hey guys,

i have a love for all things mechanical and im interested in learning as much as i can about engine building, turbo selection and suspension / handling (i was an apprentice mechanic for nearly 2yrs before leaving to persue a career in youthwork).

Iam having difficulty finding good up to date reading

could you recommend books that i could nerd up on that are easy to understand and where they could be purchased from

If you're in Sydney, you can go over to Express Publications 2 Stanley St Silverwater.

Ask for back issues of High Performance Imports > Performance Imports Magazines > sit yourself down in the front lounge area > pick what you want from the articles in each mag > pay $5 per mag.

What I try NOT to look at, is the receptionist's cleavage each time she leans over & hands me another bunch of mags. :banana:

I have so many engineering and automotive texts, here are a few of my favs:

Carroll Smith is a legendary race engineer who helped Alan Moffat back in the day. All his titles are great!

Picked this one up at a car show recently, its newly published... nice summary of skylines.

all of my knowledge is based from online reading (and being wrong in some discussions) and doing it myself (and getting it wrong), after a while you get things right and your confidence builds from there and things start to make sense on their own, almost like a mechanical logic.

3 engine rebuilds later, countless turbo swaps, tuning, wiring, replacing parts etc etc.. it all comes together in the end. you pay for your mistakes, but those mistakes pay for your experience and IMO experience is the best way to learn.

thats pretty much it.

even listened to a conversation between a mechanic and someone knowledgeable about mechanics? you can always tell which is which.

    • I found the same with Subaru’s.  I own and love the SG9 Forester, after that model 2008+, Subaru threw the ugly stick at all their line up and somehow managed to make them look worse with every succeeding year.  lol
    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility   
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
