reprogrammed ECU - how can you tell ??

Hey Guys..

Just wondering - if you purchased a car and the guy said that the ECU had been re-programmed (R33, Series I) to take the current mods into consideration, how could you tell ??

Are there any tell-tale signs to look for ??

Open the ECU. The R33 ECU is not programmable by default as there is nothing reprogrammable on the board.

If it has been reprogrammed a surface mount chip must be converted to socketed and then new chip installled. This will be blatently obvious once the device is opened.

If it looks relativly untouched then the ECU is stock.

Usally they have a sticker or something on it . some i have seen have a daughter board on the outside and some have extra chips etc in the inside of the ecu

First! before you open it..

Check to see if the seals are broken. The ECU will have seals on it from nissan. If its chipped it will have a broken seal, then normally a sticker or marking or both indicating its been chipped.

Sorry for being ignorant but where can I find it? I was told that my stock '93 R33 would not go past 180 kph by the previous owner, needless to say I have proved him wrong, always on a flat paved PRIVATE road, never on public roads, I like my car and my licence!

So where can I find this ECU?

Yeah the 180 speed cut sometimes does not work.. weird

ECU is on the left hand side of the car, passenger foot well, on the left. Under the plastic kick panel
