Which Car Alarm

So i just got my first skyline

It has no remote central locking and no alarm system. While i'm at it, i'd like remote start.

I've noticed a huge difference price wise between the main brands (e.g. viper etc) and other no name brands on ebay, but the specs seem to be the same.

Has anyone had any experience in the cheaper alarms? I dont need a state of the art alarm but i dont want to have somthing installed that gives up after a few weeks.

any thoughts?

cheers,

Viper #1

also with the amount of threads of cars getting stolen

dont buy a cheapo if you value your car

really? so you are happy with an alarm that only drops the starter?

autowatch for me thanks. drops 3 ckts requires a proper installer to fit the thing and its oz stds - something the viper is not.

all comes down to who installs it, no matter what alarm system it is the install is the main issue because you get lazy installers who dont solder and leave wires exposed so be carefull who you take it to.

I've also been looking at the ebay ones compared to ones in autobarn. The ebay ones (for $45) have the same specs - sometimes more - than the ones in the stores. Might just buy a cheapo one and see how it performs, not a huge loss if it packs in on me, car is always locked away so can always get a expensive one.

remote start is highly illegal in Australia (ADR rules suck)and a defect

so is the turbo timer function of some car alarms

and check your insurance, cause some won't cover you unless it is an AUSTRALIAN approved model

some shops won't install ebay crap, and a how about a warranty ?? shop local, buy local for support reasons

don't try to install it yourself

a guide for approved car alarms and other info

Another option is GPS tracking systems, I fit them for www.intellitrac.com.au, basic tracking systems starting from $299 fitted might be an option for use. If you need more info feel free to pm me

Hi guys,

I'm the Australian Government and we don't want anyone to have unique or interesting cars, because, you know, only hoons drive nice cars.

    • The autos suck. Anyone with an auto wants to go manual. Also, the one thing you don't really need to change is the dash. You don't really need to know (on the dash) what gear position you have selected. What you do have to change is the tailshaft, a bunch of wiring, probably gearbox crossmember, a bunch of fiddly shit like the spigot bearing in the back end of the crank, find a flex plate and a converter, etc. A whole lot of pain. Most of those autos have been rightfully put into metal recycling bins, so they're not exactly easy to find either.
    • Appreciate it man, gives me hope based on my Google searches on availability of GTR parts.  When you say I'm "not going to," is this in the vein of "who on earth would want auto," or more "it's impossible?" Not trying to be rude, truly don't understand haha. I know, it'd be a madman move to go manny to auto, but if it IS my only option, I'd be curious on the lift.
    • Shit's f**ked. Looks like there might be a crack to the intake valve seat on the opposite side of the chamber also. Defo pull the whole thing down. Nothing good can come from just doing the head on a motor with comp figures that low anyway. You'll hate yourself less in the long run.
    • Well hit the first larger snag in the build!    Car wasn’t running 100% right even before I took it for a drive, starting slow and felt like a bit of a miss so compression tested it once I got it into the garage and on stands for the winter.   That would do it…   Got to tearing everything out and was greeted with this   Seat looks a little mangled but somehow the cylinder is fine   Will check the turbine next wonder if the piece made its way in there and chewed up some fins.    Once I survey the extent of the head damage I’m going to have to make a decision. Cylinder 4 is kind of low anyway so might not be a bad idea to take a peek at the bottom end while I’m already in it
