Thankyou, recommend a brand? dont want crap stuff but obviously the theme of this thread is dont fall into the brand name trap..

anything mate, its just a gear - you can have your factory ones modified for like $150 :(

Or buy justjap ones, just ensure you change the bolts to higher quality ones though, costs a couple bucks - jap stuff is double the price for no reason end of the day.

But come on people....its easy to say go and support other brands which Joe, Steve and Mary say are awesome. But you have to understand some peoples scepticism or reluctance to step away from known, big brands when it comes to components in the suspension that are being based around on a race track

Me, I have Nissan and Nissan and a Noltec upper arm and a Cusco castor rod. I am wary of even the big brand parts! :) Sure as shit nothing from JJR is going into my cars suspension. It could be fine.... but.... I am not even happy about changing out the bolts and rose joints. So jjust because there are some Evil Kenevil's out there that are happy making their own gear..... you have to respect this is the internet and so much BS gets posted here. Hell I dont even trust a person to care enough about my car when i send it off for a wheel alignment with all this gear to do it properly, with the time and care taken to set it up correctly. And lets not forget my other concern, two sessions into my new susp gear and alignment there is a knocking sound because they didnt even care enough to torque things up correctly...and guess what. Stuff in there is loose. :(

So, I know of plenty of reasons why I ike bushes in std arms :) In an R32 the front upper gets shagged pretty quickly, why i went Noltec. I ran out of castor, so went a Cusco castor rod as its something I can easily keep an eye on at the track. Everything else...as Nissan intended baby. :woot: Means i have nto spent money to go backwards with crap that was meant to be good but is shit. Likewise people who are meant to know what they are on about but know shit. (thats not a stab at posters here by the way...its the dicks over the years that have farked me around and charged me cash for the privilege because me like most of us...is just another guy with another car.

Can you do better then IF gear? Probably. Can you go cheaper , yep....but where is the balance between cheap and oops I just lost an arm under braking and my car just had a big mouthful of armco :(

So...long winded post to say take it easy on the guy wanting to go the more proven path forward which wont involved weeekend after weekend of why my car handles like shit because that guys neighbour really was a good welder but didnt know shit about dynamics of Nissan suspension geometry...or he is a boffin but too proud to admit he cant weld for shit and they were perfectly designed, its just that they failed on the second lap. yaddayaddayadda

We dont all drive "hero" cars that workshops want to work on or be associated with. We dont all have hero cars that places even care to work on. We dont all know people that do right by us. So I say keep it simple unless the same informed person on suspension stuff is setting it up for you and standing by the performance of the car OR go find the guy banging around fast in the car and reverse engineer baby. Gods sake, you have a GTR, so many proven recipes for them...just go and copy! :)

Reason for the rant!!!!! I can see with all your enthusiasm for your new car but just get busy driving it....start forming your own opinions on what it may need and then ask more focussed questions/ requessts for advice. At the moment this is a free for all of different into, all genuine enough but nobody (including you?) really seems to know what you want to be doing with this car....just start enjoying it on the track as soon as possible.

Odds are being an R32 your mods list will have more to do with the crap you are breaking every weekend then what you want to be doing for performance gains :)

Yes but come on Troy, you on the piss again or something?

Guys are posting here, and doing such hard work with various rally/hill climb & so on using these "non-jap" name parts, saying its perfectly fine and legitimately so having gone through the ringer. These guys are running much closer to the edge on a road rally type thing than someone doing roundy roundy on a circuit.

Any part can fail, big brand name or not.

I've had Nismo stuff fail, Garrett, OS Giken & so on. Big names, big ticket prices - just how it goes!

Most rally GTRs arent even meant to be running suspension arms? So are the cars you thinking of actually running them? So its the roundy roundy folk that have the most kms on them (most likely).

Point is...its easy to say bad idea...its harder to give a phone number, a price and a guarantee that everything will work out fine!

each to their own, i will be running IK gear because i have used it on my previous track car and it work and work well.

Same goes for spring rate, everyone keeps telling me 10/10 is too hard but then again it worked for my previous track car :( Anyways should be interesting none the less.

Your GTR will have an extra what, 150kg?

will be interesting indeed, my prediction is that of everyone else - you'll be slower than the budget guys :P

I think most threads these days follow the same story... ask for advice and still stick with original intentions if advice isnt what you wanted to hear. Theres more to offer parts wise than the japanese calalogues. Get out and actually speak to people who have fast track gtrs and get advice, not people who wish they did. Sounds like the blind leading the blind.

Ive read heaps of info on the bad design of the 32 front susp yet people will spend thousands of dollars on bolt on options that dont actually solve the issue.

To the OP if you have used Ikeya then what else have you compared it to? people are quick to say how great something is but dont even have anything else to compare to? Same with the rock hard suspension, how do u know if they werent a little softer it wouldnt have been 10 times better?

