hello,

I'm new here and i am looking for either a evo 5 or a r32 gtr as a track car.

I dont know much about the cars itself, but i do know that the gtr is inline 6 running twin turbos and the evos running a inline 4 turbo.

would appreciate some opinions on these two cars

Two totally different cars designed for 2 different type of motor sports.

GTR = Circuit

EVO = Rally

Both have different characteristics.

Best to test drive both and see what you think.

I have only driven an EVO 6.5 TME and was a fun car.

GTR has more pulling power at the top end due it being a 2.6lt inline 6 twin turbo vs 2lt inline 4 turbo.

All depends on what you like, as both cars are good in their own respects and modifications can be endless for both, depending on how big your wallet is... :P

Depends on the usual 100 variables.

What track, what level of mods, whats the budget blah blah blah.

Your question is about as vague as an arts student. :P

More information = better responses.

That said, buy a EVO 6 and forget about the GTR.

most likely use it on the circuttt. But i love both cars, they are both amazing cars.

Welll my budget is 18,000 and below.

I've seen a few gtrs and evos going for that price and under.

Probs spend another 5,000 on mods. but its also gonna be both track/daily drive and comfortable ride

soo its more of a weekend type of car just to have fun with.

I like the gtr but its 5 years younger then the evo soo im still not sure

I'm sort of new with this stuff soo im not really sure about mods

Spend $23k then and get a decent example rather than a clapped out one for 18k.

You'll probably get a few mods that way as well.

Well its hard to decide cause they are both great cars.

But its such a hard decision but if i spend 23k i could get a evo 7/ or 8 for that then.

The GTR is older but is powerful and still catches my eyes but theres something about the evo that makes me like them alot

im still unsure about which one to get

Powerful but heavy, older and has inherrant risks.

To track a GTR you basically want to change turbos - you wont see much change outta 7k to do that and get all the supporting mods.

EVO's outta the box are a good little car, a nicely modded EVO6 would be a good base. Depends on the circuits etc however.

He said that he want's it to be his daily drive.. so i presume he wants to be able to have it registered. Unless he's an epic badass and enjoy's doing non-rego'd driving :D

I'd suggest the evo perhaps, i recently bought a 17k gtr and so far have spent 3k just trying to get it to go around courners properly.. damn HICAS + old suspension bits..

how much money do you have to spend on it? that will be the deciding factor.

the possibilities are almost endless with the GTR. the EVO is a great car but you are limited by the displacement of their motors. i dont think much else could fit into it.

the GTR on the other hand has had a lot of R&D..... rb30, turbo setups, handling, .. the list goes on and on. and you've always got the option to go RWD when you feel like it.

im currently tossing up between the evo 9/10 and the r34 GTR. it took me around 10 seconds to decide on the GTR for the reasons above.

With a budget of $18k buy an S13 Silvia or R32 GTST... then you'll have money left to fix it up, mod it to your driving style or money to fix shit thats gonna break out on the race track.

This. An S13 with 10-15k of development in it will be faster and more fun than a stockish Evo 5 or R32 GTR.

mmm like previous comments, buying those older cars for even an occasional track purpose is like having a time bomb.

first up even if the engines are still okay, and holds up, you will need new set of rotors/pads almost straightway after hitting the track. then tyres, fluids, cooling systems etc etc. gets a bit more expensive then you may think

Honestly all that stuff comes under consumables, and you budget for that regardless of if you buy an old car or a new one. Motorsport is never cheap.

There are just as many if not more bullshit fast Evos getting around on race tracks. The 2 litre capacity should'nt be a problem really. Plenty of the evos are making 400-500hp and you can get em down to around 1000kg.

    • If doing that ^, I'd take the idle up valve out and plug the hole in the pump.
    • You can try capping the power steering idle up valve at both ends if it's old. The valve and the intake manifold. That is something that is known to fail in Toyotas with age and it will suck power steering fluid into the intake and burn it in the engine which can cause issues. Then bleed it again with engine off first. Do like 30+ lock to lock turns with the front wheels off the ground.
    • Hi Brent, I am wondering if you ever worked this out? I have upgraded this unit to a newer one and everything works bar the reverse camera, so i really want to know what plugs are what so I can patch the camera through. many thanks in advance Mike

    • Update:   smoke test all pipes no issues cleaned reservoir   fluid put in ( dexron 3 atf)   steering turn side to side and could hearing  gurgling from steering rack which I assumed was air lock, opened one of the steering rack connections and could see loads of air getting pushed out( not sure if you meant to do that / whether it will re introduce air into system)   anyways, loads of side to side sound was gone. Turned car on, pump was slightly ( barely) wining so turned side to side few more turns and fluid level when car on was almost none in resorvoir which I guess is normal if car is one. Turned car of and fluid was gushing out. Almost 200-300cc was pushed out. Repeated engine off side to side followed  by engine on and same result       going mad now. It seems system is either sucking air in whilst on or there is tons of air which I am not giving it enough time to bleed. Thoughts?   would it work like brake caliper if I open steering rack copper pipes and let gravity pull all air out?   or maybe have a restriction somewhere? What is the red circled item, could that be blocked? It i
