Diy: Turbo Timer Install Without A Harness

Recommended Posts

If you’re anything like me, you purchased your turbo timer and got impatient… or cheap… and decided to not buy a turbo timer harness to go with it.

While a harness would make installation a lot easier and quicker, they aren’t always necessary.

Here is how I installed my turbo timer, without a harness, into my R32.

Tools / equipment needed:

- Phillips head screw driver

- Wire stripper / cutter

- 3 x Wire connectors

- Turbo timer

1) This it the turbo timer I used. 5R Racing “Shadow”. Purchased this morning from Autobarn for a mere $80.

2) Removed the lower plastic panel below the steering wheel column and locate the wiring that runs out of the ignition barrel. Mine was sleeved with a green plastic covering.

3) The following is the colour codes for the ignition barrel wiring. I hard a very hard time finding R32 specific colours, but did manage to find R31 colours. I decided to run with these, and found that they were exactly the same. 33/34 may be different….

Black / Green – ECU Signal (?)

Black /Yellow – Starter solenoid (?)

Black / White – Ignition

White / Red – 12V constant

Blue – Accessories

For the turbo timer I am using, I had to splice into the 12V, ignition and Accessories wires as per the timers instructions. First step was to make sure the wires being cut are correct. I did this by cutting the acc wire first, then checking to see if the acc turned on or not. If it stays off when the key is turned to that spot, it’s the correct one. This was repeated for the ignition and 12v.

The correct wires were then cut and stripped.

4) The turbo timer came with it’s own plug, but as I would not be using this, I cut it off and stripped the red, blue and yellow wires so that I could connect them to the ignition barrel wires previously stripped.

5) With all the wires stripped and following the timers instructions, the red, blue and yellow turbo timer wires were connected to their corresponding ignition barrel wires.

The wires where joined were then properly and securely connected/insulated using wire connectors.

6) The black wire running out of the turbo timer needs to be earthed to the chassis of the car.

The brown wire running out of the turbo timer can either be connected to the park brake switch OR can be earthed with the black wire (if the park brake function is to not be used). Your turbo timer may be different.

As I couldn’t be bothered fart arseing around with the park brake, I decided to earth them both. I connected both wired to a “U” shaped connector… thing… and picked a spot in the drivers side kick panel where an existing wire was already earthed to connect it to.

7) All wired up :P

8) Once it’s all wired up, test it out to make sure it works. In this pic, you can see that the key is removed and the timer is counting down with the car still running. 22 seconds after taking this pic, the car turned itself of. Awesome.

9) That’s it. Reassemble the interior plastic and find a spot to mount the timer. (somewhere easily accessible and visible).

Cheers and good luck :P
