How Stiff Should A Wastegate Actuator Be?

Hi all,

Went to a wreckers to get a second hand turbo for a mates skyline.

The turbo appears to be in good condition but i cant push the wastegate actuator shaft open by hand. As in I cant force the wastegate open by pulling the actuator shaft from the lever to the actual actuator.

Is this normal or does it sound stuffed? Just didnt want to pay premium money for a screwed one.

it is supposed to be quite stiff, though you should be able to open a stock one by hand if you push hard enough.

i tried to open my wastegates when i bought my new turbo's. i couldn't , they turned out being 14psi ones because the turbo's were -5's.

i probably could've done it somehow but i didnt want to break anything trying to pry them open just to see because they were brand new.

but they've turned out to be fine.

R33/34 are fairly soft, R32 is stiff. Not sure about gtr ones.

oh dear god

you wont pulleither open easily a rb25det one you will have to put all your strenth to pull it straight out using both arms

a rb20det one you will have to jam half your hand against the can and half to kind of force it out .

put a bike pump on it with a gauge and youll be surprised how easy it moves at small psi

depends on the spring, i have a 5psi spring and i can only just push it open with the arm (stock turbo/actuator)

If you have disconnected the actuator from the gate itself, the gate should just flop all over the place. Sounds like your new one has a seized gate.

its all connected to the turbo and it is an R32 (10psi) one. So I shouldnt be able to operate the mechanism by hand from the sounds of it?

Certainly seems still just watn to make sure thats normal

i can move my 19psi actuator by hand so if you cant move a stocker then you either need to eat more weet bix or its rooted. as said put some pressure into it and see what it does
