i know i might get flamed for this but.

if you put a rb26 in a gts4 does it tecnicaly make it a gtr

[not meaning all the other stuff]

i know it is a stupid question but i have been really wondering.

imnot going to do this any time but yeah its been bugging me.

There are plenty of GTS4s that exceed GTRs in performance etc. Some how I don't think it make it a GTR. more a GTS 4 custom.

according to Nissan, the GTS4 was designed as a GTS that needed to be used in snowy areas or to tow items etc. As it didn't have enough power in NA form to do that, it got the turbo from the GTSt. This is why the GTS4 in an R33 and GT-Four in an R34 is NA as it met the power requirement without a turbo.

interesting point.

lol at gts4 designed to tow..

with an RB20?

congrats on purchase Chris.

Gotta ask though.. why did you go for a gts4 over a GTST?

The GTS4 is heavier than the GTR due to the shit guards and bonnet etc, and has the power (lack of) of a gtst.

I guess if you are going the rb25 path it does make it better, but I still think a rwd would have been better.

were you after 4wd in particular?

I had a RWD car inthe USA. the thing liked to swap ends too much. after having a mates 33 for a few days it too liked to swap ends when booted off the line. I have always had 4wd cars since I came out here.to me they are bit more fun and a bit more stable. as for buying a GTS4 - it was on offer from one of the club members for a silly price so I bought it and I'm going to spend some moeny tidying it up.

if you remember the wagon I have this will be sort of the same idea. buy a wreck - build it and drive the thing. I got my parts list back today from nissan and 99% of it came back as available so thats a good sign for nissan. I did the same with my subaru and had about half come back (subaru is an 88 btw this is an 89.)

its still sitting up north at the moment as I have not had time to move it.

choice of engine was some what of a forced choice. I can't put a RB20 back in as the original pretty much toast (twice!) so it progesses to a RB25 and a bit of boost. first thing to do it fix the body and source a GTR front end for it. that will fix up the hacked mess of the front mount and make the thing look a bit better.

one thing I am going to do are a few oil coolers! digging through FAST I found that there was an option for a rear diff cooler. the trans cooler is also an idea but I have to find someone whose done it. oil coolers Ican do myself. if someone has a GTR triple gauge unit they wish to part with shoot me a PM. I have a rather neat idea in mind for them.

Well don't boot it off the line/mid corner? Just drive accordingly and no matter what layout you choose it should give you a smile.

LOL GTS4 to tow! I agree with the GTR vs GTS4 Comments. For me and Chris the project start savings over a GTR are still at least 15k dollars. The cheapest GTR will need alot of money thrown at it any way. In my case I wanted AWD in the finished car, I wanted to retain the automatic, and I prefer the single turbo look when finished. So my preference was to start a Stagea block GTS4 conversion of an already auto GTS4 than, try to finish with that from a higher cost point in a GTR. But now when I finish modding I will add Haymen reese tow bar to the list!

99.9% of GTS4's I came across when looking for mine were in the hills having spent their entire lives in the snow. Seriously, that's what they were marketed as in the brochures. GTS4's are notorious for underbody rust as a result.

Mine came from the burbs of tokyo (Koganei) and had a towbar on it

I'll leave the towbar off  last two car I have owned had it and both had tear marks where someone had tried to pull too much with the car.

white GTT,

you have got it in one. mine is manual and staying that way.

shan,

rust - thats a given on any car of this age. part of the reason I'm doing panels.

Yes I initially bid for one on e-bay, was lucky to be out bid. Had rear quarter panel rust, probably means more as you say. Bought one off e-bay later, still around half the Carsales price, relieved the body isn't too bad. Main problem is the "back yard tuner" factor. Atmo BOV badly fitted FMIC, stuffed drive shafts, signs of paddock bashing etc. I still prefer the "snow car" image to the "tow car" image. That's what Ford wagons with leaf springs are for.

ok finally have this thing at my shop. over teh next week and a bit I'm going to start pulling it to bits and fixing things. decided that I may be a 'lil bit' mad as I'm probably going to restore it.

Hats off to you for saving a GTS4. I often get questioned about my interest in fixing mine up. I think they are a worthwhile vehicle. Currently driving a turbo ford, I think awd is a good addition to a turbo car and improves it's "real world" (rain etc) usability.

More like batshit insane :D

There's a not-too-insignificant amount of work that needs to be done but I can't wait to see the finished product. I'm also keen to see what electrickery you jam in there

well considering EVERY thing is available for it, I figure in 3-4 years it will be a nice car to hand to my daughter when she learns to drive. I know full and well that I'll spend 10 times what I paid for it. (those that know me and know WHAT I paid for it - keep quiet.)

only change I'm making is the engine. due to age the RB20 is going in favour of a RB25. factory color remains the same (red.)

I'm going to put a build thread up similar to the other brisbane based fellow with his GTR when I get a second.

I have already started catalogging things into bags.

    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.

    • Howdy all,   I had my rb25det S2 rebuilt and finally started it today but have run into a few issues  Engine sounds like a a diesel easiest way to summarise like small ticking, gets louder when revs are slightly adjusted  The engine builder repainted the engine cover leaving no where for me to go off with lining up the CAS so have it as central as possible so not sure it that could be affecting it?, changed the gearbox fluid too but won’t seem to go into gear when running, and only 1 to 4 when off having a hard time finding 5th and reverse anyone got any ideas or a base for me to start off? much appreciated
