Ok... Sorry not at all good with cars, only new to the skyline side of things

I recently bought a 1998 GT-T R34 skyline. The engine light came on last weekend but there was no problem whatsoever with the way the car drove. My stepdad (previous mechanic) said not to worry about it so I didn't.

It has now started making a funny noise from the exhaust, which I believe is stock, and makes a funny movement which I can best describe as what a car does when your running out of petrol. It only does this when I am stopped or when I am taking off, after about two three minutes it's fine. I have been told it could be cold, spark plugs, or a crack in the exhaust. Sorry it's vague, I'm not good at describing problems...

Anyone have ideas?

Engine check light comes on generally when there's a faulty reading from a sensor (of which there are far too many to list.) And no, you shouldn't ignore an engine check light. Take it to an actual mechanic, they'll hook a diagnostic tool up to the car and it'll list any recent errors the car has logged.

What you're describing sounds like misfiring possibly? Coilpacks die on cars of this age, that's something you should get the mechanic to check at the same time.

my old r34 had the same issue and it was coilpacks so get them checked. im not saying that im 100% sure its happening with yours so id get them checked before paying a few hundred dollars.
