This is possible with VMware's Thin App. Basically it allows to you create a portable version of any application you want to. Start off with a clean windows build, run Thin App and it pretty much records the install process and packages it up into a standalone exe (it has sub folders with other required files).

But of course this comes with a price - and possibly only available in a bundle with other VM software/licensing...

I work in IT, use it all the time.

VM ThinApp is good, but is really an enterprise solution that costs the world (we use it), AppV from MS is another, but again, enterprise solution.

well you'd do something like that if you didn't have installing privleges on a workstation and you wanted to run unsanctioned apps, god only knows how many people do that here aaah.
