Hey Guys,

Had a peek underneath the car and the SMIC is sitting about 20-30mm lower than it should be. Basically the lowest level of the SMIC is about 20-30mm below the lowest level of the front bar.

I've been told that there may be a couple of screws that have fallen off and so will need to get under the car and check it out.

I haven't hit anything hard or fast, so I'm really not sure how it's dropped to that point.

Any others experienced the same thing?

Reckon Japspec cable ties will do the job to patch it up?

If anyone has an R33 S2 with stock SMIC and stock front bar, if they could take a picture of it and the undertray and post it up here that would be appreciated too. I'm not really sure what it 'should' look like.

Cheers!

That sounds a bit odd, because for it to drop it would have to be dropping out of the intercooler pipes too.

Are you sure it doesnt have an R34 sidemount? They sit a little lower than the R33, and could stick past the undertray slightly. I know when i did mine (before mt FMIC) it popped all the screws for the undertray because it was too tall, and there was alot of pressure on them.

Sorry it doesnt have the front on. But you can see how much lower it is. I just cant see it having dropped as the piping inside the engine bay would be holding onto it.

Thanks for the pics and prompt reply man, that really has helped! - I'll take some pics of mine if I can get home before the sun goes down. I can see what you mean by it being taller, it definitely juts out more.

I've only had this car for about 2-3 months, and I can't really remember it jutting out like how it is now. I am the second owner of this car in Australia.

I'd be surprised if it was a 34 SMIC on a number of levels, firstly, I was told by the previous owner that the car is completely stock apart from a K&N airbox, and secondly, I was actually thinking of doing the 34 SMIC upgrade!

Obviously, I can't be 100% sure that it isn't a 34 cooler, I mean how could anyone really tell unless they've inspected it uber thoroughly...

I'll posty posty some pics soon :)

Cheers!

No problem dude! Theres no way the stock one could stick below the bar unless something was really odd!

You'l know pretty quick. Heres a top view. The size difference is huge.

Good luck! Post up them pics when you get them!

Cheers gotRice!

Thanks for the comparison pics too mate, managed to get some photos although it was done at night so they're a little underexposed, and also a weird blue colour. I should really learn more about our DSLR, anyway the pics, sorry if their a bit shit :D:

I really don't have enough experience to tell, but do you think that's the R34 SMIC?

If not, how can I diagnose what the issue is, everything seems normal and boost comes on fine, although I'm pretty sure the intercooler has dropped a little bit more... :)

Yeah id say for a fact thats an R34 side mount.

From what you can see it looks as if its about 17 rows. Give or take from what you cant see.

The amount its bulging out the bottom was similar to mine, and as i said it was putting so much pressure on the undertray that all the bolts/screws pooped out and the front wheel ate the rest of it in a smokey heap :D

Pull the bottom off and throw a tape measure over the thickness of it. Im pretty sure they are about 70-75mm thick.

Thanks for all your help mate! :D

Looks like I've got a free upgrade with the burger... :)

Lol, now I'm beginning to wonder what type of life this car has had over in Japland, and even here... Or maybe I really don't want to know... :(

I guess I just have to drive more carefully over bumps then, I can already notice a few chinks getting taken out of the bottom of the IC.

Cheers for all your help!

    • Interesting, I haven't read about the issue with oil getting into the speedo in the cluster before. I'll have to take more notice with mine. The speedo on my R32's when I've run factory diff and tyre size have never been accurate as far as I can remember. The non Type-M GTS-t did come with 15" 5 stud wheels and smaller brakes, but that's less than 5% of them.
    • Good to hear the condenser you picked up off my brother worked all good. Do you think there could be an issue with your AC compressor itself or the clutch on it then? I don't know a lot about them so I can't really help but keen to hear what it ends up being. Keep the build thread going man, it's nice to look back on over time.
    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
