Matte Black 34

So i decided i was going to try something a little different, as the title states, Matte Black

Not much to tell really, i've been spending my hours after work for the last few weeks, progressively wrapping my 34 in Matte black vinyl.

Im using an Avery 900 series for anyone interested.

Its been a long process so far, and a steep learning curve as i work with vinyl on a daily basis, but haven't ever attempted wrapping anything on this scale.

Been trying to keep taking photos as i go.

and a little customizing

will update as the last pieces go together, will also be doing inside the door frames, most of the section around the boot when its opened, and even fuel filler.

How big does the vinyl come in? How much did it cost you? Is it easy to work with (compare to the DI NOC)? Did you have to take the panels off?

It's supposed to have a 10 year guarantee in Australian conditions, i need to speak to a rep about a few other things concerning it, but ill be sure to confirm a temperature range, my 34, sadly lives outdoors, so ill be able to provide accurate accounts on how it deals with the ups and downs in the weather conditions.

This particular vinyl comes in 610mm and 1220mm wide rolls,

There are a few other brands i wouldn't mind trying down the track on other cars, but decided to start with this one as i know of a reputable company using it regularly with great results.

It is wonderful to work with, it stretches a lot, and reacts with heat really well, (heat is your bestfriend when wrapping with this)

Much thinner than DI-NOC and wayy stretchier, i havent removed any panels, i have removed the mirrors to wrap them. the fuel filler cap also came off, the front bar will be getting started on the car, and ill decide if ill be taking it off as i go, i did drop the rear bar to wrap in the rear quarters and the tail lights were also removed completely from the housings.

I just spent the whole weekend painting mine, what a PITA job it was. Happy with the results though.

Ah nice! Did you have to join the roof and rear quarter panels? How much does the vinyl cost?

Going black wheels, when the coin is available, id love to pick up a nice set of jap rims, but don't think ill be able to afford them anytime soon, i know there is a shit load of debate about Rota rims, and i don't want this thread to turn into a shit slinging match but ive considered some Rota GTR's in matte black with the red lip.

No worries, ask away, I have a join that runs along the top of the windows and one that runs along the crease on the top of the roof. not very visible from a distance of a few meters, which is good

well how much is a paint job worth? 4k? the wraps can be quite expensive, as the labour that goes into it is quite extensive, personally, ive spent probably around 24hrs at least, and if the paint isn't in good condition, expect to spend a lot more cleaning it to get it ready for the wrap.

I understand people can spend up to 6k on a wrap, but im sure that it varies a lot depending on the condition of the paint and the work required to apply the vinyl cleanly

Ive gone and clay barred almost every panel to remove surface contaminants as even small bumps or specs of dirt show through when the vinyl is smoothed over.

a black, or dark car would be easier to wrap matte black as you wouldn't have to worry so much about inside the door frames, i think i've chosen the worst color to wrap, being white, means that anything i haven't wrap that is in view will stand out lol

Are you doing the door jams as well, they would be the areas I would most dread doing, so many curves....

For anyone considering doing it, it would be the labout that would make it an expensive option, if you can install yourself go for it, but it is alot harder than covering small to medium pieces....

I havnt seen the car wrap vinyl with the air release system in colours other than white as yet, I was hoping to see chrome so that printing on the chrome would become basically a anodized look... Anyone seen any materials like that around yet?

I can think of some great designs for that type of material...

yeah i finish at 4, and yeah ive noticed it getting a lot more stares now, and i dont think its because its a skyline.

You're spot on, it does mark/scratch easily, and gets dirty 100 times faster than a typical paint job, that said, its also easier to clean, a wet rag wipes away almost an crap that gets onto it.

My car sadly lives outdoors, so ill be able to update often with how the weather affects the finish, i am interested to see what the sun will do to it

Yes i do plan to do the door jams, and around the bootlid section where it closes and the fuel filler section.

I don't believe anyone has done single color vinyl in a quick release/rapid air (air release) style until now, our rep contacted me today at work and said there is a new vinyl they are looking at getting, used for wrapping and with the quick release backing, so she's going to get me a sample at some point.

That said, we print on quick release all the time which is used for wrapping (although this isn't a colored vinyl its just a white print vinyl)

If you want an anodized look, try laminating chrome vinyl with a satin finish laminate, i've done this myself, doesn't look too bad.

I don't want any white to be visible from the outside, i have been considering using gloss black over the top for accents or some sort of design to go with it, but im yet to decide what exactly it will be.
