Should I Upgrade My Camera?

what about this one? id like to do bug photography, like close ups of bugs, spiders, beez etc, is this one right for the job?

what benafit is there for the 200mm? just means i can get shots of things from further away in the same quality? if im doing bug work would i be wise to get something with less zoom since ill already be near the bug to begin with? perhaps a 50mm macro?

I have a sigma 70-200 and can tell you it would be good for sports but not really good for real macro photos

yeah here: Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO for K mount:

min focus 1m

max magnification 1:3.5

def not a real macro lens... (but might be ok for your usage *shrugs*)

Min Focusing Distance: 18.9cm

Max Magnification: 1:1

yeah exactly - which is why pentax forum would be good

also why I was a little worried about that 70-200 sigma lens - esp being second hand

(and on being on ebay you can't test it out before buying to make sure its in good working order either)

yea ebay is always a risk, but always a chance to pick something cheap up, 50/50 :-/

The problem with pentax cameras is they lose their value quick and lenses are limited. if you decide to upgrade you should purely base it on where you want to take your photography. if you are happy with the images you take and dont find the need for lots of lenses for various shots then keep your camera.

if you want to further your photography and find yourself limited by your camera then upgrade to a canon or nikon which have a huge range of genuine and third party lenses letting you experiment different techniques.

IMHO You cant go wrong with a canon 550d, 18 megapixel, high iso, 3-4fps, full HD video for around $1000

LOL, sorry dude, not to take a stab at you, but if you have such a slim grasp on what lenses do what, then how can you say you've out-grown your camera?

Seriously, Zennon stated the most important factors when he said that:

* if you do want to get a completely new camera system and you only have one lens so far, then this is the time to do it because lenses are not cheap, and they don't work across different brands. If you wanted to use your current 18-55 Pentax lens on a Canon camera, it won't work.

* if it's just a matter of wanting sharper, better quality photos, then maybe just a few new lenses attached to the camera you already own will be more than fine. Honestly, even a good quality 3.2MP point-and-shoot camera is more than sufficient to print decent A3-sized pictures. So getting a few different lenses for the Pentax you own already as your skills, requirements and budget allow will bring a whole new level to your photos.

If you wanted to get something that shoots video too, then fair enough.
