Yeah I'm aware of that part Rolls, What I probly should have mentioned is that I'm trying to find the source of why my Rb3025 is so laggy. when it shouldn't be. It's booked in with a shop for diagnosing next week to see if I have missed something obvious when I did the timing.

I guess what I should have said is at idle should the solenoid be seeing any voltage at all? I have 10V @ idle is this normal? and I also have 10V @ 2500 RPM ( with AC on, Car in gear) I would have thought it would be either 0v or 14v depending on which way it defaults to. I also wonder if the 34 needs more load on the motor to trick it to trigger when the car is stationary compared to the R33.

Either way its going to a shop who hopefully will figure out whats causing the issue/s.

it should be seeing voltage at all times as the ECU grounds the solenoid, it doesn't provide power.

Only real way to test if it is getting a signal is to put a current meter on it really, voltage may droop a little when it pulls the voltage but if it is wired to the battery then there won't be any droop as it is only 1amp. If it isn't making a decent click noise then you can rule it out as broken though.

R34 is smart, I think it needs a few things, TPS to indicate throttle, be in gear and also have your speed above 10kph is what I've heard in the past.

Cheers Rolls,

Good point on the earthing. I wired the solenoid directly to the battery and it made a very audible click. So I believe its definitely operating. But whether it's working properly under it normal conditions I'm yet to see. Will keep you informed with what I find. I think you might be on the money with the 10kph bit too.

I set the data logger to record the VTC output and with the car stationary I couldn't get the ecu to trigger. But it appears to trigger an output once moving.

if you really wanna test the solenoid pull it out of the head and make sure it blocks off the oil gallery when earthed out. if it does and its getting triggered by the ecu then its working, the only way for the cam not to advance then is if theres something wrong internally which is very rare

Hey Rob I did that as mentioned in my 1st post

I removed the VCT plug and applied power directly to the solenoid and it clicked as it should have. I measured the voltage at the plug @ idle and it had 10v but I couldn't get it to trigger and go any higher.

which with out rigging the multimeter up and driving around was all that I can tell. But it has got me thinking, Rolls said that the VCT solenoid earths through the ecu. so therefore I wonder if he is possibly wrong on the part that it should always be seeing current. normally with solenoid's or coils there either on or off. supplying current all the time would just create heat especially if its neither on or off.

But all this really doesn't matter because its now at JPC for them to look at and find the problem.

What rolls said was correct and if you put a multimeter across the pins then you should only see either 13volts when the solenoid is energized or 0v when off.

I don't believe the r34's are current controlled drivers but it maybe worth checking to see if the power wire is connected to ignition(as the r33 is) if it is then it should be the same as the r33.

And as for cam phasers not working - I was diagnosing about 1 Subaru a month at my previous job. So I wouldn't rule that out.

The positive pin will always have 12v, the earth pin will only have zero volts when it is on.

So fi you are earthing on the chassis it will always show 12v on the solenoid, so make sure you have both pins in the plug, not just the positive.

Hey guys, yeah when I was testing with the multimeter I never actually earthed to the chassis on either pin. I was measuring voltage between the two pins on the plug.

Therefore from that it would be pretty safe to assume that its earthing constantly. Doesn't matter any way cos the cars in the shop and I can't test it.

Cheers for all your help guys, it was very helpful.

    • Probably why it's more on their trade site. I didn't check if it was on the normal site. At least trade/mechanics will have an oil disposal point.
    • The Varex is good if you want the ability to quieten down a really loud exhaust, and a fairly simple install if you have the clearance  In saying this, a well designed exhaust, that doesn't drone, and "close" to not being a "big heat signature" for the constabulary, is a better way to go Noise does not = power, but a well designed exhaust that isn't "overly" loud will not negatively effect power, it will though keep the constabulary off your back I had a Varex, and it worked well, super quiet when closed, but sounded like war when open and up it, I did have available "realestate" clearance issues under the old SS though running a 4" exhaust, and the Varex was the best option for me, as the space where the rear box went was available for the valve, so compromises were made to quieten it down I have seen, and heard, alot of nice RB's with just some resonators and/or muffler/s, which, while sounding "beefy" were not obnoxious cruising around, and not something that draws unwanted attention, but, they did get real rowdy when up it The trick is to get an exhaust fabricated that doesn't break your brain, or your passengers willingness to be in the car, on a Hwy cruise, i.e. no drone, and also not have your neighbours breaking your balls because their house vibrates and wakes their family when you roll in late at night, or when you head out early in morning, but it also sounds real good to the ear Post up when your done, whilst I no longer own a RB, I do love their sound with a nice exhaust, especially when there's a lumpy cam lopping away
    • Interesting reading, regarding people's worry that their Insurance won't end up meaning anything come time to claim. This always worried me also. I had my GTR insured with RACV vintage veteran classic when everyone was doing that around 10 years ago. For the first few years my premium was $300-$350 odd for the year, bear in mind originally the car was only insured for $18k (what i paid for it). after a year or 2 i had increased the value to $25k and then they announced that they weren't insuring skylines anymore and that you couldn't increase the values of existing policies. At first when the values were <45k i wasn't worried and was just happy to have cheap premiums. When i put the car on club plates i called them to let them know and they told me the price of my premium would reduce, (policy was due for renewal the following month) when i got my renewal notice i was stunned to see my premium had gone down to $82 for the year! i read through all the documents and everything seemed fine. I figured it was just some random error that would get picked up on the next renewal, but come time for the next renewal there was an increase.....of around $4 for the year 🤣 this went on year upon year, the increases ramped up a little but come 2025 my premium was still only $130. Every year come renewal i would debate whether or not I should go elsewhere and insure the car for it's correct value (around $60k in today's market i would say) but given the low risk (car only does 1000-1500Km per year, and always out of the city) plus the fact as talked about above that they would probably try a wriggle out of any claim anyway I stayed with the cheap premium. My main concerns were as above - 'illegal' mods, nothing major just the usual - turbo's, ECU etc.. Christmas eve (last year) I got up early to go for a drive out in the Yarra Valley, past Healsville, conditions were shit, fog, wet, tree debris on the roads, i decided to head for home and after accelerating past a 4wd who pulled over to let me past in the Black Spur i lost it and ended up sliding into a bank. (If anyone here is on the FB group you will have seen my pictures). Anyway long story short, I had prepared myself that insurance wasn't going to give me anything, but they paid out with no fuss and as the car was over 35 years old (literally by 1 month!) I got to keep the car for free!! Sold the car for $17.5k which went some way towards making me feel better about the under-insurance. Had another claim with RACV 5 years ago when some dickhead crashed into two of my cars writing both of them off out on the street in front of my house. He had no insurance and gave us an old license with a different address on it. One car had full comp so was fine but my runabout N14 Pulsar only had third party, however I put in a claim under the 'Uninsured motorist extension' part of their policy, not expecting much....they paid me out more than twice what i had paid for the car in the first place, plus i got to keep the car, It only required some DIY panel beating on the drivers door to get it to shut properly again and some suspension adjustment to counter the hectic negative camber that had been introduced on the rear. Have  been driving ever since with no problems!   So there you go, Insurance sometimes works out!! I have to say it puts me off getting another Skyline (as the next one would be more modified for sure) worrying about whether or not all the money going towards insurance is actually going to be of use come claim time, wondering if i should just buy a stock M2/M4 and be done with it......
