Hey guys,

I have recently converted my R34 GT to a GTT, so basically swapped everything over including engine, gearbox, etc. I had to get a brand new clutch to suit the pull type of the R34 gearbox so I bought a Exedy organic racing clutch.

Now I notice when in neutral and I take my foot off the clutch I can hear a whirring/grinding sort of noise coming from the gearbox/clutch sort of area. Goes away when I put the clutch back in. What could this be? I thought it may be the clutch bearing, but the clutch is brand new?

Thanks for any help,

Martin.

will be input shaft bearing, very common. All my gearboxes have done it after a couple of clutch dumps, i have never broken a gearbox due to the input shaft bearing being noisy, so its an annoying noise but not a problem

throw out bearing is only in contact and spinning when the clutch pedal is pressed, doing this stops the input shaft spinning so the noise goes away.

So it's not a problem then?

What about this: Sometimes when I don't take off nicely (still getting used to clutch so can't drive it very well yet), so would be riding the clutch a little bit, the clutch sounds like it is knocking against something. Very very audible. I had assumed this was normal being a racing clutch as the clutch would just want to bite on and go, but I have been told that it's definitely not normal? Happens when I'm reversing lots as I don't like to take my foot all the way off the clutch...

thats a weird one, is the noise from the clutch area or back of the car?

never heard of an exedy clutch having problems. but you never know

without hearing the noise in person its a guessing game. so take it to your mechanic or a gearbox specialist and get them to diagnose it.

Did you get the engine and gearbox package from a wreckers? or privately? did it come with warranty?

my exedy cushioned button shuddered a bit on takeoff sometimes, it sounds a bit like quick repetative knocking. Im not sure what the race clutches are like but

Best thing to do if you can is to get a video of it and post it up, so we can all hear whats going on :ermm:

I'm in the hills mate, in between Midland and Mundaring. Bit far from Bunbury :ermm:

I'll get a clip of the clutch a bit later today. I think the sound is coming from the gearbox/clutch area, but sometimes there is a knocking coming from further back in the car as well. I bought a full R34 GTT donor car from KYP, they did the conversion as well. Will take it back to them on Monday. There is also a shudder/vibration at the friction point of when you take the clutch out, but KYP said that may be because it's a racing clutch and it has started to go away as the clutch has worn in. But I really hope they haven't f**ked something up in there, I can't afford a new clutch :P

my friends s15 made the same noise when he has his new organic clutch put in, we took it back to roy at kensai and he told us its because we were not releasing the clutch properly and riding it.

might be different for you but his doesnt make a sound anymore even when i drive it lol

Sounds like the same story as me ^ I've done about 600kms on the clutch now, it hardly ever does it anymore. Wasn't sure if that's because I've gotten used to it and learned how to drive it or if it had stopped doing it ;)

    • I would again like too thank Matt for his help in me sourcing the detachable hard top for the little red car, without Matt's assistance in inspecting it and locking it down, I can guarantee it would have sold before I could get up to see it,  and as that was the only available NC hardtop in Australia, I consider myself extremely lucky on multiple levels To say I'm more that happy would be an understatement And, it is 100% water tight, I drove through torrential rain coming back south, and by torrential, they type of rain that doing 40kph in a 110kph zone was a real thing, and even then, the standing water on the Hwy was deep enough to throw waves I'm also more than happy that the huge "BEASTS" that Matt calls dogs didn't eat me for lunch, I'm sure the sniffs and licks were more to "taste test" me, over being to friendly Now to work out what colour to get it painted, panel match, or gloss black........first world problems are real
    • Actually I might have figured out. Looks like there is a tab according to google images but it's hidden. Silly me.
    • No clips on this one like the other connector. Only that red tab that I can push slightly up.
    • For any loom connector that has an obvious release that resists pushing far enough to unclip, just spray some silicone lube into it. You might also benefit from using a bent screwdriver or small pick to push in the right place at the right angle.
