What Have I Broken?

So I was doing an oil and filter change yesterday, and this thing came out stuck to the magnetic sump plug:

What is it, and should I be worried? Can I keep driving the car?

Possibly (part of) an oil squirter?

What is involved in fixing it?

Engine is an RB25DET, NEO block and S1 head

looks like an oil squirter to me!!! Nah man i wouldnd be driving it!! you should be able to take the sump off and just bolt a new one in!!!

definetely an oil squirter. not sure how easy it would be to do with engine in place as its above the crank under the lip of the bore.

Hey,

That does look like an oil squirter and if so its not good, if you continue to drive since that has come off the piston will start to develop hot spots as the underside of the piston is no longer getting cooled and ping off its head.

The engine needs to be pulled apart to get at it, I am going through the same problem except mine was due to incorrect clearences when it was being re-built http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Sn...58#entry5396958

Dug out my old RB20 (NICS) oil squirters to compare:

They look similar, but not the same. Does this mean I cannot replace it with one of these? Can I replace all 6 with these ones?

The ones in my pic are RB20's in a RB25, they just need to be installed correctly

I would probably just buy a neo squirter, otherwise its a gamble when you pull the sump off should be fine to drive, as long as the oil light doesnt come on, and you dont track it.

i have seen this a couple of times on the forums, is it a common thing? what causes it?

is that seroiusly an oil squirter ? what holds it in? which bit of it squirts . looks like the end off an oil can . even then its a bit crude

and it looks nothing like the other ones in the link above . or any i have ever seen

LachlanW i reckon it looks like the end of an oxy torch lol. let us know how you go as i want to know how hard it is to change this (IE in car or engine out)

I have no idea how common it is, but it is seems it is either caused by the piston being installed backwards, or the clearance between the piston and the squirter being incorrect, either one causes the piston to hit the squirter and break it.

Yeah, I looked up the part number in fast (NEO ones are different to all other 20/25 ) and a bit of googling found the following picture:

It's not the best picture, but to me its clearly the same thing.

Unfortunately they are approx 75 bux a pop trade price, and have to come from japan, couldn't give me an ETA .

One of my mates has a 25 on a stand atm, so I'm going round this arvo to have a look and try and get an idea of how hard it will be to change in car. If it's too hard, I might just not bother

Sprints on Sunday, it won't be fixed by then, so it might blow up and save me having to worry about it . A 25 short motor can't be worth too much these days...

oil pressure would be low without the banjo bolt in?

banjo bolt is still in, pressure shouldn't have changed. It's broken remember, not come undone. It should just be spraying water oil across the bore, not up to the bottom of the piston

Survived the day at Lakeside yesterday, oil squirters are overrated

I'm pretty sure the oil squirters are to keep the piston temps down, not so much for lubrication, so as long as your combustion temps are ok and your tune is safe, shouldn't have too much of a problem!

Still, Nissan put them in there for a reason...
