After spending two weeks straitening all the fins on my radiator some months back, I had hoped my FMIC install would be a bit smoother. But alas I guess that's the drawback of buying a second hand FMIC.

It got me thinking about not wanting to ever do it again and how to prevent it. And I thought about the fly screen mesh stuff. Obviously it will impede some airflow, but how much I wonder? Has anyone covered their FMIC at all? Mine's also been very lightly spray painted matte black so I'm sure I've lost a few % on the cooling efficency, but it's an ARC return flow unit and looks very well made.

yep stainless steel security mesh, I went to a security door place and got an offcut, then measured it up cut it with a cutting disc on grinder and got a fab shop to bend it so it fit snug on the back of my S2 front bar...

in black looks sweet and nothing is going to damage that stuff...

autobarn mesh is an utter joke... looks cheap aint strong at all and tacky anodised colours

75 any chance you to post a pic of your mesh close up?

it being sprayed wont have lost any efficiency

It has to lose a slight bit of heat transfer efficiency as you're adding a layer of non-conductive paint to the metal. That said, the paint isn't thick and the hot air post-compressor is very hot compared to ambient air, which means the heat transfer rate will be plenty high. The fmic just needs to cool the air down because the compressor gets so hot, it doesn't need to be exactly ambient.

cheer`s Chuckie.

damn, that looks really good, nice work

chuckie, anychance you have some higher res versions of those photos? For some reason I can't actually see the mesh, just dark "stuff" in the pics.

I went to a security door place the other day and found these meshes. But they are incredibly strong and thick and I think total overkill for covering my FMIC. These things are so tough you couldn't kick them in, but they also restrict the airflow majorly too. So I don't think they are the right ones, but I did get an offcut for $10.
