Ticking After Oil Change

Hey ive just done my oil change, 8100 5-40 xcess put in. Oil levels ok. Use to run genuine nissan 7.5-30. Just turned it on and heard some ticking coming from engine. Doesnt go up with revs just a constant tick. Any ideas what this could be?

took it for a drive with new oil and tickings gone. Overcautious of my car :P

Most likely the tappets drained of oil when you did the change, they will tick after this until oil flows back into them. Particularly as you were using a very thin oil beforehand. They might be slightly worn too but nothing to worry about.

i have penrite 5w50 fully synthetic in the gtr, excellent oil pressure and oil temp very very rarely goes over 85, top end of engine is pretty quiet too for solid lifters

i remember it being noticably louder ticking/tapping on idle when i was running 10w40, i also had lower oil pressure when i used to run 10w40, wont got back now :P sticking with 5w50

The ticking stopped completely straight after I took it for a drive. Guessing the engine would of been a bit dry after the oil was drained out and the first 30 seconds of startup. I was just overcautious and turned the car off before taking it for a drive. Then took it out for a warm up and once the oil went through it stopped. No more ticking :P

+1. If it goes away after a few seconds then it's just the normal oil transport process.

the motul does seem more noisy to me as well. try another oil i love the motul but prefer a quiet motor :P go 10W-30 or 10W-40 it will hold pressure better than a 5W oil.

Why is that? 10w only refers to the warm up viscosity, so 10w40 and 5w40 will have the same viscosity when warm, but w30 and w40 won't. The w30 should have less pressure as it moved through the filter easier, or is that an over-generalisation.

Just brining this back up again. After 3 oil changes with the motul 8100 the ticking is sometimes still there on startup and even idle. I was thinking maybe a 10-40 oil would be better for my car. Or would I be better trying a 15-40? Car starts up fine and idles fine all the time, I just wanted to stop this ticking and was looking at trying another oil.

Kinda weird how the Nissan 7.5-30w oil never brought up the ticking but the 8100 does. Thinking of trying the Turbolite 10-40, I seen that M5000 is a good cheaper option also but its off the markets.If your reading, Did you have any left Birds? Or was there another quality oil anyone can recommend?

Yeah I saw that a few pages back on the oils thread. I was just thinking maybe something semi synth would stop the ticking. Maybe the 8100 has cleaned my engine alot more than the nissan oil did making the lifters tick? I'm not too sure. Just wanted some suggestions for a reasonable semi synth. If none then the 10-40 motul will be tested next oil change.

Honest opinion go get ya self 5L of HPR10 its basicly 10w/50 awsome stuff i used to run it before i started using royal purple. For about 50 bucks a bottle i reckon its the best but if ya lucky enough to splurge $100 on royal purple id sugest you get it best oil out i reckon temp is down. Pressure is always smooth and idles awsome
