Hi all, havnt been on here in a while since i sold my 32 bit before christmas, i miss it dearly now lol

Just want some clarification on SA police not being able to defect a car that is registered in another state?

Basically a friend and i have been told by numerous people that if you buy a car from a nother sate, e.g NSW, and you keep the registration in that state you cant be defected by SA police if you bring it down here...something to do with SA police being out of their juristiction as the car is under NSW law??

The reason i'm asking this is because "i know someone" who wants to get back into an import but really don't want the hassle from police and being defected and figured may as well do this as "their" family have property in NSW so "they" could register it there and bring it down here :/:)

Any help/advice is appreciated

Cheers

Vinnie

if the car is not deemed roadworthy, it can be defected within SA regardless of the state it is rego'd in.... same goes for cars with SA plates in other states.

that being said, the 5-0 probably would be a bit more forgiving seeing a NSW rego'd car doing hook turns in SA :/

why doesnt he just find a stock R32 or R33 and keep it that way?

cops will find it harder to defect a stock car.

But then we will lose our "hoon' image. And we wouldn't want that now..would we.

I heard that if an SA car gets a defect in Vic, basically, as soon as you pass back into SA, just rip the sticker off..however, it is still defected in Vic if you go there. I got told that before heading over to vic with some friends last year.

As someone who drove their R34 for about 9 months on NSW rego cos I was too slack to get it transferred over, I can assure you I got pulled over about on about a monthly basis for a 'license check' and at RBT checks where they close off the road, I'd have to give reasons why I was driving a NSW rego car around...

Since transferring to SA rego, I have only been pulled over once in nearly 3 years since (though I did get defected ...)

ahh k so it is possible to get defected then i guess..maybe just not as likely?? Unless you have straight pipes, 20" rims and a trubo sticking out of you bonnet lol

Also not looking at getting into another skyline, although i'd love to the po-po have ruined it for me really by targetting them so much.. so thinking of getting into an evo 7..seeing as they sorta just look like a lancer lol :woot:

Thanks for your responses and many more are welcome too :)

I heard that if an SA car gets a defect in Vic, basically, as soon as you pass back into SA, just rip the sticker off..however, it is still defected in Vic if you go there. I got told that before heading over to vic with some friends last year.

my SA registered car got defected in Vic when i was on my way through to NSW a few years back.

I asked why an SA car could be defected in Victoria (mistake #1) when i was relocating to NSW to live. I was told by the police that they certainly could defect me and that the defect could get cleared in Victoria, NSW or SA regardless.

I rang Transport SA when i got to Sydney and was told that the defect was valid and on the SA computer system. I later cleared the defect when i returned the car to SA and all the defects were on the system at Regency (and then some, but that's another story best told with beer).

the bottom line is that if you get a defect notice interstate, the information will be transmitted back to SA so it will be valid - that's the benefit of a computerised system, i suppose. so if you have a NSW registered car here that receives an SA defect notice, then i presume that you would have to get that defect somehow cleared here or back in NSW - however, i don't know the answer to that one.

Its possible, but cops dont like the paperwork that goes with it so they usually dont stop interstate drivers.

i think that it was worse having an SA car in Victoria - it wasn't a pleasant experience...

if you do this,

you will have to prove that the alternate address is infact your place of residence

otherwise you are to transfer your details to the place of residence in (i think) 3 months.

if shit does hit the fan you can be put through the ringer as you failed to update your rego details and failed to transfer your license details, your records like electricity bills, rates, expiation notices, and voting details can be used against you.

or if you have a prang and the resident at that address claims it is their car, then you must be on the insurance details as a nominated driver or your insurance company might not cover you

why? just so you can have a bov...

its a big house of cards you are building to avoid defect, it only takes one card to see it all collapse.

better to avoid reasons for defect in the first place which i am sure you understand already.

i never transferred my license or rego details for 2 years in qld on an sa license ^^^ hence why i know about the above - i used the excuse that "i have only just moved here" but i'm lucky i was only pulled over twice by different cops b4 moving back.

    • As an ex-skyline owner Going off how these things are now "modern classics", I would keep the twins and just "refresh" bits that are required for reliable power and have a car you can take out for a cruise whenever you get the itch As a idiot who cannot leave things alone Going deep into the "rabbit hole" is a easy thing to do, as previously mentioned, once you start it becomes a slippery slope, wirh lots of supporting mods, and possibly rebuilds, and unless you have a bottomless pit of funds, the car can spend most of its life sitting in the garage,  broken, waiting for parts, or building more funds For a classic like a R32 GTR Basically, a reliable OEM+ refresh, that isn't a broken garage queen, is alot better than a car that you build, then break, then fix, then break again And it isn't just the engine you need to worry about, these beasties are getting on in age, and all parts are getting, and have got, expensive, the days of picking up cheap replacement engines and other driveline parts are well and truly over The funds not spent on going a single with quality parts, and with all the other other bits required to make it happen, could be spent on refreshing alot of other parts A wise man once said "If you cannot afford 2 GTR's, you cannot afford 1", I also believe he said this about 20 years ago when you could pick up a clean R32 GTR up for around $20k My advice for a R32 GTR (the one and only true Godzilla in my mind) is to think holistically about the whole car, the body, the power train, the suspension, the brakes, and the driveline SAU is a wealth of knowledge with decades of Skyline experience,  from stock, to OEM+, to modified to varying degrees, to full on or weekend or dedicated racecars, as well as full on money pits that rarely leave their garage Treat the old girl nice and give her what she deserves, you are a lucky man to own such a classic car
    • For that price you could buy the hypergear turbo (big fan as I run one) and the Haltech ECU..
    • +1 for the Elite 2500. Get some new knock sensors while you are at it (pretty cheap), look up the TAARKS Nissan knock sensor kit. You may also want to get new coils (R35gtr) while your at it (assuming your on stock ones), as they are a liability. Mine started right up and idled fine on the base map. Also go MAP over MAF, as said above, Haltech make this super simple right out the box. Another fanboy of DBW here, Outsider Garage from your neck of the woods make some nice conversion gear for the R33 (that’s where I got some of my gear from).
