higher. It's idiots like you that bend your cars around trees trying to impress your mates, or the young girls you're trying to pull.

Get a cheap and cheerful car that will cost you f*ck all to run whilst you A) learn to drive a lot better, safer and more responsibly... and B) until your insurance goes down, you get some NCB under your belt and you have enough money to run a powerful car.

Don't mean to be harsh on you but you need to think realisticaly.

Well as for getting sideways, I was referring to something which had a bit of weekend track ability if he wanted to. Street drifting is bloody stupid. So I dont see any reason to tell the guy to "grow up"... in fact taking my car to the track on weekends is what taught me alot about my car and in particular how to handle it in tricky situations.

I think your post was a little too harsh, with little thought, no offense man but I can see where he's coming from so let's all stop pretending we drive like grandma's on the road and that our tyres never ever break traction and that we're complete angels! we all know that that's just BS!

all we can do is try and control ourselves and set an example for people like this person and instead of flaming them for asking a PERFECTLY REASONABLE question, support them and encourage them to be better than those other dickhead p platers out there.....

NOTE: I am a P-PLATER and I DON'T drive like an angel, my skyline does do a squeel off the lights every blue moon... p-platers arn't all the same, so stop labelling young drivers....

Yeah, true.... had mine since june and have sat infront of, behind, next to cops and not so much as a glare yet.... it's the driver really not the car....

Me and my mates found if you drove with your hat on backwards they'll target you.... never wear hats though so i'm safe....

Maybe you're right. But it all depends on how cheap you consider cheap to be. At the end of the day the cars that have been mentioned are all around 2.0l some of which with turbos. Fuel economy, road tax, insurance is all going to be much higher. I'm just thinking about they guy financially.

Forgive me for being sceptical about his intentions, it's just that 3 people in my year group alone when i was in school were killed in separate road traffic accidents. I don't really care if some dumb kid kills himself in an overpowered car, but its when bad drivers kill other people.

you have what is called a "provisional" liscence in NSW and maybee other states (p = provisional)... you go from a learners permit to "p-plates" to a full liscence (basically)....

Every one wants a GTR, but that doesn't mean he is going to buy one for his first car.... but yeah, i can understand where you're coming from....

They have great build quality, last forever, can take a pounding, have an lsd (sillhouette model), and even tho they may not handle like a dream, u fix that with some suspension, and then go and tow a boat or a trailer and carry 5 people if u need to. Also cops really don't pick on them, well as far as my experience goes.

i got a skyline as my first car. its where all my money goes. i cant go out or anything ive had it for 7 months and its cost me about $6000 just to repair broken stuff. so i agree. tho im learnin the hard way. and the lack of driving experience causes bad bad things when you get sideways. try a few parked cars on for size. not that i was trying to drift but if i had experience i would have been able to avoid said parked car

No i don't agree. I've got 3 years driving experience under my belt - about 25,000 miles worth. I haven't had a single accident but i do drive fast - mainly when i'm on motorways. That experience you might just shrug away, but it really does mean something going from 17 to 20 years old.

I think you are mistaking 'tall poppy syndrome' for good old common sense in this case. Just look at the replies from other Skyline drivers in this thread - SinisteR32 for example. He has agreed that all his money goes on his car, he has had to learn the hard way about driving a powerful car.

Basicaly, everybody has a short spell when they go 'mad' in their first car and they'll test it to see what it can do, how well it really corners, how fast it can go.... and you don't want to be doing any of that in a high performance car. Skyline or not, if you lose your back and have next to no experience you'll be in trouble.

I hate it when people mention 'tall poppy' syndrome. Most of us are just trying to offer helpful advice; unfortunately sometimes people respond a little too harshly.

Really, go the AE86. Quick, but not too quick. Great handling (though don't take that as 'invincible'). Cheap, reliable and runs on standard Unleaded (not RON98 = $$$), as well as having reasonable insurance rates. And it's not a target for thieves (for the most part).

Use the money you save to put towards some nice wheels and race buckets -- you can always transfer them to your next car after you're done with the AE86

Since when is an ae86 cheap, i looked at ones being imported and they were about 10k or more!!!

Doesnt look like a cheap car to me.

The rarity and cult following of these cars in japan means high prices and many drifted and dinged examples around.

Go the mx5 or r31 then save $$ and drop an rb25 in it.