Ok, so be it me or Kaido... i hate my car with 17s and its 5mm lower then std ride height (about 350mm guard to wheel centre) . I would like it to ride about 330-335mm but that is a secondary concern. I more then anything want a shopping list of sure fire fixess.

My car, an R32 GTSt has std suspension arms with bushes with the exception of Noltec front upper arms and Cusco castor rods. My front tie rod arms are Ikea, rod ends Moonface, with Nissan replacement inner rod ends on the back.

So, i dont need to have roll centre adjustment and things that whilst I understand, could be farked wasiting weekends and expensive track days dialling in and getting right.

So whether its upper and lower arms, welded and modded std arms...i dont really care. I dont care if they are pink with stickers saying Troy is a fag! I just want the proven solution, that wotn break way before expectation...will allow me to get good alignment, good ride height with good geometry. I am running revalved Tein RAs with 6/5 spring and RE55s, thoguh AO50s may be the go next.

Be awesome if someone could sound off on parts, suppliers, part numbers... Looking at SPL & Cazman etc they do upper arms like many others. If the std lower arms, and the std rear toe arm is fine then happy to read that all i really need is new rear upper arms and perhaps some bushes put through the std gear. Will add, happy to buy an R34 or R34 rear end if thast is a better place to start or throw away what I already have

Don't know if it's been said already but I think you'll find that to run jap spring rates like all the fast jap cars you will need more aero to make it work.

I was at EC for superlap and the tomei/cusco WRX was crazy stiff but it also had crazy aero.

I'm still running jap spring rates (troy will know the exact specs) and I'm getting great times but I still think a slightly lower rate would be even better.

My 2c

There are a few points of view being put forward, the guy chooses the one which you don't agree with and he's ignoring everyone?

Little bit of pot kettle black going on here.....

I'll proudly stand up here and say my car has only Fulcrum eccentric bushes in the front and rear upper arms and castor rods :D

That's legal for the rallies I do, and cheap! I'm also a tight arse :(

I'd rather spend the money on fuel and rubber to practice. I figure it's easier to teach me to drive it quicker than spend time and money on arms.

Kaido, my suggestion is do the minimum required to get it track reliable, and feel the car out, making changes only if you think there will be a tangiable improvement. I don't see much point in throwing a catalogue at it and endlessly chasing the right heights and settings.

Advised settings differ from everyone around the country. I've lost track of the PMs I've received asking for my basic settings, only to be told I'm blatantly wrong! Lol

I agree with Marlin above most definitely regarding adjustable bushes.

I would also like to go back to diff centres, particularly if anyone has experience with Torsion diffs in the front like that offered by Quaife instead of a 1.0/1.5 way? Would it be a better option? I am not sure if they are rebuildable like a Nismo 1.0/1.5/2.0 which uses clutch type plates.

As far as I can tell the only major benefit of a carbon diff is the silence & smoothness in daily driving.

There's a day and night difference in NVH between my Kaaz and ATS carbon 1.5 ways.

Not really any performance difference I can tell however except for smoothness of engagement.

yeah the carbon products offer smoothness but they also have different heat handling capability. but like I said for a car being used as a track car and fun road car there is no need for the extra expense unless you have money to spare (no one with a GTR does!). I do really like carbon clutches though. the ATS carbon twin plates for GTRs are amazingly good to use. probably the best GTR clutch I've used.

i'm about to get my gtr tuned with standard turbos, going down the route of getting everything else sorted first, so it would be worth the money to get a set of cam gears before my tune?

yes, definitely get some adjustable cam gears before the tune so they can be adjusted too when it's tuned.

as far as brand. envy imports in sydney make good ones. they use standard gears that they cut the centre out of and fit an adjustable piece. this is good as the outer parts is still factory (steel and strong). some alloy gears suffer from the teeth wearing but these wont. and with 5 fasteners they shouldn't slip either. apart from those I also like the tomei and trust gears. other workshops around also make their own using standard gears like envy does too, as long as they are made properly they are a good option.

Well I managed to pick up some flag-r ohlins last night. Got them for 89500 yen + shipping. Just gotta organize 6k and 8k swift springs for them now. And Barron ur right the springs are cheap, just under 15000 yen a pair :D

well done. yeah the swift springs are well priced and top quality. they make springs for F3 etc and I think even F1 at certain points in time.

http://www.swiftsprings.com/history.html

the 04 24hr le man winning audi used swift spings... and it's not cause the audi budget was too small for a set of eibach's i'm sure...

have a look at this and you will see why not all springs feel the same. you can buy 2 sets of say 8kg springs and one can feel completely different to the other. look at how much some springs rates change under compression. and also how differently they rate springs.

    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
    • 100% accurate!  We are a pack of know it alls....  But, I bet people go to you when they have a problem! I've been on a bit of a clean up rampage too over the past month!  I've thrown more shit in the bin over the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 3 years combined! Anyway, it's all good fun being different! My wife sometimes does not agree!
