Im just finishing off a heap of changes on my rb25, and was thinking the briaded lines feeding my new turbo could use some protecting maybe, Ive got the exhaust housing ceramic coated, and the dump and front pipe heat wrapped already

Am I being overly pedantic to want to use heat resistant or flame proof insulation on the braided lines?

Ive seen other turbo installs using braided lines with no ceramic coating and no hose protection and the owners seem ok with running like that, but would it be recommended to use some protecting sleeves on the lines?

As for General Cooling

Im running a vented bonnet, a HKS oil cooler, a ARC super induction box with air feed from bonnet, and of course a Greddy FMIC & radiator air guide along with a RIPS front facing plenum, all in the name of response and cooling...

I was thinking of making a front undertray/splitter with air guides to the front brakes & oil cooler located in front of passenger wheel.. would making it out of alloy sheet be ok or does anyone have other suggestions? it would possibly be out past the front bar by 3inches or so, it may be only track friendly.

Any other cooling suggestions?

If you want to get right into it, check out Pyrotek Pyrojacket.

Have seen it on some top-notch, HIGH-powered cars... Bright orange, flame-proof heat-shield for hoses.

That being said have also seen many high-powered cars running bare braided lines (as you mentioned)

Like everything, just depends how far you want to go I suppose...

I personally have been running unshielded Aeroquip (hi-temp "rubber") water lines & oil drain from my turbo for years & they are still like new.

No ceramic-coating or even heat-shields around my turbo either. Will be a job for next time turbo's off but not a problem so far...

General cooling is the same, depends how far you want to go... Could ceramic-coat (or insulate someway) what intercooler-piping is under the bonnet & piping from airbox to turbo, ceramic-coat manifold, heat-shield &/or wrap everything, bigger radiator, etc, etc...

Looks like it would be a tuff part to wrap properly, 1in wide wrap or thinner???

What braid are you running?

Regular rubber stuff will need protection if it's running very close to manifolds as it's only 130 degree resistant. Just get a hi temp sheath for it http://www.mscn.com.au/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=495

Teflon stuff is more resistant and you will have no issue with it in 99% of applications (as long as it isn't directly resting on anything) as it's rated over 230 degrees. costs more, but not much more than regular braid and a sheath.

    • Personal experience. Those f**kers burn. And are actually a PITA to put out. Next time I walk down the back, I'll snap a photo of what the inside of the bonnet looks like when that thing ignites. PS, powder fire extinguishers are useless on that stuff too as it's fibrous and when it ignites, it starts to pull apart. And you end up just blowing powder through a sieve effectively.   Like the big thing is, if it's fire resistant, it's job is to stop what burning? The METAL above it? It's just to try keep heat off the bonnet paint work.

    • That's more or less what he meant. What it really means is that you do not have to go full crazy on the build. Don't need the best oil pump, expensive rods & pistons, big cams, etc. You can upgrade whatever you want instead of using stock level items, but you don't have to. Having said that - any time an RB is opened up, if anything is getting replaced, I think the opportunity should be taken to do all the sensible upgrades. Pistons, rods, pump, etc.
    • February update 🙂 We managed to get the very last 1/18th "Extra Scale" cars stock available from bookstores in Kyoto. These are actually the last ones and will not be restocked again!
