ok i want to high flow my factory turbo,upgrade injectors fuel pump and AFM, target power is 250rwkw, i have a powerfc, nice big trust front mount so thwe rest of the car should be sweet for it, but is 250rwkw an honest goal ? or is something around 220-230 more probable ? and what work on the turbo needs to be done to reach the best power ? and anyone know approximate costs ?

I bought my car with a high flow (apparently), i havent checked yet, in the next month i should b doing: Microtech, injectors and pump, im hoping for around the 250 rwkw mark also, but well see what happens! Ill let ya know how i go!

It depends on the costs really as whether the highflow is worth it..if you sell your old turbo for $500 and pick up a HKS something or other or Garrett for $2k probably better option is to just go for a different turbo.

250 is realistic with a highflow on an RB25 provided it's a good highflow (they aren't all created equal)

Or as predator said a bolt up garrett/hks. For around 2k you can get a new garrett or a second hand hks (GT2540 atleast for 250 is my guess).

ok, well i was thinking if i go a bigger garett or similar will i experience more lag etc ? but was thinking if i go the highflow ill have the same spool time etc ? or is this not true ? i just want a RESPONSIVE 250rwkw, dont think ill want to go any higher in power so i dont mind getting a turbo that will be good for only a bit more than 250rwkw but would respond better than say a 3037S

I don't think you'll reach it with a 2530 but even with say 230kW, it may be just as street driveable.

I have yet to see any reports of the 2540 but it does not bring with it a good reputation.

.. in answer: why would you go the highflow ben? costs almost the same as an off the shelf turbo, can be varied results, often reliability issues, etc. Done well I guess it can be successful, but i hear more failures than successes.

Hi DJ, we have a GCG ball bearing hi flow on an R32GTST with an RB20DET that makes 210 rwkw and another on an R34GTT with an RB25DET that makes 240 rwkw, both at 1.3 bar and on Optimax. If I stick some ELF LMS in the R34 I could easily make 270 rwkw at 1.4 bar which is the theoretical turbo limit of 450 bhp.

The RB20 is internally untouched with GTR pump, R32 GTR intercooler, slit dump, 3" exhaust, HKS POD, shield and air feed and Power FC and has 170,000 k's on it. The RB25, with 60,000 k's has lots more external mods (no internal though). It has Tomei cams, porting, R33 GTR intercooler, split dump, 3.5" exhaust, Power FC, Z32 AFM, injectors, Bosch fuel pump, HKS pod with shield and air feed. This car makes standard boost (0.6 bar) at the same RPM as it did when it was standard. The porting, cams exhaust etc all help the hi flow make boost earlier than would be the case with them.

From personal experience this a nice all round set up for a road and sometimes track (drag or circuit) RB25DET. Any more and they get very laggy and the cost spirals dramatically.

This is similiar to the results Ben achieved with the HPI R34 which made 231 rwkw at 1.1 bar. His didn't have the split dump, a 3" exhaust and the head wasn't ported, but it had a thick head gasket (I don't like them). I have the Croydon dyno sheet somewhere around if you want it.

A high flow turbo is essentially new.

All wearing parts should be replaced as part of the hi-flow/re-build...if they are not replaced i would be talking to another turbo shop. So from a reliability perspective, new of hi-flow should be the same

As for the same response, that aint going to happen, unless you crack open the engine.

Think aout the inertia of bigger wheels, as it increases so does the torque required to spin it, that and the typical use of slightly larger (or at least the same) A/R then the exhaust gases wont be able to spin the turbine as quickly as a std turbo.

Considerig the old R32 Drag GTR used twin 2540R then id say a 2540 (or maybe equiv Garret GT25) may be agood option. Low mount turbo that behaves much like a larger series of turbo.

Hi guys, I am not a fan of 2540's way more lag than a 2530 and not much more power.

So on a intrenally std RB25 if a well tuned 2530 is making 230rwkws at 1.3bar, what would be a fair expectation from the 2540, and what sort of rpm increase in boost threshold???

I have been in an RB25 with a 2530, and my god the thing was almost a NA engine, boost response was sensational and the power very impressive.

I havent been in a car with a 2540 so shouldnt comment, but if it doesnt make the power your after, then id be content with the 230rwks from the Gough & Gilmour 2530

Can't argue they're not impressive figures, however looking at the GCG site with the turbo you're talking about: XTRGTST-STG1 450hp rated $1950.00 and this is *exchange*. I don't quite see the logic other than keeping the cops and maybe EPA off your back.

I think the newish T517z or HKS 2530 seems to be the better option..

He'll probably trounce cars with much bigger turbos where it matters, and thats down low for the street.

Hi predator, firstly the prices people put on their web site are recommended retail, otherwise they get into trouble with others. So ring them up and ask the price, or better still drop in and have a chat. You might be pleasantly surprised.

A lot of people only look at the price of the part itself, what about all the other things you have to change and/or modify to get it to fit? With a ball bearing hi flow of your standard turbo it all fits back on exactly as it came off. You don't have to worry about dump pipes, bolt sizes, inlet pipes, oil pipes, water pipes, compressor outlet pipes, gaskets, wastegate actuator plumbing etc etc.

Plus you are not going to buy a new 2530 for anywhere near what you can get your turbo ball bearing hi flowed (and fully reconditioned). A used 2530 is a gamble, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. I am not a gambling man, so I always get used turbos serviced, it simply isn't worth the risk.

Bottom line, it's your choice, I can only speak from my experience

It's funny... when I email well "known" turbo shops and ask them what turbo would be suitable for 250rwkw on an RB25DET they all say GT30 but everyone on here says get the GCG 450hp setup.

GCG 450hp = ~$2200

GT30 Setup = ~$4000

I wonder why that is....
