hello all i'm new to the world of skylines since i just got my 1990 skyline gts-t

Here's the intro.

i love my new baby but it hasn't been a smooth ride, took abit of work to get to where i am now, the car had a new motor and gbox put in done 80k and 20k but soon after i ran into problems such as limp modes :P and rough idle which i've fixed (for anyone who is wondering it was caused by faulty cam angle sensor, ignitor and afm) which took me nearlly a month of searching since it was a very intermittent problem.

so far i have installed apexi pod, new coilpack and sparks(non branded), took the cat out, put 3" tube instead and but a hks style muffler on. alot more planned but due to $ i have to fix my probs first.

Now the car is running much better than start but i have another issue thatwas bothering me,

when i turn the ignition on, the car starts runs slightly rough and suddenly rpm rises and falls back down to about 1000-900 which i heard was normal on rb engines, (correct me if i'm worng), might get a good earth kit and split fires to fix that

but

my main concern is in the exhaust, (the car had been outside in the rain in wonter for about 2 weeks when it went to the garage) now i didnt notice it b4 but when i changed the muffler to hks type the exhaust sound seems irregular, for example it doesnt keep a constant tune all the time, it sometimes makes a very very soft pop? pulse, change in pitch dont know how to describe perfectly.. sorry... then goes to normal sound and suddenly changes sound again and so on, as if its blocked which i checked but wasnt.

and also since taking the cat out it seems to make more smoke out of the exhaust, not thick but normal exhaust smoke whitish colour is this normal? just condensation? since it's been abit wet these days?

i havee searched high and low but maybe its normal for skylines? what could be the issue with my exhaust sound? is it supppose to sound abit irregular? any input would be much appreciated thank you for reading my long post.

found a slightly better description,

idles fairly smoothly as per normal however you can feel these low-pitched subtle pops/thumps coming out of the exhaust which you can feel while sitting in the car. when you drive it doesnt jump around or miss or anything but kinda bothers me, anyone have any idea what this is?? please help!

Hey man... exact same thing with mine.... But i dont find it to be a problem?

The RB20DET is a tad old and i would imagine a "SEMI" rough start up in the mornings is normal? It vibrates and does a bop bop bop bop bop bop in a very low tune.... rev shoots up to about 2000 then down to 900.... then bop bop bop bop bop.... until it has warmed up!

After about 3-5 minutes the engine has warmed up a bit and it is up and running ready to hit boost ! the drive is perfect up until the next time you start the car in the morning...

Let me know if there is something wrong with that.. haha because i find it normal...

yeah sounds real similar to mine, in the initial start it's abit rougher than i want it to be but if its normal then i guess i cant complain,

do you get the low thumping noise from exhaust after you're in idle as well? like normal tone..... then suddenly thump...normal then thump thump then back to normal again, kinda sounds like it's missing? or blocked or something, the cars rpm is steady though, doesnt jump up and down or anything... hmmmm i wonder if this is normal as well... :ermm:

Yeah it seems normal man.... My start use to be a lot worse until i replaced the battery and spark plugs...Since then it has improved a lot! but still a little rough... Not enough to phase me though

Love the 32 =D and the low tune the RB puts out... mmmh sex!

    • I know this one’s the BB one. My tuner did make mention about the actuator. I am curious about the VCT as well
    • Might also needs a stronger actuator with the right preloading. With older 2019 built bush G3 units, BB upgrade or 21U housing down size makes a pretty decent gain in response as well.
    • Hey lads  so im finally putting together my rb30 forged bottom end and ran into an issue. I measured my main bearing clearance with arp main studs torqued to 60 ft-lbs using ACL H series STD size bearings and standard, un-ground crank shaft journals and got an oil clearance reading of about 1.3 thou measuring straight up and down and about 2.8 thou measuring at a 45 degree angle (just above and below the parting line). My machine shop said they measured the main tunnel and it was all within spec (they didnt say the actual measurement) and to go with a standard size bearing, which i have done and the clearance is too tight, I'm guessing because of the extra clamping force from the arp studs distorting the main tunnel. I was wanting to run about 2.5 thou main bearing clearance.  My questions are: 1. could i just use the HX extra 1 thou clearance ACL bearings? that would fix my straight up and down clearance making it about 2.3 thou, but then would the side to side clearance be too big at around 3.8 thou? 2. what actually is the recommended main bearing clearance for measuring near the parting line / side to side. i know its supposed to be bigger as the bearing has some eccentricity built into it but how much more clearance should there be compared to the straight up and down measurement? at the moment there is about 1.5thou difference, is that acceptable or should it be less? 3. If i took the engine block + girdle back to the machine shop and got them to line bore the main tunnel (like i told them to do the first time, but they said it didnt need it) what bearing size would i buy? the STD size bearing shells already slide in fairly easily with no real resistance, some even falling out if i tip the girdle up-side-down. If im taking material out of the main tunnel would i need a bearing with extra material on the back side to make up for it? this is probably confusing af to read so if something doesn't make sense let me know and ill try explaining in a different way. My machine shop doesn't come back from christmas break until mid January, hence why i'm asking these questions here. TIA for any help or info
    • I bought the model back in Japan in Feb. I realised I could never build it, looked around for people who could build it, turns out there's some very skilled people out there that will make copies of 1:1 cars or near enough. I'm not really a photo guy... but people were dragging me in a group chat for the choice of bumper as someone else saw the car before it was finished as they are also a customer of that shop. I took the photo in the above post because I was pretty confident that the lip would work wonders for it. Here's some more in-progress and almost-done pics. It gives a good enough idea as to what the rear looks like!   I have also booked in a track day at the end of January. Lets all hope that is nothing but pure fun and games. If it's not pure fun and games, well, I've already got half an engine spare in the cupboard
    • Well, do ya, punk? Seriously though, let's fu<king go! The colour and kit looks amazing on the car. Do you have any shots from the rear? I don't quite follow how the model came around. You bought the white kit and he modified it to match your car? Looks nuts either way!
