Hey everyone

Does anyone know if a mobile camera car (stupid cars with bull bar mounted cameras) can read over 4 lanes of traffic with a huge island in the middle. I was on the Calder Freeway just outside Kyneton on Monday and went to over take a truck and there was a camera on the otherside of the road. I figured it wouldn't be able to detect that far away but I thought I'd ask

Sounds like your talking about the roof-mounted digital cameras. The ones on the bull bar are designed to do traffic going one way, not sure how many lanes.

as far as i know

they can cover a few lanes but only work if there is one car on the picture, if there is 2 cars there is no proof which is speeding ..Same goes for fixed cameras at intersections..

If you are ever flashed and feel there was another car in the photo you should request to see the photo if you are fined, if there is another car you cannot be fined...

In vic. they can shoot up to 4 lanes.

however in a median strip set up they shoot in the away only mode.. Meaning they only assess traffic in the two lanes on one side of the road.

If the camera was on the other side of the road facing you, you will be fine.

I know this 100%.

do you work in that industry?

Ive been done before from the other side of the road (across 4 lanes it would have been), put it on my mums name and then she wrote a letter saying she was unfamiliar with the area (was 9kms over) since she hasn't had a fine in years they let it go.

i must disagree.

both myself and my housmate got flashed yesterday heading towards a camera car on the other side of the road.. it was residential area 50zone so very easy for the camera to detect your speed i'd imagine. i went back to check it out and they definately flash cars coming towards them on the other side of the road.

news to me too as i usually keep an eye on lhs of the road..

I've seen people get done when the camera is on my side, lhs, and they're oncoming to the camera, although these are only little 2 way roads not highways... I wouldn't imagine it could get you across the Calder, how would it be able to focus close and far at the same time...

Jack-That's what my theory was as well.

I wasn't behind the truck I was over taking it cos it was all over the road, so I was trying to get around it in a hurry.

Well I will have to wait and see I think. I got done on my L plates for "disobeying traffic signals" I was on a red for .25 of a second and lost 3 points and a $300 fine so I've been arguing it since Feb of this year. However same intersection someone I know went through those lights 2 months before I did doing 72 in a 60 zone and got a $220 fine and 2 points! So really I would have been better off speeding through the intersection 12 KM's over rather then being on a red for 1/4 of a second. Our system has soooo many flaws

On a 2 lane road without a median strip they might work, I didn't know that though. But then again I don't speed :)

No. However I have a many contacts who do and have a detailed knowledge of the placement and capabilities of the mobile cameras in vic.

A median strip (divided road) setup is different to a non median strip setup. Away traffic (same direction) is only assessed when the car is parked on the far side of the road.

As long as you were across the median strip facing the camera you will be fine.

If the camera was on the median strip facing you then you would get done.

If in the case it was a non median strip road then yes, the cameras can detect in both forward and away (both direction) modes up to 4 lanes.

This is not something I am guessing. It is something I know.

This man is correct.

Cameras can detect both towards and away directions. Speed coming towards a camera gets recorded as a negative. Say on a 50km/h road you will get clocked doing -58km/h, and this breaches the parameter limit of -53.

However, if there is a big enough divide on a major road...e.g. a median strip or highway concrete barrier (not a small traffic island on a suburban sort of road) then it will not detect traffic coming towards it.

On a freeway, mobile camera on the other side of the road, you will be fine.

Also, for the people planning on speeding in pairs...I realise this is a joke but just for interests sake, fixed cameras take two photos: one of you entering the intersection and one of you leaving it...if you're neck and neck with another car for both photos you can't really say it could have been the other guy who was speeding :)

So will you get a fine if this happens?

Cos ive heard mixed stories... My dad recently got booked for doing 4km/h over and the camera flashed to his eyes, he paid the fine and stuff when he got it but a lot of people say he should of contested it cos its illegal (Police didnt give me an exact answer when asked, and solicitors just wanted money)...

Recently (when i still had my supra),

was on a supra cruise, then at the hoddle/victoria st intersection, there's this right turn arrow that is variable, in the afternoon, it lets about 8 to 10 cars pass, but that night it only let 4 cars, out of habit, i went past, not realising the light had turned, but another car next to me went forward to, we both got flashed, but its been 3 or so months and still no letter, i'm guessing it works the same for redlight cameras too?

    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
