I'm getting bored with my R34 and am thinking of changing to a 04/05 V8 Monaro. There arent any around here to test drive so I was wondering if there is anyone who has driven both can give me some advice about what I can expect in handling/performance differences.

monaro is quicker than a stock gtt, doesn't handle as well as a stock gtt though.

Throw on a few bolt ons, raise turbo pressure, tune and gtt is better in every way.

if you're bored of the gtt then give the monaro a go, keep in mind they are two very different cars and they are pretty hard to compare, depends on the individual person.

Also posting on a skyline forum you are already setting yourself up for a biassed response.

good luck

In a straight line the monaro would prob beat the stock 34, but come to a corner the 34's chassis will be able to carry the speed through. If your bored its obviously upgrading suspension/turbo time! A properly modded skyline is never boring! :D

Any N/A Monaro you say? :D

I recommend doing the change. If you're bored of your R34, modifying it will only sustain enjoyment for a little while longer. Monaro is a completely different car, I think you'll like it just on it being different. I'd do the same swing to an R34 if I was getting bored of a Monaro. LS engines are very easy to modify, you'll enjoy Commodore parts availability and pricing.

I beg to differ.

If you have a Monaro with some mild mods such as an intake and exhaust VS a modded R34 (exhaust, intake, boost, FMIC, computer system, tune), the Monaro and the Skyline would be very much on par in all areas. If you had both on a track, the Monaro would be faster down the 1/4 mile, and around a racetrack, the Monaro and Skyline would be very closely matched.

Remember, a very lightly modded Monaro (with a free-flowing exhaust and intake) would be making somewhere in the vicinity of 350rwhp, whereas a mildly modded R34 (as above) would be making 250-280rwhp. The monaro has a shitload more torque thanks to a larger capacity motor and of course the 2 extra cyliners.

Obviously if you drive both, you will notice the difference, as the Monaro isn't exactly a light car (weighing in somewhere around the 1600kg mark), and the R34 is around the ~1450kg mark.

At the end of the day it's personal choice. Go drive a Monaro and take your time to think about it. Buy what you prefer to drive, buy what you will enjoy to drive more...don't impulse buy or you will regret it.

If you want something different why not go down the AWD path?

My mate and I test drove an Evo 8 on the weekend, it was nuts. The owner was obviously a skilled driver, but the speed he took these corners and speed traps in the wet was scary. The raw acceleration was mental too. Sure top end it might run out of puff, but shooting around the streets it was neck breakingly quick.

+1 For Evo 8 MR

i looked at a few and they can now be had for around 31-32 Mark, although advertised for 35-36 Mark

There bloody nice to drive... it was a night mare to pick which to Buy/ import (in my case R34 GTR vs Evo 8 MR)

No clue on the Monaro, I will say a free flowing LS engine, is a very nice sounding engine...

regardless, Test Drive before you make up you mind.... Big mistake otherwise

Buy my dads

But in all honestly it comes down to whether you are keeping the cars stock or doing mild mods or going all out. Once modifications come into play its a whole new ball game. The Monaros really start to shine with a supercharger on them and I gaurantee if you drove my dads car you would want one straight away, it puts my car to shame.

No i didn't say any. To clarify, i mean most stock capacity, mildly modded LS1s

I beg to differ.

1600kg is being a bit kind to the Monaro, isn't it? Add to that the fact that a lot of them are auto, so from a rolling start, where the skyline will be on boost straight away, the monaro is going to want to have a fair bit more hp to keep up.

this isn't a pissing contest, however. i agree, best bet for the OP is to give one a go.

Board?!

Buy a R34 GTR.

Stock GTTs are slow.... I had a run with one on my mums saab 95 linear (130kw at fly, fwd) and lost by 1-1.5 car lengths around 130 from a 20 rolling start....

nice car^

wish I had a dad like that :)

tbh tho mine is into FX-FJ holdens, in particular fj panelvans. got a handful of them in various states.

he was going to buy a yellow new monaro back in 2000 but was held up with shotgun on the test drive (it would have been mine to buy after 3yrs)

never did buy a monaro, went to nissan patrols instead. being 2m tall I couldnt even fit in the front seats let alone behind the steering wheel!

so my brother got the opportunity to buy a patrol off him instead. me, Im still waiting for my monaro

My wife has an SS Ute 6 speed manual, trust me stick with the skyline. There clunky build quality is crap everything falls apart. Gearbox feels like a tractor. Engine in stock form isn't that torquie, Basically not that great to drive. Mod your skyline 400 ponies kicking out the back will get you back into it

No Shit, i remeber that on the news. Monaro's were only out for like a week and it got highjacked, near adelaide oval? Would have been pretty scary for your old man, good enough reason not to buy one i'm thinking!

