This is something that has been bugging me for ages and I have finally had enough!

I have a 32 with a (from what I can gather) a T04e 'AIReasearch' turbo 'upgrade' and all the supporting mods (gtr pump, fuel pressure regulator, 3in exhaust off the turb0, 3.5 off the cat, and 3in intercooler piping!???).

My dilema is the car is incredibly laggy, I am talking full boost 5k. Now is this the turbo or the 3inch intercooler piping (I would have thought once the piping is filled with air it would make little difference).

I know these turbos are old and well not the best so could this be the problem? The car pulls hard all the way to rev limiter producing and really kicks you in the pants from about 5k.

If this is the problem, what is the best turbo that is reponsive down low and still pulls qute hard through the range.

Thanks in advance.

AirResearch is what Garrett was called back then, sounds like a old-school bush bearing turbo, all bush bearing turbos are incredibly laggy.. a nice new Garrett GT ballbearing turbo should make a world of difference, as for which one to choose, read the RB20/RB25 dyno thread. this thread will most likely get locked.. next time search.

rubbish the core is irrelevant, the trims and housing are the important part. The turbo in the op post is old tech trim and housing wise... slapping in a bb core wont help it 1 iota, so like i said the core is irrelevant.

Plenty of bush bearing turbo's offer awesome response.

That's right. I've got a garrett gt2876 on my rb20 and i don't see full boost until about 4500rpm and before that it's just a pig. Looks like it's time for a downsize in turbo or upsize in engine.

tdo6 20g on mine, full boost by 3200rpm doesnt compromise down low that much either best turbo choice i have seen on an rb20 and i have over 270kw atw so power is good also

..., all bush bearing turbos are incredibly laggy..

Bahah the stupidest thing ive read in a long time. Complete lies.

You obviously dont know what a Trust turbo can do.

The turbo you want is a HKS 2530. Best turbo evarrrrr for the RB20. Close to std response (use cam gears to aid response) and can make 220-230kw with fairly reasonable boost.

Either you have a TD06 on an RB25DE and you dont realise you dont have an RB20...or its a type and you meant 4200rpm...or something else is going on. I know of a few TD06 setups getting around now and there is no way on earth most people are making 16-20psi at 3,400rpm and still making 270rwkws.

Interesting for Femno and Russman to drive my car with a TD06-20G when i get back on October. The 2530 is a good thing, but i am still tempted to say the slightly laggier TD06-20G is worth living with for the wider power band and 30rwkws odd more power it can give you. I am making about 19psi at 4,400rpm or something. But really, it doesnt get its boogie on until about 4,600rpm, irrespective what the boost guage says

Bu agree with URAS, combination of wheel sizes and housings mean its probably a turbo better off an RB25, not a lower compression, shorter stroke smaller cc RB20

    • If doing that ^, I'd take the idle up valve out and plug the hole in the pump.
    • You can try capping the power steering idle up valve at both ends if it's old. The valve and the intake manifold. That is something that is known to fail in Toyotas with age and it will suck power steering fluid into the intake and burn it in the engine which can cause issues. Then bleed it again with engine off first. Do like 30+ lock to lock turns with the front wheels off the ground.
    • Hi Brent, I am wondering if you ever worked this out? I have upgraded this unit to a newer one and everything works bar the reverse camera, so i really want to know what plugs are what so I can patch the camera through. many thanks in advance Mike

    • Update:   smoke test all pipes no issues cleaned reservoir   fluid put in ( dexron 3 atf)   steering turn side to side and could hearing  gurgling from steering rack which I assumed was air lock, opened one of the steering rack connections and could see loads of air getting pushed out( not sure if you meant to do that / whether it will re introduce air into system)   anyways, loads of side to side sound was gone. Turned car on, pump was slightly ( barely) wining so turned side to side few more turns and fluid level when car on was almost none in resorvoir which I guess is normal if car is one. Turned car of and fluid was gushing out. Almost 200-300cc was pushed out. Repeated engine off side to side followed  by engine on and same result       going mad now. It seems system is either sucking air in whilst on or there is tons of air which I am not giving it enough time to bleed. Thoughts?   would it work like brake caliper if I open steering rack copper pipes and let gravity pull all air out?   or maybe have a restriction somewhere? What is the red circled item, could that be blocked? It i