I have a direct comparison, my old man has a VZ series monaro with a tune (225rwkw) and I have an R34 GTT with a cooler exhaust and boost (190rwkw). Mine will just beat him in a straight line, as soon as a corner comes the R34 kills it.

It depends what sort of person you are, are you into the look and feel of your car or the sheer performance of it? If you enjoy the look and feel of a car, then a change may be great and you can enjoy something different. If its the performance side, then the one that is more modded will win haha.

So start modding! I went for a ride in the hypergear R33 with 300rwkw (but only running 270rwkw on the night) and it was spaz. It gave you a real thrill. Plus once you hit the speed, the skyline can hold more of it through the corner. My vote is for the R34. The monaro is a great car but more straight line oriented and a great cruising car.

yup, carjacked on war memorial drive.

put him off the monaro thats for sure..... never mind the fact the thieves were meth-heads on a crime spree; random opportunity to carjack a new monaro so they took it

Buy my dads

Love the QLD mod plate, "yeah mate she looks good" and passed. No emission tests or engineering certificates etc.

    • A lot of what you said there are fair observations and part of why I made that list, to make some of these things (like no advantage between the GSeries and GSeries II at PR2.4 in a lot of cases) however I'm not fully convinced by other comments.  One thing to bare in mind is that compressor flow maps are talking about MASS flow, in terms of the compressor side you shouldn't end up running more or less airflow vs another compressor map for the same advertised flow if all external environmental conditions are equivalent if the compressor efficiency is lower as that advertised mass flow takes that into consideration.   Once the intercooler becomes involved the in-plenum air temperature shouldn't be that different, either... the main thing that is likely to affect the end power is the final exhaust manifold pressure - which *WILL* go up when you run out of compressor efficiency when you run off the map earlier on the original G-Series versus G-Series II as you need to keep the gate shut to achieve similar airflow.    Also, how do you figure response based off surge line?  I've seen people claim that as an absolute fact before but am pretty sure I've seen compressors with worse surge lines actually "stand up" faster (and ironically be more likely to surge), I'm not super convinced - it's really a thing we won't easily be able to determine until people start using them.     There are some things on the maps that actually make me wonder if there is a chance that they may respond no worse... if not BETTER?!  which brings me to your next point... Why G2 have lower max rpm?  Really good question and I've been wondering about this too.  The maximum speed *AND* the compressor maps both look like what I'd normally expect if Garrett had extended the exducers out, but they claim the same inducer and exducer size for the whole range.   If you compare the speed lines between any G and G2 version the G2 speed lines support higher flow for the same compressor speed, kinda giving a pretty clear "better at pumping more air for the same speed" impression. Presumably the exducer includes any extended tip design instead of just the backplate, but nonetheless I'd love to see good pics/measurements of the G2 compressors as everything kinda points to something different about the exducer - specifically that it must be further out from the centerline, which means a lower rpm for the same max tip speed and often also results in higher pressure ratio efficiency, narrower maps, and often actually can result in better spool vs a smaller exducer for the same inducer size... no doubt partly due to the above phenomenon of needing less turbine speed to achieve the same airflow when using a smaller trim. Not sure if this is just camera angle or what, but this kinda looks interesting on the G35 990 compressor tips: Very interested to see what happens when people start testing these, and if we start getting more details about what's different.
    • I know right. It baffled me. There's no way when the engine is off, key is in ignition, (coils are dissconnected aswell), also my sound system was dissconnected (I don't run any audio capacitors), battery reads 12.2v and with the 10amp fuse blown I was measuring 24 to 30v. The reading would move a bit from 30v to 24v which was weird. I took a pic of the multi meter reading 🤣: (This is a brand new single channel digital oscilloscope that also has a multi meter mode).   Before when the fuse was blown, I had one lead on the 12v supply (green/white wires) of that brown relay and the other lead on the negative battery terminal. When I turned the key on ignition (engine off), it would read 30v. Then when I removed that relay from it's plug and tried putting ignition on again, it would read 12v, but I think it's because it can't turn on the ecu now that I removed it. I asked Chatgpt and this is what it had to say:   Not sure if those theories would be possible but, any auto sparkies here? welcome to confirm. 🤷‍♂️  No idea, but if it happens again, atleast I know what type of issue it is, unlike last few months where I didn't know what was causing all my issues and I was just taking stabs in the dark to figure out what type of problem it was. If it does happen again I'm going to investigate futher and trace back the source even more and inspect more circuits. I drove it to work this morning and the car drove and boosted fine. Yeah I was thinking the same, so I've imported my back up saved map (which is the map that I saved when it got done tuning) back onto my haltech with the base fuel pressure set to 43.5psi.
    • Yeh nice, if your in melbourne could you recommend any exhaust shops in the east that do a good job?
    • Sorry yes, this is what im after Also, that jpjdm site appears to be offline
